We are a small, friendly hostel in Mexico city, run by a team of local Mexicans. The hostel is the oldest in the city and has a reputation among travellers for being like the name suggests - just like home! It is a truly international hostel, with travellers and volunteers from every corner of the globe. We are not a party hostel but instead offer a homely space for guests to get to know this huge city, and experience Mexican culture, as well as providing a sociable atmosphere for cultural exchanges with people all over the world. For example, shared dinners are common, with guests making their specialities from their home countries. This is alongside the Mexican staff who are passionate about sharing Mexican culture, from Mezcal tastings to the local queer scene.
We have had Workawayers at the hostel for many years and it is always an enriching experience for staff and guests. Workawayers bring with them new ideas and fresh ways of doing things. This might be painting a mural or teaching each other songs on the guitar in the living room. Our local staff appreciate the opportunity to interact with such an international group. We have five permanent local staff who are involved in overall management and day-to-day running of the hostel, cleaning, and doing night shifts. We also have a number of local staff who work with us on an ad-hoc basis, to help with repairs and deliveries We are passionate about supporting other local businesses and have good relationships with other local hostels, bars and restaurants. We also support smaller businesses by giving them the opportunity to host evenings at the hostel.
We have found that Workawayers bring something special to the hostel, through their travelling experience and knowledge of languages. We always have a very varied team in terms of ages and nationalities, with everyone offering something unique. Volunteers work alongside local staff to bring this international perspective and travelling experience. We ask that volunteers are at least able to communicate in Spanish, as some of our staff do not speak any English, and we think it is essential that everyone is able to speak to each other.

Our local team are all born and bred in Mexico City, so are hugely knowledgable about just about every aspect of it. Whether it's mezcal, Mexican folk tales or the best vegan tacos in town, our local staff will help everyone experience true Mexican culture beyond the usual beaten track. Volunteers will be able to exchange their knowledge and experiences with staff, guests and other volunteers. This might be cooking tips, new dance moves or a suggestion for the hostel.
If Workawayers want to practice their English or Spanish, they will definitely do so in our bilingual hostel. The team usually operates in both languages, and many guests are keen to practice either their Spanish or English. Many other languages are usually being spoken, so if there is another language you are looking to learn or practice, you will probably find it here!
Workawayers who are interested will be able to learn a lot about helping at a hostel in Mexico. The hostel is the oldest in the whole city so the team have a lot of experience to share! However we are always open to fresh, international perspectives and exchange of ideas - that's why volunteers are so important in what they bring and share :)
We are looking for friendly, proactive people who are happy to work as part of an international team. While Workawayers will be involved in day-to-day hostel tasks (such as managing bookings, doing check ins, laundry etc), maintaining a good feeling in the hostel is really important to us to and making sure that guests and staff feel welcome and integrated! The atmosphere of the hostel is important and we love to host Workawayers who also want to experience the city and socialise with other helpers and guests.
We manage the 4 days working in different shifts : morning, afternoon or night (with an extra payment). The days working change every week.
We know that travellers' plans can change a lot, so we usually only accept applications for dates 1-2 months in advance.

We always have guests and volunteers who are looking to swap language practice, particularly english and spanish!
We offer a single bed in a female or mixed dormitory, as well as breakfast every morning, free laundry and wifi.
There is SO MUCH to see and do in Mexico City that volunteers will never get bored. We are in a wonderful area that also makes the rest of the city very accessible. As volunteers have 3 days off a week it is also easy to explore the surrounding area on day trips to local sites or 'pueblos magicos', as well as having time to make longer overnight trips to places like Morelia or Guanajato. Whatever you're into, you'll find it in Mexico City!
