We live in an old farmhouse (typical Apulian farmhouse), in beautiful countryside in Brindisi province. The local rural context and very attractive because it still retains the typical dry stone walls, the typical rural architecture, with vaulted star-shape, free grazing animals, ancient olive trees, etc ... I (Antonio) I am 60 years old, and live with my mother who is 90 years old and is still self-sufficient. The kitchen and Mediterranean and the products we use are organic, and for the most part are produced by us.
We farm organically and cultivate mainly olive trees and vegetables. The tasks relate to the care of the garden: weeding, sowing, planting and harvesting throughout the year; the management of the olive trees: pruning, cleaning, and collection. There are also jobs in the orchard, pruning, harvesting; as well as the maintenance of facilities.

Viviamo in un' antica masseria (tipica fattoria pugliese), in una splendida campagna nella provincia Brindisi. Il contesto rurale locale e molto suggestivo perché conserva ancora i tipici muretti a secco, l'architettura rurale tipica, con volte a forma di stella, animali liberi al pascolo, ulivi millenari, etc... Io (Antonio) ho 60 anni, vivo con mia madre che ha 90 anni ed é ancora autosufficiente. La cucina e mediterranea e i prodotti che usiamo sono biologici e per la maggior parte son prodotti da noi.
Facciamo agricoltura biologica e coltiviamo principalmente gli ulivi e gli ortaggi. I lavori riguardano la cura dell'orto: seminare, piantare e raccogliere tutto l'anno, la gestione dell'uliveto: potature, pulizia, raccolta. Ci son anche i lavori nel frutteto, di manutenzione delle strutture.

Those who have many skills are useful and necessary for living in the country. I have much experience in the garden- I have farmed organiclly 15 years and constructed dry stone walls four years. Animal management: we have chickens, guinea fowl, quails, turkeys, rabbits and two pigs that we raise for our own consumption and our economical benefit. I have great skills in mechanics, construction of steel structures and as well as other appropriate agricultural technologies.

Chi viene può toccare molte competenze utili e necessarie per vivere in campagna. Ho molta esperienza nell'orto, (son 15 anni che faccio agricoltura biologica), nella costruzione di strutture in pietra, nella costruzione di muri con pietra a secco, nella gestione degli animali (abbiamo galline, faraone, quaglie, tacchini, conigli) che alleviamo per autoconsumo e piccola economia famigliare. Ho molta abilita' nella meccanica, nella costruzione di strutture in ferro e nella costruzione di altre tecnologie appropriate agricole.

Antonio era molto flessibile per quanto riguarda l’orario di lavoro. Noi lavoravamo presto alla mattina e poi alla sera, finché il sole sia… read more tramontato, per poter evitare le ore piu’ calde. Questa flessibilita’ si estendeva anche ad altri territori, per esempio, decidevamo noi quando smettere di lavorare. Si poteva facilmente perdere la cognizione del tempo.
Siccome mangiavamo soprattutto quello che era prodotto dalla proprieta’, tutti gli ingredienti erano buonissimi. Mangiavamo frutte e verdure fresche e di stagione: pomodori, cetrioli, angurie, pere e molte erbe fresche. Antonio e sua incredibile madre ci facevano vedere non solo delle ricette ma anche modi di insaporire is piatti semplici alla maniera autentica.
La casa e la proprieta’ e’ 5 chilometri dal paese piu’ vicino cosi’ non e’ facile fare dei giri se non hai la macchina. Antonio era tutto disposto a guidarci dappertutto nei dintorni, quando aveva il tempo. Era molto facile parlare con lui e su poteva fargli qualsiasi domanda. Aveva un’immensa pazienza verso il nostro italiano imperfetto. Era un’esperienza notevole per noi, per cui siamo molto grate.

My niece and I spent two weeks at Antonio’s cool, practical home. The volunteers had an entire floor with kitchen and bathroom. It was mid July so one can imagine the heat. Antonio was very flexible regarding the time of the day so we worked early in the morning, then some hours in the sunset. This flexibility extended to many other things, really, so when we felt like we had worked enough for the day, we had to decide to stop working otherwise it was easy to lose track of time.
Since we ate mostly produce of the propriety, all the ingredients were delicious. We also ate mostly fresh fruits and vegetables of the season: tomatoes, cucumbers, watermelons, pears and lots of fresh herbs. Antonio and his incredible mum taught us some recipes and ways of seasoning simple dishes in their authentic way.
The house and the farm is 5 kms from the next town but Antonio was keen to take us around whenever he could. He was easy to get along with and we could ask him any questions in our imperfect Italian. It was a remarkable experience and we’re very grateful for it.

