Hey! I’m Sophia, and I’m so excited to spend August in Italy, getting my hands dirty (literally) and learning as much as I can. I work as an accountant, which means I spend way too much time indoors, so I can’t wait to be outside, helping with gardening and home projects, and soaking up the sun.

I love connecting with people and being part of a welcoming home. I’m hoping to learn how to cook amazing Italian food, improve my Italian, and fully immerse myself in the local culture. I’m a hard worker and always up for an adventure, whether that’s fixing something around the house or picking fresh veggies from the garden. Mostly, I just want to feel like part of the family and experience real everyday life in Italy :)

I might not be a professional gardener or carpenter, but I’m hardworking, hands-on, and always excited to learn! I love being outdoors and am ready to pitch in wherever my help is needed. I’m no stranger to using tools and problem-solving on the fly, and I’m always happy to follow instructions or take initiative.

I’ve been Irish dancing for over 15 years and teach an adult class in Canada. If anyone’s up for learning a few steps, I’d love to share! Lately, I’ve gotten into photography after getting my first big-girl camera, so I’m always looking for interesting places and moments to capture. I also love being in the water, whether it’s a lake, ocean, or just a pool, and if there’s one nearby, I’ll probably be the first to jump in. Cooking and baking are a huge part of my life, especially trying new recipes and figuring out how to make something from scratch. But more than anything, I love spending time with people - sharing experiences, learning from each other, and just enjoying good company.

With our kids, she was more like a big sister than a babysitter – patient, playful, and always engaging with them in a fun way. I stayed with Francesco, Daniella, and their lovely family for 3 fantastic weeks in August. This was my first workaway experience and I was a little bit skeptical of the idea at first, but after my first call with Francesco I immediately felt at peace. Francesco is very knowledgeable and kind. He gave me tips on how to best navigate to various … read more cities and was very encouraging of my travelling around. You can tell he is quite passionate about people visiting here. Anytime I took a day trip somewhere, both Francesco and Daniella were quick to offer a drive to the train station or various places around the city. They were very helpful in helping me figure out the Italian train system and even bought me a train ticket once.
Francesco and Daniella are very hospitable and went out of their way to make me feel like I was part of the family. Daniella’s mother stayed at the house during my first week, and she was kind enough to teach me how to cook some recipes, including pasta al limone and traditional meatballs. Daniella and Nonna are great cooks and I loved each of the meals. They were kind enough to let me eat with them at meal times, which I loved. There was always great wine and conversation!
With the kids, I felt more like a big sister than anything, the work is not hard at all. I watched the kids alone maybe 3 or 4 times total, and never for longer than a couple hours. They’re not looking for a babysitter, they’re looking for a fun friend for the boys to hang out with and engage with in English. the boys love playing together with transformers, watching movies, and going swimming in the pool. Liam particularly likes to play outside with water or a ball. Ethan loves video games.
I also did some very minor cleaning, which was very infrequent. I was doing some online courses during my stay and I never had trouble juggling school and what was required of me around the house.
Mike (the dog) is such a firecracker, and very attention hungry. He gets jealous of the boys and will sometimes eat their toys as a form of revolting which I thought was pretty funny. He’s very mild tempered and is great with the kids. He’s a very social dog and wants to meet every dog on the street, and he can pull pretty hard on the leash if there is a friend to meet or a fun smell on the ground. It is best to walk mike in the mornings and at night as the days can be quite hot in the summer and he has a lot of fur. Every morning he waits for you at the stairs, ready to go on his walk. I would take Mike for a 30 minute walk around 8am and 8pm, which was a great way to explore the area the family lives. Mike is quite excited when he first goes on a walk, but he tires quickly. So he might pull during the first 5 minutes or so, but after you get that initial energy out of him you’ll find that his walking etiquette is actually quite well trained for such a young dog.
The family took me to a private beach multiple times, always offering to include me in their plans. They lent me beach shoes, a beach towel, and a beach bag as I packed quite lightly.
I was able to do multiple day trips, including San Marino and Ravenna. Forlì is a great city too, and I loved exploring the city center, studying at the university, and of course trying all of the local cusine.
I have very fond memories of going out to the local parks and getting to meet some of the family’s friends, and even another workawayer who was staying with one of said families. Daniella and Francesco took me to so many great spots that I never would have found on my own - my favourite being the main park in forli, which is filled to the brim with wild bunnies!
My parents came to Italy after my workaway finished, and we spent a day in Forlì before heading out to Florence. I was suprised by all the things I had learnt about the city during my three weeks! I felt like a local showing them around the city center.
This experience was just what I needed, a change of pace from my usual daily life and an opportunity to connect with others. Thank you Francesco and Daniella and I hope to visit again!
