Our projects take place in Oyugis and Rusinga Island, Kenya.
PRIMARY SCHOOL
Our primary school is an educational institution based near Oyugis which focuses on offering affordable, quality education to children in need. It is a rural school with around 60 students from 3 to 12 years old from humble background who need to be assisted with quality education and care. Also at Oyugis, next to the playground of the school, we have an organic farm where we practice permaculture and experimenting in ecological living. You can also find a poultry project wich has been started quite recently.
Some of the kids in the school can not afford even one meal per day. This is why the goal of both permaculture and chicken/poultry projects is to feed the students in the school as well as to sell the products to make the school self-sustainable. At Oyugis, volunteers can work in any of those areas to any extent that they wish: teaching the kids in any area, playing, music, as well as farming in the "shamba" (local name for garden). The primary school is need of some renovations, basically with the kitchen and latrines, and someone with building skills or knowledge would be appreciated although funds are also needed for such building projects. Also, and very important, scholar materials will be much welcome as we see them as a basic need for the kids to recieve quality education.

SECONDARY SCHOOL FOR GIRLS
Our secondary school is in Rusinga Island where we provide classes in English, Mathematics, Chemistry, Social Sciences, Religious Education, Biological Sciences, Physical Education, History and Government, Vocational Skills and more to the students. In the school we also have an organic farm to provide food for the students and become a own sustainable project.
COMMUNITY BEHAVIOR CHANGE
This is a group of people who are depending on a local drink called CHANG'AA. The aim of this project is to look for alternative business for the people with this problem. The brewing problem affects many families and it is a big deal in both communities, both in Rusinga and Oyugis. This is why we encourage volunteers to join this project to find better solutions for their lives as well as alternatives that allow them see that having a healthy life free of chang'aa and other dangerous drugs is still possible with effort and heart.
We welcome our volunteers to be involved in any of these projects. For those willing to volunteer at the primary school and Community behavior change, they will be accommodated at the Director's home with a lovely family that cooks and takes care of them. This will provide an enriching culture and language African immersion which will make the volunteer feel at home.

This is a great opportunity to learn Kiswahili and Luo languages and to learn more about African culture. Both settings are rural, having beautiful, peaceful landscapes with rolling hills. Nearby we have a volcanic lake and hot springs. Lake Victoria, Masai Mara and Ruma National Park are nearby.
We are flexible based on volunteers interest. Volunteers can help the local teachers with teaching subjects at school and help with the school computers or work in the organic garden. Also the gardening skills are welcome for the organic farm in the two schools.
All volunteers willing to help and to live an enriching and wonderful African cultural experience are welcome to what it will turn into a new home and family for them!

At Oyugis, we have a guesthouse for volunteers on the same property as William's home which is walking distance to all of the Oyugis projects. There is electricity in the guest house.
At Rusinga Island, volunteers will be given a house like the one for the teachers. The food will be provided and cooked by William. There is also electricity in the house.
These areas are malaria areas so it is recommended to bring a mosquito net. Malaria medicine can be purchased here but it must be taken one week prior to arrival.
