Beschreibung
Our family has been farming in the Eastern Townships since 1973, producing high quality maple syrup. We use modern organic agricultural methods but keep tradition alive by collecting maple sap with our work horses. We live off of the land by growing most of our own food. Our cows and goats graze in green pastures, producing delicious milk, which we transform into cheeses, yogurt, butter, and sometimes, ice cream. We have room for you in our house.

I left thoroughly impressed and inspired by their self-sufficient lifestyle, care and wisdom in what goes into their bodies, and the physical strength it takes to own and operate a maple farm :) Troad (Julia) and daughter Ruthy were the members of the family I spent most of… read more my time with, lots of good conversation, laughs, singing, and learning through these 2 wise and strong women. Did I say they are both excellent cooks? I also met and spent time with sons Elija & Abraham-thanks for the wild Ski-Doo rides!

I arrived in mid-January, right in time to start working in the woods preparing maple tubing for the season. During the following month and a half, I stayed busy tending to the cows, goats, and chickens daily (milking, feeding, watering, cleaning), and working in the woods (fixing tubing, and later tapping tapping tapping- you will feel very comfortable handling a drill after this!). I was lucky enough to work through most of the maple season jobs and got to experience canning, tapping, and syrup making. There were also many more opportunities to learn new skills such as cheese/yogurt making, bread making, sauerkraut making (lots of food-related making!), peppered with cross-country skiing and snowshoeing in the woods with friendly border collie Quinoa by my side :) Troad and Ruthy are great at including you in their activities- there is always something interesting to do.

Working on a maple farm is hard, physical work. You will come home tired, you will be cold and uncomfortable at times. You will build muscle navigating the woods in your snowshoes. But it is a wonderful & authentic experience. For me, the mix of working in the woods and getting to take care of animals/cheese making was perfect. Long days- it was my choice to maybe work more- but I really felt like I was living as they are, and experiencing what it takes to live self-sufficiently.

I stayed in a room in their house with a comfortable futon bed, but there is also a little separate house (no running water/internet there) where volunteers can stay. It may be helpful for future volunteers to note that Troad likes quiet/lights out in the common living space by 9PM. You may be tired by then anyway, but good to know in case.

All in all, I highly recommend volunteering here. You will be joining the many volunteers who have spent time on the maple farm, and can read all about them in the WWOOFer books the family has kept over the years with sweet parting messages.

Thanks again Troad, Ruthy, Elija, and Abe for sharing your lovely lifestyle and wisdom- memories I will always cherish. And perhaps to another time!
