Beschreibung
The Castle is located in Tullamore, the largest and principal town in County Offaly, near the heart of Ireland. At the Castle, we do everything we can to be part of the community’s life.
We always have projects underway, so if you have some time and would like to help with conservation or general upkeep, let us know! Few castles in Ireland are fully run by volunteers for the benefit of the community and the public at large. It’s a great responsibility, but one we’ve learned to manage with dedication. Alongside the hard work and discipline, there’s plenty of fun to be had.
The Castle is a Grade A Historic Building, protected under the Granada Convention, and our job is to keep it alive—without being stuffy. Maybe YOU would like to join us for a while?
We need all kinds of skills, and sometimes projects wait for years for the right person to come along, prove themselves, and get stuck in.

The Castle is a vibrant community at the heart of the Heartland in central Ireland, surrounded by ancient Neolithic and monastic sites. We are an all-volunteer group, with some members serving since 1969 and others more recently joining our efforts. One in every five volunteers is local, taking the lead in driving our activities, while the majority come from across the world, offering specialized skills or simple labor in exchange for a deep immersion in Irish culture, event management, and filmmaking.
The castle's roof was removed in 1968, sparking a wave of goodwill that led to its restoration. Today, the castle stands as a Grade A Historic Monument of international cultural importance, recognized under the Granada Convention in 2003. Though the heirs to the Earldom retain ownership, our long-term goal is to establish a Community Land Trust of historic significance.
We understand the journey ahead is long—it already has been. Many volunteers have come and gone, leaving their lasting mark. If you join us, you too will leave a legacy here, as you immerse yourself in this unique community. You have much to gain, and we, the volunteers who live here, have much to gain from you.Arbeit
We're seeking assistance in drafting a new development plan for the castle and its surrounding area, aimed at establishing it as a public resource. Ideal candidates include grant proposal writers or anyone with experience in town planning, architecture, or related fields.
We're also always open to individuals looking to improve or learn new skills in building, construction, and DIY, working alongside our onsite engineers and renovation experts.
In addition, we need long-term volunteers to help with cleaning and maintaining the extensive spaces we manage, as well as those with an interest in gardening and landscape maintenance. However, ACCOMODATION SPACE FOR VOLUNTEERS IN THIS CATEGORY IS LIMITED.Sprachen

For fire safety and thermal insulation, separate quarters are located less than 50 meters from the castle, offering single and double rooms, along with shared bathroom facilities. The building was purpose-built to accommodate up to six volunteers in four rooms: two single rooms and two double rooms (one with a bunk bed) for shared occupancy. However, it’s rare to have all six spaces filled, and usually, no more than four volunteers are present at any given time.
Ample groceries are provided for volunteers to prepare breakfast, lunch, and dinner in the communal kitchen, fondly referred to as "the cottage," which also serves as a living room with armchairs by a cozy stove fire. A roster is typically arranged among volunteers, with everyone taking turns to cook and handle domestic duties. During the summer, we also enjoy a special communal meal once a week, bringing together everyone living and working at the castle to celebrate. Was noch ...
