The Centre for Community Development is a community-based organization founded in 2016. It is based on lake Bunyonyi and consists of different projects:
1. Preparatory School (Nursery and Primary School)
Educates children from families who cannot afford to pay tuition fees and other school requirements. Currently, it involves 5 teachers, 1 cook, 2 staff members, around 103 children in the kindergarten and primary school.
2. Swimming lessons
Lake Bunyonyi is a large lake with 29 islands on it and many villages surrounding it. Most inhabitants do not know how to swim although the lake is relatively warm throughout the whole year (around 20°C) and Bilharzia-free which makes it perfect for swimming. By teaching children how to swim is a vital skill given the fact that transport around the lake is mainly by boats and canoes.we do this as a life saving skill.
3. Craft Project
Most residents in villages around the lake are farmers without regular income. Many of them know how to make crafts for everyday life from different materials like banana leaves, papyrus and eucalyptus trees. Currently, we help 20 local women and 10 men to sell their handmade items.
4. Piglet Project
Recently, we gave away piglets to 85 different families in diffrent villages in two yeas time,we started with 10pigs . Families take care of the piglets and when they reproduce, they pass the offspring on to another family. The goal is to provide a piglet for every family which will help them to pay for children education.
5. Cultural group
Involve 30 locals who practice traditional dances. We help them connect with tourist resorts to earn some money by performing for foreign visitors. They decide what to do with the money they earn.
6. Health Education
By teaching local people about hygiene, sanitation, family planning and environmental conservation, we try to create a better future for local communities.
7. Responsible Tourism
We try to benefit the local community from tourism by providing a home stay(camp site and guest house) for foreign visitors and connecting them with activities run by locals.
The aim of the organization is to support local community development through education, health care, creating jobs, connecting local people in cultural activities and traditions. We contribute to the lives of children with poor family background, orphans, farmers and unemployed people that live around Lake Bunyonyi.
We need some help with desighning website for our project and the school
We also have some other ideas, like craft school for locals who do not go to Secondary School or higher education institutions.

The volunteers will take part in responsible tourism. They will really get to know local people, their families, traditions and culture by participating in activities together with them. They will be able to learn some crafts, dances, make new friendships, taste and learn how to prepare local food and enjoy the beautiful nature and peaceful environment of the lake. Travellers will be able to make a change in the lives of locals and making Bunyonyi a better place to be.
Travellers can help the children with writing and reading skills in English (in this case, it is preferred to stay at least 2 months), hygiene, sanitation, sports games, music lessons, drawing, dance and drama lessons, home economics, sexual education and family planning, which is very important due to a high number of school drop-outs because of early pregnancies among girls and alcohol abuse among boys.
Volunteers can help locals with swimming lessons, teaching them practical skills like cooking (many vegetables and fruit can be grown here due to good climate conditions and fertile soil), baking, making different crafts, gardening, taking care of the animals, farming more efficiently etc. We would also like to find a way to properly dispose and recycle waste and take better care of the environment.
Some local villagers who are left without families and a place to stay could also use some hands with building their homes from local materials like eucalyptus trees, bamboo, papyrus and mud.

In the village of mukoni, there is a house built for foreign visitors and volunteers. It has 5 bedrooms, two rooms with two single beds and 3 rooms with double beds. There is also a shower, a toilet and a living room with a table and comfortable bench. The place has a terrace with a view of the lake where you can enjoy the beauty of the surroundings, observe many bird species (binoculars included) and stars at night (we also have some books about astronomy).
For larger groups or if someone would prefer, we also have a possibility of camping for 15 people (but you should bring your own sleeping bag).
Volunteers will be provided with 3 meals per day. For breakfast, we usually have pancakes, chapati, bread, buns, Ugandan tea or coffee, milk and fruits from local market like bananas, pineapples, mangos and passion fruits. For lunch and dinner, we prepare meals with rice, irish potatoes, sweet potatoes, matoke, groundnut sauce, beans, peas, cabbage, spinach or crayfish from the lake.
You can also prepare your own food if you wish. We can provide you with a gas cooker or a charcoal stove. If you need extra food, you can buy it at a local market. You can also visit a supermarket in the nearest town called Kabale, which is a 45 min drive with a boat and a car or a boda boda. For transport costs, a small contribution (from 1-5 USD; depending on the means of transport) is expected.
We would like to ask 4USD$ per day to cater for 3 meals a day. Our organisation doesn’t have money to pay for it. We hope that you can afford it and volunteer with us!
Travellers can enjoy hiking local hills with a
view of the lake Bunyonyi, they can go canoe trekking or on a boat cruise, visiting some of the 29 islands of the lake. They can play games with local people and visit tribes like Pygmies. Volunteers can go on a safari to Queen Elisabeth National Park, go chimpanzee tracking in Kalinzu forest, which is only a two hour drive away, to Lake Mburo National Park, which is a three hour drive away, visit Kisizi waterfalls, go to Mgahinga extinct volcanoes for gorilla trekking or mountain climbing or visit Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, which is famous for gorilla tracking.
Kigali city (capital of Rwanda) is only a two hour bus drive away from Kabale, the nearby town.
