  Welcome to a traditional Norwegian homestead in Eidskog, close to the Swedish border. The farm is surrounded by forests, lakes and quiet countryside. Life here is closely connected to the animals, the seasons and the weather, and no two weeks are quite the same.
  
  I live here with Norwegian Red Polled cattle, an old native cattle breed, as well as a horse, cats, chickens and bees. The homestead also includes farmland, forest and several old buildings that are an important part of its history and everyday life.
  
  This is a good place for someone who enjoys practical tasks, wants to learn and would like to become part of everyday rural life. It is not a retreat, an organised holiday or a place where someone else plans all your free time. The surroundings are peaceful and remote, so you need to be comfortable managing your own time as well as taking part in our shared life.
  
  You do not need extensive farming experience. Character and attitude are more important. I appreciate people who are curious, reliable and willing to learn; who observe what is happening around them; and who gradually become able to complete familiar tasks independently.
  
  I will explain unfamiliar tasks and help you get started. In return, I expect you to listen carefully and ask when something is unclear. Saying that you understand when you do not understand can create unnecessary problems, especially around animals and farm activities. Honest communication is therefore essential.
  
  Mistakes are acceptable. Everyone makes them, especially while learning. What matters is telling me, taking responsibility and helping to find a solution. Trust, honesty, consideration and accountability are the values that matter most to me.
  
  The best match is not necessarily the person with the strongest CV. It is someone who genuinely wants to contribute, is interested in the people and animals around them, and understands that a shared household works well only when everyone takes some responsibility.

  Most of the cultural exchange here grows naturally from everyday life: working together, sharing meals and talking about farming, local history, traditions and the choices involved in maintaining an old homestead.
  
  I grew up at the homestead where my parents still live, while I now live at another old homestead nearby. I know much of the history of both places. In 1933, my grandfather bought the forested land where my parents now live. He harvested the timber himself, built the houses and cleared the land to create fields. I enjoy sharing stories about how people lived here in the past, how rural life has changed and how we are trying to preserve and reuse what previous generations built.
  
  You may learn about animal care, pasture routines, gardening, food preservation and the seasonal rhythm of a Norwegian farm. Depending on your interests and the time of year, there may also be opportunities to learn about cattle, bees, traditional buildings and practical approaches to self-sufficiency. The old buildings provide an interesting glimpse into traditional farm life. During the right seasons, we may also pick wild berries and mushrooms and use them to make jam or other food.
  
  From late June to August, we sometimes visit a local historical homestead and farm museum. Outside the summer season, we sometimes take part in another well-established Norwegian tradition: the monthly taco dinner.
  
  I enjoy conversations and sharing knowledge, but cultural exchange requires curiosity from both sides. You will get much more from the stay if you ask questions, show interest and take part in daily life. The experience is especially suited to people who are interested in ordinary, modest rural life rather than organised tourism or a commercial farm experience.
  
  English is our shared language. When we are together, especially during meals, shared activities and tasks, we use English whenever not everyone understands the same language. This allows everyone to follow the conversation, prevents anyone from feeling excluded and helps create the inclusive atmosphere I want here.

  Ajuda

  The normal arrangement is approximately 25 hours of help per week. Tasks connected to the farm, animals, outdoor areas and agreed projects are included in these hours. We use a whiteboard to plan the week, including helping time and days off.
  
  Outside the agreed helping hours, your free time is your own. At the same time, this is a shared home and a living farm, not an arrangement where every small contribution is classified and counted. Cooking together, washing dishes, cleaning up after yourself and taking a reasonable share of ordinary household responsibilities are part of living together and are shared by everyone.
  
  I respect the distinction between helping time and free time, but I am not a good match for someone who is very focused on counting individual minutes or defining every small act of participation as work. I am looking for people who value a fair overall balance and are comfortable with the natural give and take of communal life.
  
  Because animals, weather and seasonal work do not always follow a timetable, plans may occasionally change. Because I am often busy with work during the daytime, some of the agreed helping time may take place in the afternoons, evenings or at weekends. Flexibility works both ways, and changes to the schedule do not mean adding extra helping hours.
  
  The tasks vary considerably with the season, the weather and what is happening on the farm. Examples include:
  
  helping care for cattle and the other animals
  
  checking pasture fences and helping with simple pasture routines
  
  helping with the bees from spring onwards
  
  stacking prepared firewood and helping keep the wood-storage area tidy
  
  gardening, weeding and maintaining outdoor areas
  
  
  sorting stored items and helping make the old barns and their surroundings cleaner and more organised
  
  helping me with small, informal upkeep tasks suited to your ability and interests
  
  All help is limited to everyday, non-specialist activities connected to sharing life on a homestead. Anything that requires professional qualifications is handled separately. Small practical activities are adapted to your experience, carried out with guidance and intended as opportunities to participate and learn.
  
  Some tasks are done together with me. Others may be done with my father, who speaks Norwegian, or independently after you have learned the routine. When helping across a language difference, patience, observation and asking questions are particularly helpful.
  