We spent four intense weeks with Antonio and Gina. We were welcomed warmly and openly, but first had to create a little space for ourselves in the overflowing mess. Together with Theresia, who joined us from the second week, we were able to develop an unbelievable "drive": clearing, disposing of, cleaning the forecourt and lower apartment,… read more collecting plastic and clearing (Christoph removed thorn bushes the entire length of the street, so that a wonderful Dry stone wall could regain its status). Our highlight was the preparatory work in the olive garden and the olive harvest. We also made firewood and planted seedlings.
Antonio gave us a lot of space for our own initiative and was grateful for impulses. He was interested and open and let us share his thoughts and worldview. Due to the Covid situation, contact with Gina was unfortunately limited, but Renata and Theresia had nevertheless the chance to help cooking and baking a few times and look over Gina's shoulder. The second half of the stay was characterized by the "orange zone", so no excursions. All the more we enjoyed being outside - and the good conversations while cooking and eating in the Workawayer apartment. Un unforgetable experience, thank you all.

Wir verbrachten vier intensive Wochen bei Antonio und Gina. Wir wurden herzlich und offen empfangen, mussten uns im übervollen Durcheinander aber erst etwas Platz verschaffen und gestalten. Zusammen mit Theresia, die ab der zweiten Woche dazukam, konnten wir einen unglaublichen "Drive" entwickeln: beim Räumen, Entsorgen, Putzen von Vorplatz und unterer Wohnung, beim Plastik einsammeln und beim Roden (Christoph hat die ganze Strassenlänge Dornengestrüpp entfernt und damit einer wunderschönen Trockensteinmauer zu neuer Geltung verholfen). Unser Highlight waren dann die Vorbereitungsarbeiten im Olivengarten und die Olivenernte. Zudem haben wir Brennholz gemacht und Setzlinge gepflanzt.
Antonio liess uns sehr viel Raum für Eigeninitiative und war dankbar für Impulse. Er war interessiert und offen und liess uns an seinen Gedanken und seiner Weltsicht teilhaben. Der Kontakt zu Gina war aufgrund der Covid-Situation leider nur eingeschränkt möglich, dennoch konnten Renata und Theresia einige Male beim Kochen und Backen mitwirken und Gina über die Schulter schauen. Die zweite Hälfte des Aufenthalts war von "oranger Zone" geprägt, also keine Ausflüge. Umso mehr genossen wir das Draussensein und die guten Gespräche beim Kochen und Essen in der Workawayer-Wohnung. Ein unvergessliches Erlebnis, herzlichen Dank euch allen.

He learned about permaculture all by himself and you can really see how much he cares about the wellbeing of nature. It's a miracle how he manages to run all the farm by himself. Still we never felt any sense of stress, annoyment or negative energy. He is just the most comfortable person to be around with.
I don't even have words for his Gina - the way she prepares every single meal with such great love and patience... She is such a strong and powerful woman that clearly bears a lot of wisdom and also humor! I am in awe of her physical and cognitive health in that age! She even taught us some things in the kitchen - making pasta (orecchiette), baking bread, peeling prickly pears... The food always tasted so pure - we loved it! Olive oil, vinegar, honey, dried fruits...It's all from their garden and could not be more organic!
During our week it was time to prepare the olive fields for the harvest in november. We mainly cut the trees in shape, collected stones from the field and burned the wood. It was quite hard in the beginning but we quickly found the right techniques. Sometimes though, I have to admit, we felt a bit lost and would have wished to receive clearer instroctions. Maybe that was also due to the language barriere. We arrived only knowing a few italian words but surprisingly we found our way through with some knowledge in latin and french. That made the understanding part much easier than we expected. We quickly learned some useful farming-vocabs - so simple communication was easy and google translater helped us to ask more specific questions. Antonio talks slowly and mindfully so it was not too hard to follow.
All in all I can more than recommend staying with them. For us this week seemed timeless. We loved the routine of getting up early and ceasing the day. Ah and one little special feature: if you wake up in the morning you can see the sunrise right from your bed...

We are so greatful for the time! Miss you and see you again!

Antonio and his mother are very kind. They made me feel welcome and cooked some incredible food. I've never tasted such good salads, wine, olive oil, olives, bread and (...the list goes on) - all organic and fresh.
I couldn't speak Italian and they couldn't speak English but we made do with Google Translate.
