  Hi! My name is Namwaka. I live in Silundu, a small village 12 km south of Mongu, Western Province, my three children: Elijah(15) Elizabeth ( 16) and Lydia.(12).
  
  Our place is situated on a hill, surrounded by some very old Rosewood trees. Down hill there is a small stream. The area is very quiet, and in the mornings you will hear the birds singing. whilst during the nights you will be able to silently gaze at the stars.
  
  I am an environmentalist. There are two things I love: growing organic food, and enjoying the beauty of trees and the beautiful priceless air they provide us! Sadly, Zambia is currently suffering from a very high rate of deforestation, which is devastating human food supplies, ravaging natural habitats of animals, as well as causing further climate change. Wild fires are also a big challenge regrettably.
  
  We firmly believe that the key in cubbing deforestation, is held by the local communities. It’s for this reason that one of the aims of our project is to make members of our community aware of the seriousness of the deforestation that our country is undergoing, as well as the impact that climate change has.
  
  Next to bringing awareness, our project is working on a method of producing charcoal briquettes made from organic waste material, as an alternative for conventional charcoal that is currently being used which is one of the main drives to deforestation . If successful, this could be an important step in reducing deforestation.

  In the western Province, we the lozi tribe have a traditional ceremony every year called Kuomboka ceremony which attracts different people from all walks of life to attend it. It is normally held every year in April or may. For more information, you can look up " Kuomboka Ceremony" . This ceremony is the pride of the Lozi speaking people. Foreign volunteers are welcome to my village anytime.

  Since we are a new organization, we would love to have people that can help teach us how to run the foundation, grant writing and share more new ideas about organic farming/ gardening and even partnering with our Foundation, sustainability and ecoprojects and building, animal husbandry. Cooking, general house chores! All ideas are welcome!

  Unterkunft

  Foreign volunteers are welcome to my village anytime. We have thatched reed houses with an out door toilet.We do not have access to electricity but we use solar lighting. Life is fun out here! It's cool and quiet! Mongu town is about 13 km from our village, we have easy access to public transport to buy our groceries. We hope to hear from you all. I would be greatful if volunteers contributed a small amount towards the food as this would guarantee a pleasant meal for them while they are here. This will carter for breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks.
  
  I request a contribution so that i can provide the appropriate meal for the volunteers who sometimes need 4 meals a day due to the nature of work they do here and some volunteers prefer different types of food that we dont have at times. The amount is USD 5.00( United States Dollar). This has been permitted by Workaway.

  Description of the farm:
  The farm was set up as a community foundation to tackle some of the most pressing issues in the Western Province of Zambia. The idea for the organisation was born from the observation that the world is facing a number of pressing and interconnected challenges around deforestation, which require holistic but localised solutions.
  
  Our main challenges are deforestation, soil degradation, loss of biodiversity, food security and green economy.
  
  On our farm we promote reforestation by planting trees like; Acacia, rosewood ( one of the endangered species) Mungongo, wild fruit trees and tropical fruit trees ; guava, Mango,papaya,lemons, oranges, lime, moringa and avocadoes. We make biochar and work towards community engagement in all these activities. We live mostly self sustainable lives! we practice permaculture, generative agriculture and organic agro forestry. The farm is off grid, we rely on our solar power to pump water from a borehole We cook on firewood and use local outside showers and toilets. We live in harmony with the plants, trees and animals around us and most of the food we eat comes from the farm.
  
  Directions to the farm:
  There are three options to get to the farm.
  1. Lusaka airport
  2. Livingstone airport
  3. Windhoek airport
  
  Directions,
  Option 1: Lusaka airport. There are daily busses from different bus companies driving from Lusaka to Mongu from 4.00 am to 10.00 am. The reliable buscompanies are Red Bombar, Powertools, Rion and Juldan,
  To travel from the airport in Lusaka to go to the bus station you can get a taxi through the Yango App.
  We are located in Sefula village, just 13 kilometers from Mongu.
  From Mongu there is available public transport. You will need to get off at Sefula junction, I will wait for you at there or pick you up from Mongu.
  
  Option 2: Livingstone airport.
  There is a daily bus from Livingstone to Mongu. It’s the Oasis bus company.You can get a ticket at the intercity busterminus Livingstone. The bus goes to Mongu but you get off before it gets to Mongu at Sefula junction. We can pick you up from the junction.
  
  Option 3: Windhoek airport.
  You can take the intercape mainliner bus from Windhoek to Katima. In Katima you can get on a bus to Mongu and get off the bus at Sefula junction. You can buy tickets from intercape bus online through their website or on Busbud.com. You can also buy it at the bus station.
  The bus ride from Katima to Sefula junction takes 6 hours. We will be waiting for you at the Sefula junction.
  
  In Lusaka and Livingstone are backpackers hostels, lodges and hotels available so you can rest before you continue to travel.
  Recommendations in Livingstone are Fawlty towers or Jolly Boys Backpackers.
  
  There is also an airplane from Windhoek to Katima Namibia. From here you can take a taxi. This is the fastest but maybe a bit expensive. And most volunteers are enjoying the long bus rides where they can interact with local people and see some of the country.
  
  What else:
  1. You can buy a Zambian SIM card at the airport in Zambia and get some talktime and an internet bundle. Even at the bus station you will find network agents who sell Simcards.
  2. If you have a powerbank, please bring it with you. If the powerbank needs to recharge we can bring it to a shop we rent at the roadside (20min. walk) to recharge. Due to frequent power cuts caused by lack of enough water supply at the power generating station, however this situation is temporal ( it will be normal once the rains start). At our farm we don’t have electricity. We have a solar panel we use to pump water.
  3. The place is safe, there is no theft and no wild animals. If you would like to camp you can bring your camping stuff, it is possible here.
  4. There is a little stream where people can swim if they want.
  5. The meals we eat are mostly vegetarian. We also offer omnivore meals or vegan meals. We offer warm meals. We cook local recipes with available herbs, spices and vegetables from the garden. We sometimes also cook international dishes like pizza in our DIY oven. We also bake cakes and bread. We offer breakfast, lunch, dinner and in between snacks.
  6. We work in the mornings and late afternoon. During the daytime it gets too hot to do physical work. This time we use for cooking, research, rest or to tell stories. For volunteers it’s a good time to ask questions about anything you want to know.
  7. We have clean water that is safe to drink. It doesn’t need to be filtered. It comes from a well 36 meters under ground.
  8. There is no worry for health or hygiene concerns. We take hygiene seriously and wash our hands multiple times before handling food.
  9. On Sunday you are also welcome to join church if you like. During time off, we can visit the Sioma falls and the Victoria falls . We have a Royal palace where our King lives called " limulunga village" it's also an interesting place to visit.during the rain season, we go mushroom foraging! At night we watch the stars and mostly we have a very beautiful view of a full moon! We also tell stories around a camp fire at night! There is so much to do! There is never a dull moment. For Christian believers, we encourage one another through bible studies and singing of praise hymns.
