We have a 20 acre smallholding in north Northumberland, about an hour north of Newcastle and an hour and a half to Edinburgh.
I am a retired primary school teacher and my husband, Dave, is a retired high school teacher and together we have done a lot of building/renovation work on the cottage where we now live. It had not been lived in for 40 years but now we have a lovely home here .We have some sheep and hens , goats as well as 2 cats. The lambs are born in April and May. We have a polytunnel where we grow lots of our vegetables and fruit bushes and more vegetable areas outside. We have been making a garden as when we came here there was no garden at all but obviously plenty of space for one.
We Spend most of our time outside in the summer working on the garden, fields and woodland but we also enjoy cycling, mountain biking, walking and going to the local beaches. I work in a charity shop for one day a week and am also learning Spanish and trying to improve my French.Dave likes mending things, making things, building and always has some project on the go
!
Our garden has flowers, vegetables, fruit bushes, a polytunnel and a greenhouse. We have planted about 3000 trees since we have been here.
We are very concerned about the environment and climate change and as well as planting lots of trees, we have solar panels for electricity, a solar water heating panel and an electric car.

Exploring the area or using our bikes, going by bus/train to Newcastle, Edinburgh. We have a piano too.Also you would learn or improve your English and see lots of the local area. If you play an instrument our local ceilidh band would love you to come and play with them.

If we are away ( unusually!) We would like house sitters to come and look after our smallholding and especially our animals.The main tasks would be to feed the hens and collect the eggs; feed the sheep once a day; give the goats whatever they like to eat and fresh water and feed our 2 cats. We would like you to keep the cottage tidy and water our plants in the polytunnel and greenhouse.
At other times when we are at home we would like volunteers to help us around the smallholding with the garden, planting trees, looking after the woodland and fields and generally helping around the cottage.

Shielhope is about 2km from the village of Chatton where there is a small shop/ post office and a pub.The countryside around here is very beautiful and quite wild. The Cheviots are about 5 miles away to the west and the coast with its long sandy beaches and castles about 10 miles to the east. It is ideal country for cycling, walking, mountain biking and climbing (there are several crags nearby) so if you like the outdoors and don't mind being away from the city this is the ideal spot. The nearest towns with more shops, swimming pools etc are Alnwick (14 miles) or Berwick (16 miles). There is public transport from the village to Wooler and the coast and then on to Alnwick and Newcastle.
We have bikes that you can use too.

Sota was a very good and respectful workawayer. He helped with a variety of tasks including grass cutting and driving a small tractor. All in all, we felt immediately part of the community from the very first day. Northumberland is absolutely breathtaking, definitely worth visiting!
Nicole and Giulia were excellent house/ animal sitters. They looked after our cats, sheep , goats and hens when we were away and also our cottage.
The girls were very reliable and also friendly and happy. It was a pleasure to have them around and we had no worries about leaving them in charge when we went away for 8 days.

Ryuji was an excellent workawayer. He was hard working, polite and enthusiastic in all tasks, whether work or leisure. Ryuji helped with hay making, scything, weeding and also joined in with us when we went swimming in the sea and mountain biking. I had the most amazing week, all thanks to Julia, Dave, and their wonderful family.
It was right in the middle of haymaking season, so I mainly helped with that, but the balance between work and play was incredible. In just one week, We went swimming in the sea twice, enjoyed Dave’s band playing live, went mountain biking in the hills, played… read more croquet, and their grandson Fin even gave me an archery lesson! It’s hard to believe we did all of this in only a week lol.
Every meal Julia and Dave cooked was delicious and such a treat, using their backyard eggs, fresh salad bartered from their organic-farming neighbor, and an abundance of raspberries and blackcurrants. I felt so happy at every mealtime.
I feel so lucky and grateful to have met this wonderful family. I truly hope everything goes well with their new goats!
Julia and Dave were our first work away hosts. They live in a lovely cottage in a very rural area of Northumberland surrounded by incredible landscapes. It was a wonderful opportunity to get to know England outside of the big cities. We had a lot of fun feeding their animals and pets. Both Dave and Julia took us on beautiful walks for example… read more along the coast and included us in activities with their friends and family. One of our highlights was them taking us to their weekly ceilidh band practice sessions.
The tasks they gave us were very diverse, which we appreciated. We would especially recommend this host if you do gardening on a regular basis because even though we had at least some experience in gardening, Julia and Dave had other expectations of how long the tasks would take.
We sadly had to leave earlier than expected, because one of us had private family emergency. Julia and Dave responded to this very empathetic and checked in on us regularly after we left, which we really appreciate.
Marlene and Leo were very helpful and were keen to try all jobs from gardening to painting windows. They worked hard and also looked after our animals and house for us while we were away for 4 days.

