I’m French, my husband is Italian. We have 3 sons, adults and not often at home.
We live in a big house in the north of Italy at Cellatica near Brescia.
I’m a ceramicist and my husband taught electronic in high school but he is now retired
We love nature, mountains, lake, bikes (we use it a lot). I like gardening and we have a big vegetable garden which would like to become community and social in the next future.

In our family, for 20 years we have hosted women with a difficult situation (sometimes with children) for a short or a long time. It’s a voluntary service done with Caritas of Brescia. At the moment, one woman (she has three boys: eleven, six and three years old), my healthy 93 years old mother in law and my quiet French father (90 years old) are with us.
We have had a lot of very good experiences with Workaway over the past six years. Woman and male workawayers interested in family life, gardening or cooking too can find a place among us.
We would like to host and share our daily lives with someone who speaks English (but others who speak Italian or French for example are welcome as well) because my sons and I need or like the English language. We try to be a big family sharing meals, housework, gardening, childcare, talking with Grandparents and outdoor activities like cycling, walking and obviously the good moments of family life!
We want you to feel comfortable with the work that you do, so if you just communicate with us what you like, we are flexible.

We are active members with other hosting websites. In some years we have seen people from every part of world ! Wonderful.

The volunteer will have his own bedroom. We can be a lot of people at home (up to 10) so the bathrooms are shared.

We live in Cellatica, a little village (4500 inhabitants) and it’s easy to reach to Brescia with the bus number 13 (25 minutes to the railway station of Brescia), and you can walk 10 minutes to bus stop easily in a safe village atmosphere. Milan is 1.5 hours away and the lakes are 20-30 minutes away. We have bikes for all too, so that you have the freedom to bike to the bus stop or somewhere else and back on your own schedule. When we have guests, it’s for us an opportunity to visit or do something together sometimes as well. There are the lakes, the mountains, cities like Brescia, Bergamo and even Venice nearby to explore.
The nearest airport is Bergamo or Milan, depending on where you are coming from.

Our first workaway experience was really successful. Just one month before we decided to come to Hedwige’s house and spent 10 days with this amazing family.

Firstly, we were a bit anxious about this trip but when we met this family closer, we had no more
worries. The family consists of Hedwige, her husband - Maurizio, their… read more three sons ( just one lives with them ) , Hedwige’s mother in law , the woman from Marroco and her two sons. All the people were really kind for us even if we didn’t understand each other.We spent a lot of time talking and sharing our experience together. It was really important for the family to gather in the evening and had dinner together. During the meal and all the day we chatted mainly with Hedwige and the other workaway we stayed with. Maurizio tried to speak English with us and we were able to talk a bit. Elia (the youngest son) also spoke with us few times. The boys ( 1 years old and 6 years old) were so sweet, we played with them many times. The language barrier was not a problem. We tried to communicate with boys via translator and it worked. We still remember all these evenings when we had fun with them, we laughed a lot and just relaxed. Their mum was helpful for everyone. She was goodie. The grandmother wanted to talk with us in Italian language but unfortunately we didn’t understand anything. Despite this communication breakdown, Nonna always gave us a smile.
All the family members were really good people who can inspire others one way or another. They showed us how to deal with many problems and be patient at the same time, share with others, live in a big community and be outgoing. We think that we made a good choice coming to their house!

Some practical information

We lived in a big house in Passirano, the public transport was rather good. We travelled by train or used the bikes. Most of the time we helped their family in Cellatica where there is the house they are moving in. The work was rather easy, we didn’t need any specific qualifications. We did lots of painting there.
We had no problem to decide about our work time so we had lots of time for travelling. Hedwige and her husband helped us many times with organising our trips, picking us up from the train station or buying tickets for the bus.
Hedwige and Soad (the woman from Marroco) prepared for us very tasty meals. It was italian and
arabic cuisine. If somebody likes italian cuisine, it’s a perfect place for him.

Summary

To sum up, we have to thank Hedwige, Maurizio, Elia, Nonna, Soad, Osama, Billel and all the people we met in Passirano for that 10 days. It was our first workaway experience but because of you, probably it won’t be our last experience. We wanted to apologise for all the things we did wrong and we hope to be better guests next time. We come away with sadness but we still have lots of good memories and beautiful pictures of you. Hope to see you again!

Hedwige is a very active woman who always has something to do, even though she is busy she can always find time to serve others and gives love and attention to you. She takes care of everyone in the house, she is good at being "the boss" making sure everything is being done while you are still happy. Her English is great and she is always finding opportunities to improve it. Very lovely young lady.

Her husband is just one of the nicest and loving guys I have ever met, always a sweet word to say, the peace maker, calm and very friendly. His English isn't great but he is easy to talk to and understand what he wants to say even without words being said. His son, the young teenager is a wonderful boy, very talented and sweet. He is hard to talk to most of the time, because he is a little bit shy but if you try hard you can get to know him and see how great he is. Wonderful piano player. His other brother, the ones who studies astronomy is very sweet too, he usually comes home for the weekend. The first day we arrived he showed us the moon in his incredibly huge telescope, which was a wonderful experience.

The grandma is the best, so cute and talkative 87 years old lady. She will tell you her whole life story on your first day. I miss her a lot, you just gotta be very patient, listen to her and show her love, then you win her heart. ♥ Soad is a lovely young lady from Morroco, hard worker, who has 2 boys, a 5-yr-old and a 4-mo-old, they are so cute and loving. The 5 year old boy is my baby's best friend. We miss them.

The work isn't very hard if you enjoy gardening. We usually worked 4 to 5 hours a day in the morning from 8:30am till 12:30pm, and then helped out for a hour of two when it was close to dinner time. In the morning we often did yard work, mowing the lawn, pulling weeds in the vegetable garden, picking cherries, sweeping up outside, cleaning up the chicken's coop, doing clay work with Hedwige, who is a wonderful artist, etc. And helping with the meals.

We had all 4 weekends off for that month we spent there, which gave us time to go explore other places. The meals together were the best, very delicious, simple and healthy. Mostly vegetarian yummy meals, with homemade bread, amazing cheese and lots of pasta and salad from their garden. Always something fun going on during dinners. I miss that!

They are wonderful and you will surely have an unforgettable time with them all. Just enjoy every moment, try to get involved as much as possible, learn from their culture, and spend time with them even when you're not working because they are wonderful and it's such a joy to be with them. I miss you all and will never forget this month, thank you for everything!!
