This Society works to protect the natural environment of the Tongass National Forest and build sustainable communities within Southeast Alaska. In 2018, we were gifted a remote homestead property in the Lisianski Inlet of Chichagof Island near Pelican, Alaska.

The property is surrounded by the magnificent West Chichagof-Yakobi Wilderness, which our organization's original members spent years working to get established by bringing policymakers and others to the area in order for them to form their own meaningful connections to place; ones you can only get from first hand experience.

We have been developing the property over the last four years and hosting creative retreats connecting diverse artists, writers, and activists involved in environmental work to the Tongass National Forest – people who will take the inspiration afforded to them through their experience, share it widely through myriad mediums, and advocate for the Tongass.

Additionally, we have used it as a field station for stewardship activities on the surrounding West Chichagof-Yakobi Wilderness, including collecting user data and maintaining trails in partnership with the US Forest Service.

We are looking for help doing maintenance and upgrade projects on the property to make it usable long term for our creative retreat and wilderness stewardship programs. It is in need of more substantial upgrades, repairs, and maintenance to support our goals and long-term use.

Travelers could experience remote wilderness Southeast Alaska but also be able to visit and interact with the fishing community of Pelican, Alaska. They would learn about the history and current aspects of Southeast Alaska and this area, including the cultures, traditional values, and original stewards of the place, the Lingít peoples; the significance of the Tongass National Forest and adjacent West Chichagof-Yakobi Wilderness Area; and the livelihoods like commercial salmon fishing that sustains the community of Pelican. They would also learn the story of the people that gifted us their homestead and how they lived a unique off grid lifestyle deeply connected to the lands and waters in this place.

We are looking for help in the listed area at this remote property only accessible by boat and small plane. Projects/skill sets include carpentry, fence posts, chainsaw work, wood cutting, and possibly outhouse building/moving, some general cleaning and organizing, and gardening. We are off grid but have solar power and battery powered tools.

The homestead is rustic but comfortable. You will sleep in a bed or bunk or cot with wood heat if needed. There is an outhouse and sauna. Water is a rain catchment system that connects to a sink faucet in the main house, for running water. Main house is where most cooking and dining happens. Drinking water must be filtered through our gravity filtration system. Two burner propane cook stoves and wood fired cast iron oven for cooking. Solar electricity for lighting and charging electronics with generators as backup. Wifi is available though sometimes temperamental. No cell service but other means of communications including VHF radios and Garmin satellite devices. Food stored in coolers with ice refills available in Pelican. Food must be brought in, no stores available with fresh foods. Options to restock with an order on small plane or ferry that comes to Pelican. Fishing possible and good at certain times of the year. You will be up there with a host and share cooking/every day cleaning duties. 18ft Skiff available for use to get to town depending on experience or your host will take you/do necessary town errands.

The area is vast for hiking, and exploring by boat and there are opportunities to see it during any time off as well as visit small community of Pelican. Local boats could be hired for charters to farther more remote places our skiff cannot safely go. Expect to mostly be on the property however with limited time and weather windows for doing other activities and dependent on skiff availability/use.
Safety is our highest priority and it is recommended workers have experience in remote locations and good common sense and awareness. This is bear country and a place where weather can change fast and it is a temperate climate: often rainy, windy, and chilly even in summer. Getting to medical services requires boat, plane, or helicopter and is not immediately available.
We work hard on our projects and have a lot of daylight but take necessary breaks for meals and rest.
There is a level of respect and responsibility expected for living in this place that was given to us, and for the surrounding lands and waters. You will be required to keep areas clean, stay positive, help out your host when needed, be flexible to do different jobs, projects, and activities, and potentially get stuck/weathered in/delayed with travel in and out of the area. You will be required to leave if you engage in unsafe or unwelcome activities/behaviors.