  Being proactive does not mean starting unfamiliar activities or using tools or equipment without asking. It means noticing ordinary things, completing agreed tasks, asking what the next priority is and gradually taking responsibility for routines you already know.
  
  Shared household tasks are part of living here. Everyone cleans up after themselves, helps with meals and contributes to keeping common areas pleasant. I am looking for people who participate naturally rather than waiting for someone else to manage every detail.
  
  You must bring suitable clothes and footwear for both practical work and your free time. Please ask if you are unsure what to bring. In winter, warm wool layers, proper footwear and windproof outer clothing are essential. Temperatures can occasionally fall to –35°C, and snow may remain for much of the winter.
  
  Mobile phones are of course welcome, but not during meals or while we are working together, except when needed for a practical reason. Being present makes both learning and communal life better.
  
  Before confirming a stay, I prefer to have a video call. This gives both of us an opportunity to ask questions and decide honestly whether the arrangement feels right.
  
  A good match is someone who:

  If you send a request, please do not send only a generic message. Tell me why this particular place and lifestyle appeal to you, what you hope to learn, what practical experience you have, and how you feel about living communally in a remote area. Please also mention whether you drive a manual car and confirm that you have read the full profile.
  
  I am especially interested in people who would like to stay for a longer period. A minimum stay of approximately one month is normally preferred because it takes time to learn the routines, build trust and become comfortable with the animals and tasks.

  I can understand German to some extent if you speak slowly, but I am not able to speak German very well.

  Acomodação

  Workawayers live in the same house as me. This is a shared home rather than separate guest accommodation. The kitchen, bathroom and living areas are communal, and respect for shared spaces, agreed routines and the people around you is essential.
  
  Everyone contributes to daily household life. This includes helping with meals, cleaning up after yourself and taking part in regular cleaning of the common areas. Living together is an important part of the exchange, not simply accommodation alongside the tasks.
  
  Food is included, and we normally eat simple, wholesome meals together. Breakfast and lunch usually consist of bread, cereal or other simple food, while dinner is the main cooked meal. Breakfast is normally between 6:30 and 7:30, and dinner is usually between 17:00 and 19:00, although work and farm life may sometimes change these times.
  
  I try to avoid food waste and use surplus food well. Leftovers are shared household food and may be served for dinner the following day. Please do not prepare large quantities of additional food for yourself without asking. If you require a specialised or expensive diet, we should discuss what is practical before confirming the stay.
  
  You will naturally have privacy and time to yourself. At the same time, I am looking for people who want to join meals, conversations and some shared activities. If you prefer to spend nearly all your free time alone in your room or on your phone, this will probably not be the right exchange.
  
  Unfortunately, you cannot bring a dog because my cat is not accustomed to dogs.
  
  The farm is in a very rural location, with no public transport nearby. The closest transport connection is approximately 15 kilometres away. Experience driving a manual car is strongly preferred, but use of a car is not automatically included in the exchange. If you do not drive but are otherwise very motivated and comfortable with the isolation, please ask before applying.
  
  When you arrive, we will go through the house rules and practical safety information together. You will also complete a short form about matters such as your experience, emergency contact, food allergies and preferences. We use WhatsApp for relevant household information, so you need to have the app and respond to practical messages during your stay.

  Before coming here, please make sure you are vaccinated against tetanus.
  
  If you are not from the EU / EEA / Schengen area, you are responsible for having the correct visa or residence permit. If you are unsure about the rules, please ask before applying.
  
  The house is located in a very rural and remote area. Public transport is limited, and car use is therefore only possible by specific agreement in advance. It is not part of the standard exchange.
  
  If car use is agreed upon, you must be a confident, experienced and careful driver, and treat the car with full responsibility and respect.
  
  I value honesty and accountability. In the unlikely event of damage caused by negligence or irresponsible driving, you will be expected to cover the costs.
  
  I know this sounds direct, but clarity prevents misunderstandings and helps create a safe and fair environment for everyone.
  
  I also have a few bicycles that can be fixed and used if you enjoy cycling. I have a small boat that you may use on the lake next to the house when there is no ice. I also have access to other boats on nearby lakes, as well as a canoe in the garden.
  
  Camping, hiking and fishing are all possible in the area. In your free time, there are many opportunities to enjoy nature. I have fishing gear available if you are interested.
  
  If you enjoy hiking, you may see a lot of wildlife in its natural habitat. Moose, foxes and rabbits are common, as well as many bird species. Wolves also live in the area, but they are rarely seen. Early autumn mornings and late evenings are usually the best times for wildlife observation.
  
  In season, you can find berries and mushrooms in the forest. We often collect and use them for jam, cooking and everyday meals.

  The internet connection is normally good and uses Telenor’s 5G mobile network. The speed may be reduced if the monthly data limit is exceeded, although this has rarely been a problem. If you need a large amount of data, we should discuss this in advance.