Dave and Julia are absolutely living the life I’ve dreamed of for a long time, away from the rush of the city and following a sustainable approach to living. Time was spent doing wood chopping, fencing, hedge cutting, and painting, as well as looking after their lovely sheep, hens, and cats when they were away. We really enjoyed staying at Jules and Dave ´s cottage which is very well located in Northumberland (English most beautiful region by the way). They run a huge land where there ´s always to do. The surroundings are just breathtaking and as sportive as they are, they won’t hesitate to show you the best places to go to on a gentle cycling ride (good carfs required as it is quite hilly ;D). We ve spent unforgettable moments among their lovely family. Jules is very impressive; she is always busy as a bee, she will always make sure you don’t miss anything. As teachers, you ll be able to discuss about any subject for hours. Dave is one of the nicest person we ve ever met. He is a man of wisdom, and we really learned a lot from him, whether on a social plan than on a cultural one. Their own children and grand children were so kind toward us, it was a real pleasure to meet all of them and to play cricket in the garden together.
We've enjoyed our stay so much that we've planned to go and see them again for sure.

Vom Workawayer (Jisk) für Host
When things don't go as planned, you only hope everything will turn out right. And it did! The initial plan was to stay with Dave and Julia for two weeks, after which I would continue my travels through Britain. However, after a lovely week Covid-19 struck, and everything from pubs to museums closed around us. I thought this would be the end of my… read more travels, which instead of three months would only have lasted a week, but Dave and Julia allowed me to stay on for a bit and work on the farm while deciding what my next steps were going to be.
A week turned into two weeks, which turned into a month, in which time flew past as if I had been dreaming it all. It was lovely working outside, caring for the animals, driving a tractor, planting trees, cutting wood and doing some landscaping. I learned so much while I was here, and my initial travel plans which of course had been cancelled made place for an experience on which I will look back on with a smile in the future. There's a lot of history in the area which makes it great for walks with a destination. From the nearby castles of Chillingham and Bamburgh to the cup and ring marked rocks on the surrounding hills, there's plenty to see. Even though everything was in lockdown I did get to see some of the local area as I went on cycling rides with their bikes, which they happily supplied me with. I also really enjoyed entertaining Julia and Dave's grandchildren. We went into the woods to find potion ingredients, jumped on the trampoline and talked about Harry Potter and steam locomotives. Julia also maintains a daily rhythm around the house, which was good for me as I was used to getting up whenever I woke up, and sleeping whenever I felt like going to bed ;-)
I learned a lot of new skills, I changed my way of doing things and I enjoyed the Northumbrian countryside and beaches. The virus did not stop me from having a good time for these five weeks, thanks to the hospitality from Dave, Julia, Nicola and her children. I shall miss the home baked bread, pies, scones and cakes and the smell of daffodils and the sound of the Scots pines in the wind. Thank you all of you from the bottom of my heart, you made my journey worthwhile.

I was supposed to go to another family that cancelled at the last minute, and this amazing family answered me the same day and hosted me the next day, and I couldn’t have hoped a better place to be (appart from the hay fiver and the flies haha)!

We built a new fence for the goats, helped the lovely neighbors to build their polytunnel, did some gardening and picked hundreds of delicious red currants and black currants! We went three times to the beach, two times for a cycle ride, I visited Alnwick : despite the hard work I had time to have fun with them! When I had arrived there I had the impression that most of my stay would be cloudy and raining all the time, but it was almost the opposite. During the day was sunny and warm weather, and although it never exceeded a jacket, you could enjoy a few rays of warmth that is much appreciated.
I had a nice time there and I miss them! You have the doors open of my home in Catalonia!!

I have spent three wonderful weeks with this family and I had a great time with them. Dave, Julia and Nicola made me feel almost part of their family and were always ready to help me with my English. The landscapes are absolutely amazing. The work isn't too hard, too, and we made frequent pauses to drink a cup of tea all together.
I highly recommend this family to anyone and I already miss them!

I had a great time staying with this family. I almost felt part of the family. Especially playing music together in the evenings was really enjoyable. I miss that so much! We did also run together which was very nice.

Julia is a lovely girl. She got on very well with all of us here, from 18 month old Jessica to us older ones. Julia worked hard and carefully at all tasks and also was fun to have around.
