The Project: This 5-story Bamboo house is built like a wedding cake, with 360° views. To the east you look across the river and over the tops of the mangroves, to the south you have a view of the soccor field, to the west a view of the village and even the ocean from the top floor.. This bamboo palace has been built to live in harmony with the elements and surrounding nature, with open walls on every floor. Each floor has a spectacular view, with views from the showers and the toilets too! This home has been gradually built of bamboo, recycled, and natural materials by loving local hands over the past 1 years (and we are still going!)

Your host: I fell in love with beautiful Mompiche, moved here to start building my dream house in 2006. Nick-named 'Sirena', originally 'Nancy', a massage therapist from Esalan in Big Sur California. As a fun-loving, quirky and passionate host, on arrival Sirena will give you a tour of the village to show you all the unique experiences and local insights, and introduce you to the local community, and all the cool little hidden spots. I love helping volunteers to fall in love with Mompiche, healthy living, cooking with the exotic local ingredients and playing dominos!

Ideal volunteers: We are looking for self-motivated volunteers, someone that when they see something needs to be done they do it. This accommodation and the village are well suited to volunteers who are laid back, eco-friendly nature lovers, unpretentious and adventurous. I have a firm 2 week minimum, please don't ask to come if you don't have at least two weeks to stay.

The neighbourhood: Mompiche is a quaint fishing/surfing village with a pristine 40-mile crescent moon bay and a vibrant community of locals, expats and visitors. From October to April there are world-class waves, attracting surfers from around the world. It is surrounded by jungle with monkeys and tons of birds, including toucans and parrots. Don’t be deceived by Mompiche’s quaint size - it boasts a lively community with lots of things to do.

This home is located a short stroll (3-5 min.) from restaurants, bars, shops, beaches and much more!

The surrounding area is green and beautiful. There are many islands and sights nearby to explore, including Playa Negra and Isla Portete. If there is no swell here in Mompiche, you don't have to go far to find it. Walking up the river brings you into a whole different world full of noisy monkeys, birds, toucans, parrots, in an exotic display of flora and fauna. Chocolate making, basket weaving, yoga, and coconut cracking classes are available. Tours of the jungle, yoga and other class can be arranged. You can explore the incredible surrounding area on foot or in kayaks, on horseback, or a motorboat.

How it works: I ask for a contribution of $10 a week for all the bottled water you can drink, this also covers the expenses of gas, electricity, and toilet paper for a bed in my dream house. If you want to use the internet, I charge $5 per week, I have just hooked up with fiber optics, very fast, the best internet available. You can choose to participate in 5 breakfasts and 5 dinners for $35 a week. I only ask for 15 hours of work a week when participating in the meals. By the way, I am a very delicious and healthy cook.

I have a 2-week minimum. Firm. Please don't ask to come if you don't have at least 2 weeks to volunteer. Thank you.

Please let me know when you want to come, how long you plan to stay and if you plan to join us for the meals.

Don't be a tourist, come and be a part of the community.
Learn everything about Bamboo, I have made lots of mistakes so you can see examples of bamboo work done right and done wrong.
Learn how to cook with all the local exotic ingredients like giant shrimp, clams, all different kinds of fish, make homemade coconut milk, cook with the best chocolate in the world grown right here in Mompiche.
Learn to make chocolate from the bean to the cake.
Learn or practice your skills surfing on world-class waves. Our waves come in sets of four, the first is small for beginners to the fourth for the more seasoned surfer.
Take a jungle tour and see monkeys, toucans, and much more. Learn the uses of local herbs and plants.
I can set you up with a very good Spanish teacher if interested.

We just changed the roof from “toquilla” (thatched grass) to a recycled tetra pack. In doing so we discovered all the bamboo under the toquilla roof was rotten and we had to replace all the bamboo. When we did this we had to tear out the lighting, outlets, bathrooms etc. which we are currently replacing. When we’re ready, the next big job is to install recyclable bottles shower on the first floor for when you come back from the beach. Also, have plans to build a breakfast nook. There is always bamboo to be cured and varnished.

There is a new ATM in Mompiche that does not work most of the time. I highly recommend you bring the cash you will need while you stay here. The nearest bank is 2 hours away by bus. If you want to use the internet I charge $5 a week. Or you can use internet cafes.
