Our family farm is located in Karla village of Sundargarh district in Odisha. Our family farm practices traditional organic farming methods which include using organic fertilizer for crops, tilling the land by plough using bulls, using traditional pesticides for any crop disease, sowing seeds, replantation of paddy samplings, weeding, rain irrigation, harvesting of crop by sickle, thrashing of crop by cow-stamping, cleaning of grains by traditionally and storing of grains. Our family is small land holding who practices it farming in 1.5 acres of land.
Our family farm only does farming sessional wise, especially rainy and winter. In rainy session which commence from 15th, June to October of the year, we organically and by indigenous methods we grow paddy along with it some daals and vegetables. Paddy and daals we grow for consumption only and vegetable for consumption as well as for marketing. And in winter session which is from November to February or till March we mostly grow vegetable and some daals for marketing purpose.
Here I would like mentions the cultivation processes which are mostly followed for all crop cultivation:
1. Preparation of land
2. Fertilizering the land
7. Cleaning of grain
The most interesting, joyful, happy farming is the indigenous tribal method of paddy farming in the rainy session. During this particular farming our community culture, unity, sharing, tradition, beliefs, life, knowledge becomes very much alive and lively in the village. Paddy cultivation is like one the festival and way of life for people of my community which they celebrate, share and live.
We have been practicing since the begging which like since 60 years, they had been cultivating indigenous crops in indigenous methods but in between due to climate change and lack of rain people of my community switch to short-term crops which yields fast. So now it is mixed method my community have adopted. But in our family farm after knowing the grievous effect of inorganic farming my mother have restarted the organic farming by using organic compost and methods. So now it is been 5 years or so our family farms have resumed organic farming and so also many of other family in my community.
We have called community help culture in our community. It is basically a group in which from all family a member is the member of this group. During the first month of the monsoon most of the houses needs repairing. The houses are made of muds and the roofs of the mud tiles and woods. These need to be repaired and reset before heavy monsoon arrives. So it requires repairing and resetting skill. It is very fun and participating as it is done as community help to a needy family.
This project could involve children. For more information see our guidelines and tips here.
