    Descrição

We are an old coastal ferry and cargo vessel from 1959. We are a good mixture of old sailors, new dreamers, history buffs, people who love to tinker and most of all, we love to sit, talk and sail.

During the last eight years, we have lovingly restored her former glory and she is now listed as a fully seaworthy ocean-going cultural heritage. our boat is registered in the Volunteer Register, supported by the Norwegian government and listed with the Riksantikvar, the directorate for cultural heritage. We pride us in having the honor of officially representing a part of Norwegian costal history.

With such an old lady we are always busy with small jobs and improvements during the days she is moored. Never far away from a coffee break and most of the times so lost in reminiscing and storytelling that we surely have some more tinkering to do “tomorrow” or after just one more cuppa ;-)

We are not only regularly taking her out for a spin but journeys up to Spitsbergen and down to Bergen count for some of the best memories of the last years. Between 40 and 60 days a year, we are at sea. Often with paying guest making sure we can keep the Mårøy going for many decades to come. Daytrips during the summer are frequent and even longer tours up and down the arctic coast and in between the hundreds of islands are a permanent feature.

A bit about volunteering on board.
You eat free food on board. We buy in what you need. Then you can make wishes, and we will arrange for you to cook your own food. When we are on tour, we cook food for all volunteers. from 6 to 12 people. You get your own cabin, then there is a shower on board, two toilets, and a washing machine for clothes, other volunteers do not shower on board, so it will only be you and one other volunteer who will live permanently on board.
We use black shirts and aprons. Bring good shoes. Remember it can be a bit cold, so if you have a warm sweater and jacket. We have internet and TV on board.
Every Monday we have from 18.30 - 21.00 members' evening and open boat.
Waffles and coffee/tea are made for all visitors and members.
Monday to Friday from approx at 09.30 there are usually two or more volunteers from Hammerfest working on something on board. Painting, maintenance. Then they eat lunch as a team, talk as a team, and drink tea and coffee. So there are volunteers on board about 5 days a week. The boat is located in the center of Hammerfest, so it is within walking distance to the park, square, shops, restaurants, pubs, etc.
We hope to have you ombord at least 4 weekend and hope you are more than 20 years old.

You would stay on board the ship in one of our Guest cabins and be part of our volunteer crew. In its majority, we are retired seafaring folk and fishermen from Hammerfest. Almost every day some of us meet on board to plan, prepare, tinker or simply to enjoy a good conversation.
You would be part of our sailing crew, could learn a little about nautical navigation, the arctic seas, running the engines, old traditions and our food culture up here in the arctic.

You would stay on board the ship in one of our guest cabins, a perfect location as for most of the days the boat is moored right in the centre of Hammerfest.

You would have free access to Wi-Fi on-board. The fridge is yours to loot and the lounge rooms yours to do just that, lounge. Showers and other facilities are shared - however, apart from the days we are sailing with guest you would be the only ones using them.
It might be necessary to share your cabin with a fellow volunteer during overnight trips if we have many guests on board.

    Algo mais...

Most of the days the boat is moored right in the centre of Hammerfest. Especially during the summer, we have a variety of cultural events and festivals. It’s easy to come into contact with the locals and any of the other 60 or so nationalities having made Hammerfest their home.

Reindeers are in town and empty beeches, the fantastic artic nature with its mountains, glaciers and wild berries are just a short buss or ferry ride away. All attractions in north of Norway’s polar circle can be discovered over the weekends. Weeklong hiking trips can literally start right off the boat and the bustling city of Tromsø is just half a day’s ride away the our postal ship Hurtigruten.

With frequent short and long distance buss- boat and ferry routes and a regional airport you are always just a quick jump away from anywhere you want to go.
