Beschreibung
Hello! Please, just call me 'Lee'. My family and I live in a small town known as Cheongyang, which is 2 hours south of Seoul. Many people within this town own farms; my family runs an organic chestnut farm. The planting of new trees and pruning time takes place from February to March. In the months following, we tend to the farm which includes watering the plants, cutting tall grass, and pulling bad weeds. We then harvest the chestnuts from the middle of September to the middle or end of October. During the winter, we mostly collect firewood and wait for the warmer weather.

My three weeks with Lee (Hyeong) was not only my first Workaway stay, but a wonderful experience which I'll never forget.

Lee and his family warmly welcomed me into their home even amidst the freezing temperatures of Korea's December. I worked alongside Lee and his father on the farm, and the work consisted of pruning trees, collecting firewood,… read more spreading fertilizer and doing some odd jobs around the house in order to prepare for the spring. The work was especially enjoyable because Lee and I would talk and laugh together all throughout it. Additionally, there isn't really much of a schedule while living a farm life, so we would take days off here and there and rest as we saw fit.

I thoroughly enjoyed each day with Lee and his family. I shared 3 meals a day with them - usually I'd eat breakfast, lunch and dinner with his parents, and Lee, his wife, his 5yo son, or their family friends would also come join us quite frequently. The food was absolutely delicious; Lee's mom is a wonderful cook. The family also took measures to make sure I was comfortable at all times. there weren't any shoes that fit me originally - I wear a US size 15 - so they ordered some new ones and had me rest for a few days until they arrived!

Lee also took me out for quite a few great excursions - we went out to watch a movie, play basketball, go for a hike, go to the markets, get coffee.. the list goes on and on! He always went out of his way to make sure I felt comfortable and was enjoying my stay with them:)

It's also important to mention that I'm currently learning Korean, and living here with Lee was the perfect opportunity to develop my ability, particularly in conversation. Lee and his wife know English well, so they are able to clear up any confusion that arose in conversation, but they were always eager to speak Korean with me, explain to me nuances of the culture and language, and put up with my slow and incoherent speaking at times. I considered myself a beginning-intermediate before arriving, but over just three weeks my ability to speak and understand has considerably approved, maybe even close to the intermediate level.

I highly recommend staying with Lee and his family if you are looking to stay in Korea and experience a true Korean lifestyle. If you are learning Korean, I have no doubt that you will be notice a huge improvement in your ability after your stay with them!
