Established on 1st December, 2015, our movement is fast becoming one of the premier local non-governmental and non-profit organisations, which are positively impacting the local communities of Karonga district and even beyond. We are a fast growing grass root organisation with a long term vision. We are a team of twelve dedicated members, many of us coming from a background of community development studies and project management.

We are working in the thematic areas of:
    • Good Governance and Education:
Facilitation of access to schools for underprivileged girls and boys, improving the transparency of governmental activities for the local communities
    • Climate Change and Sustainable Agriculture:
Tree planting activities, promotion and construction of improved firewood cooking stoves, briquette fabrication from rice husks, promotion of organic farming techniques and raising awareness about environmental issues
    • Water, Sanitation and Hygiene:
Training of villagers in hygienic issues, waste collection activities, facilitation of the construction of public toilets and awareness raising about the importance of a clean and hygienic environment
    • Women and Youth Empowerment:
Training in income generation activities and encouragement to take part in decision making processes
    • HIV/AIDS and nutrition:
Training and awareness raising on HIV/AIDS prevention and the importance of healthy nutrition

We also have established a Community Resource center and we are working on the final touches on our first building at the site. We are already using the place meeting the Youths, Women and all communities for various activities and discussions. Our office is at this place now.

You will be able to engage yourself in Malawian everyday life, learn more about our culture, share your knowledge and get to know the locals and learn from them. You will also learn about how a grass root organization in a developing country operates. By providing your time and knowledge you will have a chance to make a difference in the lives of some of the poorest people in Malawi. Volunteering can be a great way to build confidence, develop personally, learn new skills and develop existent ones.We are sure it will be a lasting experience for you to stay with us.

As our organization covers different thematic areas, we are interested in volunteers from various backgrounds. Tell us about your interests and skills, and we can agree on a customized volunteer program for you. You can engage yourself directly with us in our thematic fields, or we can set you up with other institutions that we are working with, such as local schools or health centers.
Working with us in our environmental activities can consist in going into the local communities for the construction of cooking stoves, participating in tree planting, training of farming techniques and awareness campaigns.
Regarding WASH,volunteers can take part in cleaning activities and awareness raising about hygiene and waste issues.
Volunteers with interest or background in women’s and youth empowerment or health and nutrition issues can participate in income generation activity training, HIV/AIDS, nutrition and maternal health trainings and raising awareness. We can also arrange a stay in a local hospital for people with medical background.
Volunteers can offer their help as a teacher and assist in a Pre-school. Your input will be a great help and much appreciated as schools are often under staffed and lack resources. Experienced teachers are particularly welcome.
If you are interested in sports and recreation, we can set you up with local sports or musical clubs, and you can play with local children, coach them or teach playing an instrument.
Also very welcome are volunteers that have a background in the administration of NGOs and can help us to improve our internal structures.

We will make the accommodation arrangements with the Workawayers depending on the duration of their stay at the organization. Volunteers can stay with a host family, which is again a great opportunity to experience the culture of Malawi. When staying with a host, we will ensure you are safe and well looked after. Your food will be prepared by the family and you will receive three meals a day.

If the volunteer prefers staying on their own, other arrangements are also possible. For volunteers that are travelling in a car or are carrying tents, we can provide free access to a fenced space with running water and sanitation facilities available. In case it is needed we can also provide a charcoal stove for cooking. For people without camping equipment the option of renting a small private apartment can be discussed with us.

Now that our community resource center is almost finished, we will be able to accommodate volunteers interested at the center with members of our organisation for support when it comes to preparing meals. This will be great as our office is at the center and meetings are taking place at the same place.

Karonga town is located at the lakeshore in the northern part of Malawi. For the daily needs there is a big local market where you can get all kinds of food and other things, and various shops, small supermarkets and banks are available. Being at the lake you can go swimming, kayaking, snorkeling and relax by the lake in your free time. You can also go on a cruise on the lake. We have a museum in town that shows some findings of prehistoric humans, a dinosaur and information about Malawian history and culture. You can visit Livingstoniaand go hiking there in the beautiful scenery of the Nyika Plateau. You can visit different mines in the area if you are interested in mining. It is also possible to travel to Nkhata Bay for a weekend and go scuba diving in the lake there. The Vwaza Wildlife Reserve and National Park are both easily accessible from Rumphi - wildlife viewing can be done from a game viewing vehicle or on a bushwalk for the more adventurous. Or you can stay in Karonga where you can experience village life and culture, enjoy Malawian music, dance and learn some traditional cooking.

Most international flights go to Lilongwe International Airport. From Lilongwe you can get an executive coach to Karonga, which is usually an overnight journey. Alternatively you can get a coach to Mzuzu and there you can catch a minibus to Karonga on your own, or upon special arrangement, a member of our staff may meet you in Mzuzu and escort you to Karonga, using the local mini-buses.

Volunteers are responsible for arranging their own visas for Malawi, travel insurance and travel vaccinations. We recommend that volunteers take malaria tablets while here as Karonga is a malaria region; these should be attained before your visit.

Please bring culturally appropriate clothes (women should wear dresses, skirts or trousers below the knee) and clothes with light material, as it does get very hot in Karonga.
Internet access will be available using a local SIM card with data access, or in internet cafes.
