We have a pet rescue mission in the Zihuatenejo, Guerrero region of Mexico. We started officially in January 2017 and have rescued, aided or helped over 1000+ animals since then. Our goal is to create a self sustainable program, promote the local economy and most importantly spay and neuter as many animals (cats and dogs) as possible. We are a non-profit organization growing our foster and adopters network all over Mexico, US and Canada. We are big into community building and also saving the environment. Education is a big part of our mission besides the sterilization campaigns. We work with local artists and visionaries to come up with better ways to stay healthy on all levels. We are starting a kids surf team, participate in yoga for kids, and kids' workshops on how to treat animals with better care. We subsidize local families to spay and neuter their pets. We have a t-shirt program where the money goes straight to spay and neuter and we are looking for someone with creative ideas on how we can gain more awareness for our program.

You will learn how good the simple life can be and how to connect with nature through working with the animals and surf. You will learn to cultivate compassion for those in need and start to understand how we can make a difference in educating the local communities by example and creative community building ideas. It's a good chance to also practice Spanish with our local workers who help take care of our rescue center.
We require someone that loves animals and prefer volunteers who are coming to work with animals as their passion!
We are looking for these qualities:
1. Highly Organized
2. Clean and Neat
3. Can Communicate Well (with roommates and in group chat messages with staff and doctors)
We would love people to commit to a 2 month experience (minimum 1 month) working 5 hrs a day 5 days a week, either in the morning or in afternoon, so we can assure you are only here to pour your soul into to the street animals of Mexico. We also need people who are willing to educate children and help us volunteer in spay and neuter clinics. We prefer people who have experience giving medicine to animals, or at least are comfortable with it. For people with veterinarian or shelter experience possible paid long term positions available.
We need someone who is willing to get down and dirty in our rescue center and scoop poop, medicate and bathe animals, feed animals, clean the corrals, walk dogs, and are willing to spread the word about our program. We are looking for someone very handy in building or fixing fences and securing spaces for new arrivals. There is a lot of cleaning involved along with tending to animals. It's a selfless job that comes from the heart. Since you live with the dogs there are times where you feel like you may not have any time off...but you build good karma and will be rewarded for your dedication through various perks ! And if you're an animal lover it won't even feel like work.
The furbears will give you as much love as you give them, so we are looking for very compassionate people that are strong and stable emotionally. Couples or friends thrive here best working in pairs. The best volunteers are the most organized and are able to communicate very well.
We see a lot of disease and suffering, but that's why we do this...to lessen the hardships for those who can't take care of themselves. It's a very rewarding experience.
If you have any social media/marketing experience or skills we also need someone to help keep our Instagram and Facebook pages up to date. We need to keep spreading the word about our mission in order to raise awareness, funds and love for the furbears!
It's hard to say exactly what is required of you until you arrive depending on how many dogs we have at any given moment and what kind of medical attention they require. 70% of dogs and cats are discarded into the streets of Mexico. It's a huge problem and we are working hard to change it. That's why we need people who think about helping animals as your sole reason for coming. This is not a party at the beach, or social experience to meet people like a hostel environment (however, there is an opportunity for fun and a social life). People who can be ok with loving on the animals and reading in a hammock or meditating on the beach will thrive better. That being said, it can be an adventure of lifetime if you are coming with the right intentions.

The house has:
-Three comfortable, spacious bedrooms - one master bedroom with a private bathroom, usually reserved for couples; one bedroom and a loft room with a shared bathroom. All bathrooms have running and hot water.
-Fully functional kitchen.
-Some basic food supplies are provided such as rice, beans, eggs, pasta, and popsicles. Sometimes we even have special SFS dinners when we have group meetings.
-An unlimited supply of unconditional animal love!
During the lower seasons, we collaborate with some beautiful beach side resorts that allow volunteers to hang out or even spend the night on days off.
There is a nice, shaded hammock on the porch where a several dogs live in the garden. Other furbears live in corrals surrounding the property. It's a noisy job at times, so you might need ear plugs if you're not a deep sleeper. We kennel the barking furbears at night, which house mates/volunteers with be responsible for since you live with them.
Some local restaurants kindly give some food or discounts to volunteers. Amazing Mexican food awaits on every corner. The shops are just a block away on the main strip. Free meditation and donation based yoga is available all week at Present Moment. We take frequent trips to the local free hot springs. There will also be multiple chances to visit the towns of Ixtapa and Zihuatanejo (30 min away) to do some supermarket shopping or to just see the town. Rides to nearby surf breaks are available at times as well as one free surf lesson and free board rentals. Take advantage of nearby sights and activities: hiking, kayaking, caves, horseback riding, etc. You'll have even more surfing or exploring opportunities once you meet local people.
Tronones is surf paradise! There are perfect point breaks 20 min and 40 min away. With this position comes free yoga and hot springs visits. There are local caves, fishing villages, and rolling coconut fields. Get involved in eco-projects and kids education. Extras are island snorkeling, sailboat, SUP, horseback riding and salsa dancing.
