Staying with Anna in Bettolle was probably the best first Workaway experience I could've asked for. On the day of arrival she picked me up by car and made me feel very comfortable at her home from the very first moment. … read more the heart of Tuscany, surrounded by picturesque hills, staying there is just a dream. The work included not so difficult tasks in the garden (cleaning up, painting the bench, etc.) and preparing the rooms for the guests. In total working time was 4-5 hours a day, so I had a lot of time for discovering the nearby cute little towns in the afternoon. Oh and her dog, Khaleesi is just so sweet:)
I stayed with Anna just one week in October 2023, I wish I could stay longer.. I will come back for sure and I can truly recommend Anna as a host. Last year (2023) in July I went to stay with Anna and her daughter Isola in Bettolle. 9 months later Anna and I are still in contact and catch up every now and then, which just proves what a wonderful host she was. From the very beginning I felt like I was a part of their family. We would often stay up late chatting on the patio, eating amazing

Anna was kind enough to drive Isola and I to some nearby towns like Cortona and Montepulciano, otherwise we took the train from Sinalunga to Siena, Arezzo and Pienza. Bettolle itself is a beautiful town with very few tourists. The work I did was extremely enjoyable, as I spent most of the time outdoors working in the veggie garden or in the garden in front of the house amongst the 10 cats and their dog Kalissi! I have so many amazing memories from when I stayed with Anna and Isola - watching outdoor movies in the town, drinking too many Aperols, swimming in the neighbour’s pool, and a trip to the hot springs near Bagno Vignoni in the Val d’Orcia. My time in Bettolle was unforgettable and I really wish to go back someday!! I can’t expect more than this time. I felt like I was in a dream. She took me to the city center of Bettolle and surrounding other cities, such as Montisi, Cortona. The historic streets and buildings are overwhelming.

I couldn’t have wished for a better start on my journey! This was my first workaway experience and Anna made me feel at home from the moment I arrived.
Almost two months later I left Bettolle feeling like I’d learnt so much. The house restoration is a wonderful project and it’s fascinating to see the detail that has gone into every inch of the
… read more building and the eco measures that are being installed, with the underfloor heating, solar panels, etc.
My work involved various tasks in the garden and the building, such as collecting and moving firewood, whitewashing, and preparing the 100 or so olive trees ahead of the harvest. Together with other volunteers I then spent two wonderful weeks harvesting the olives by hand and learning so much about the best ways to prune olive trees, collect and store the olives, and the process that turns them into deliciously fresh olive oil at the mill.
In my free time, I had the chance to explore the glorious countryside surroundings and make day trips to the likes of Montepulciano, Siena, and Orvieto, all a short distance away. Anna also introduced me to several local producers from whom she sources most of her food and wine, as well as a lovely evening at the Festa dell’Olio Nuovo in a traditional Tuscan hilltop village.
I’m sincerely grateful to have had such an enjoyable experience, been so warmly welcomed, given a proper birthday celebration (with cake and all sorts!), given lifts when needed, and, ultimately, been made to feel like one of the family and meet so many great people, not least Anna herself.
