  Welcome to our little part of Finnmark!
  We are a couple living in Vesterelv, in the far north of Norway, with our small pack of Siberian Husky sleddogs. My name is Ulrikke, I'm 23 years old and work as a Dental Hygenist. My fiance's name is Adrian, he's 25 years old and works at a High School. We spend most of our days surrounded by our seven amazing dogs and beautiful nature.
  
  Since our everyday life is closely connected to our dogs, we have a dogyard that needs regular care and attention. Therefore we are looking for friendly and responsible Workawayers who would like to become part of our daily life and help us with the dogs and different tasks around the property.
  
  The help can vary depending on the season and what needs to be done. Helping in the dogyard will be an important part of your stay - feeding and caring for the dogs, cleaning, keeping things organised and helping with general maintenance. There will also be smaller projects around the house and property, such as painting, repairing, chopping wood, cleaning, building or other practical tasks. We are happy to teach you what you need to know, so you don't have to be an experienced dog musher or handyman to stay with us. A positive attitude, willingness to learn, liking the outdoors and being comfortable with physical work are much more important. We prefer to host couples, as we both work full-time and have a long commute to work, so the days can be long for you. Since we are not always around, it is important that you are independent, self-motivated and comfortable spending some time on your own. We live in a remote area, so you should enjoy a quiet lifestyle and be able to entertain yourself during your free time. We recommend having a driver’s licence, as public transportation is very limited and having a car makes it much easier to get around and explore the area.
  
  Please note that you will not be training the dogs or going dog sledding as part of the Workaway tasks. If we have the time and opportunity, we would be happy to show you and perhaps take you on a dog sledding trip. This will depend on the season and temperatures.
  
  What we love most about living here is the nature and the feeling of space and freedom. Vesterelv is a small and peaceful place, far away from busy cities and surrounded by the beautiful landscapes of Finnmark. Vesterelv is close to Varangerbotn, where you can go in every direction to experience differens parts of Finnmark. Depending on the season, you can experience the midnight sun, autumn colors, snowy winter landscapes and, when we're lucky, the Northern Lights dancing across the sky.
  
  Please note that life in the Arctic is very different from what you may be used to. From mid-May to late July, we experience the midnight sun, with daylight around the clock. From late November to mid-January, we experience the polar night, when the sun stays below the horizon and there are only a few hours of twilight each day.
  
  The winter can be dark, cold and long, so it is important to be prepared for the Arctic climate. Good clothing is very important when living here during the winter. Warm outdoor clothing, wool base layers, a warm hat, mittens and good insulated winter boots are essential, especially when working outside with the dogs. Temperatures can get very low, so it is important to be well prepared and dress in layers.We think these unique seasons are a special part of living in northern Norway and a great experience for those who enjoy nature and a different way of life.
  
  If you enjoy being outdoors, animals, adventure and a slower pace of life, you will probably feel very much at home here. There are plenty of opportunities to explore the surrounding area, go hiking, experience the Arctic nature and simply enjoy the quietness of northern Norway.
  
  This is not a business or a workplace – it is our life, our home and our dogs. We are opening our home to you and hope you will feel like a part of our everyday life. We are looking for people who appreciate this and will treat our home, dogs and way of living with respect.
  
  We hope to welcome people who are curious about life in the Arctic, interested in dogs and outdoor life, and who would like to experience something a little different from an ordinary holiday in Norway.

  Kultureller Austausch und Lernmöglichkeiten

  We hope to learn from people from different countries and cultures, and we would love to hear about your traditions, food, languages and everyday life. In return, we are happy to share what we know and give you an authentic experience of life in northern Norway.
  Ulrikke is Sámi and can share knowledge about Sámi culture, traditions, reindeer herding, traditional food and clothing, including the Sámi gákti (traditional clothing). You can also visit the local Sámi museum and learn more about the history and culture of the area.

  Arbeit

  Most of the help will be around our dogyard and the dogs. Tasks include feeding the dogs, cleaning, filling water, keeping the dogyard tidy and helping with general care of the dogs. If we have puppies, socializing and training them will also be an important and fun part of your days. Training the dogs/dogsledding will not be a part of Workaway tasks.
  
  There will also be some practical tasks around the property, depending on the season and what needs to be done. This can include painting, chopping wood, small repairs, cleaning, small DIY projects like building/repairing doghouses, fix fences or doors in the dogyard.
  
  Most of the help will be independent, so you should be comfortable taking initiative and working on your own. We are always available if you have questions or need help, and we are happy to teach you everything you need to know. Some tasks can be physically demanding, so you should enjoy being outdoors and working with your hands.

  Unterkunft

  We live in an old family house that belonged to Ulrikke’s grandmother. The house has two floors and a basement.
  
  You will have your own area on part of the second floor, with two bedrooms, a small living room, a private toilet, a fridge and a small freezer. There is also a microwave, kettle, kitchen sink, dishwasher and some kitchen cupboards. The second floor used to have a kitchen, so there is still some of the old kitchen furniture, but there is no stove or oven. The old kitchen is now used as a bedroom, so there is limited kitchen space upstairs. There is no stove or oven, so cooking and frying will need to be done in the shared kitchen downstairs.
  
  There is a private toilet upstairs, while the shower is located in the basement. There is also a sauna in the basement, which you are welcome to use.
  
  We provide food and ingredients during your stay. We will do the main grocery shopping, and you are welcome to let us know if there are any foods or ingredients you would like or need.
  
  We usually have dinner together, while breakfast and lunch can be organised individually according to your own routine. You are welcome to use the shared kitchen for preparing your meals, and you will also have your own fridge and freezer upstairs.
  
  We are happy to adapt to different diets and food preferences, so please let us know about these in advance.

  We live in a small and quiet place, surrounded by nature. There are many opportunities to go hiking, explore the area and enjoy the outdoors during your time off.
  
  A car is useful if you want to explore more of Finnmark, as public transport is limited in our area. We are happy to help with transport when possible.
  
  Life here is quite simple and relaxed, and the dogs are a big part of our everyday life. We appreciate people who are respectful, tidy and comfortable living in a rural environment. We also value good communication and a positive attitude.
  
  We have a few simple house rules that we ask our Workawayers to respect:
  -No smoking indoors.
  -Keep shared areas clean and tidy.
  -Clean up after yourself, especially in the kitchen.
  -Take out the rubbish when the bins are full and put it in the outdoor bin.
  -Please keep noise to a minimum between 11 PM and 7 AM.
  -Be respectful of our home, belongings and neighbours.
  -Treat the dogs with care and follow our instructions around them.
  -Always make sure gates and doors to the dog yard are properly closed.
  -Do not feed the dogs anything without asking us first.
  -Let us know if something gets damaged or if there is a problem.
  -Let us know if you are going somewhere for the day or will be away overnight.
  -We appreciate good communication and a friendly, respectful atmosphere.
  
  We hope you will feel at home here and enjoy both the work, the dogs and your time exploring northern Norway.
