I stayed at TBB for three weeks and I definitely would have stayed longer if I could. From the moment I arrived I felt welcome and I just met the most amazing people here. There is a schedule every week, so you know exactly what you'll be doing and the work is really easy (just as the profile describes). All the jobs are well explained and
… read more everyone helps each other out. It's just a great environment to life, so I was not really surprised that most of the volunteers had been there already for months.
I also have to empathise how aware the whole (management) team is and how quick they respond. We had some unpleasant guests that made some of us feel very uncomfortable and they had to leave the Hostel immediately.

How lucky I am that I got to kick off my NZ trip at TBB!!
I felt comfortable right from the moment I arrived there, the Team is so welcoming and the atmosphere in the Hostel is just unique, warm and homey.

My experience at the hostel was just amazing, lovely people and lovely staff! The hostel is really welcoming, with so many small things that made me feel home: first the chocolate pudding of course, but also the music instruments and games that we can freely use to play all together, the little plants and candles on the tables, the fire to stay

I had an amazing workaway experience here! When I arrived I was planning on staying for about 4 weeks but ended up staying almost 4 months. I met so many wonderful people and made lots of new friends that I hope to keep in contact with even once I leave Nelson and New Zealand. Amazing experience staying and working. The staff here (fran, arno, georgie and henk-jan) are awesome. They are so helpful. They have such good energy and are so passionate about making the hostel the best it can be.

This is a magical place, if you can get the opportunity to stay there dont hesitate to say yes. I stayed for 6 weeks and met such great people, loved exploring the area especially the river/walks and all the card games. The work is straight forward and always clearly explained and rewarded with cookies afterwards. I'm really thankful for all it. :)

I was initially coming for 3 weeks but ended up staying there for nearly 3 months and it became more like my home than just a job. The work involved making beds, cleaning the kitchens, social areas and bathrooms, as well as being on call overnight 1/2 nights per week. … read more well as the cleaning tasks, I spent quite a lot of my time there repainting an outdoor mural and the outdoor furniture which was great. The managers Uli, Henk-Jan and Fran were always up for a laugh and made us all feel welcome and appreciated (a special thanks to Georgie for the muffins :)) I am so thankful that the hostel remained open and we all had such a safe, warm and cosy place to live during lockdown. Oh and a good tip- you can eat chocolate pudding all day if you save some for breakfast :). This hostel is my favourite in New Zealand so far and I'll be back very soon!

I've spent beautiful 3 weeks in the hostel. The crew is friendly and amazing as well as the owner that casually brought us fruits from her garden and very delicious cookies. the work is different everyday and you get to meet very nice people all the time.

A little late after moving on in post-covid19-times in New Zealand I am finally able to write a review to this wonderful hostel. A planned stay of three weeks turned into 3 months and I just can say that I had the time of my life here. As a workaway project it wss really fair and respectful regarded to the amount of (2-3) hours of work a day with
… read more one day off as well as one overnight-shift on which we were honoured with serving the free pudding. Every expectation was well explained as well as the work itself was a great mix of routine combined with odd jobs from time to time; one of us was even painting the whole outside area. Talking to the managers Fran, Uli and Henk was always fun and they definitely make it such a special place as well.
As all the workawayers stay at least for three weeks, it is likely to meet and become friends with diverse people, and the cozy social areas in the living room, next to the fire, in the kitchen or outside always offer space for socializing with guests as well. The soundtrack played from the speakers all day long is a relaxing background sound and after 3 weeks you might be able to sing karaoke along with it. More serious I want to comment the lockdown situation here and how impressive the owners as well as the whole team managed this challenging situation. They offered us workawayers always a safe and homely place to stay and really made the best out of the situation of being more or less isolated with 25 people for several weeks. The owner Georgie even practiced yoga with us twice a week and always made sure that we all stayed safe and corona-free together. Even if this situation probably won't happen again, it just showed me how much the whole team cared about the hostel and guests as well as greatly about the workaway project. I can highly recommend coming here and might even return myself. :)

The Backpackers is a wonderful place filled with good people, good energy and peaceful vibrations. Fran, Uli and Hank were great to work for. This is a really special hostel, such good energy in the common area every night.

I’m super late on posting this, sorry, but this was our first workaway (with many to follow) and was by far one of the best! Jared and I stayed here for about 5 months and enjoyed every second of it! … read more to work with. The work was never too hard and was split between about 6 workers at a time, on a rotating job list. It was between 2-3.5 hours of work a day just helping around the hostel. Accommodation was a shared room for the workers with our own bathroom. There are two kitchens, so you can almost always find a spot to cook at dinner time, but don’t miss out on the famous chocolate pudding because it is amazing! Anyway, working here we fell head over heels in love with Nelson and would happily go back again one day. Thank you so much to everyone who made Tasman home!
