My name is Shafi Islam (first name Mohammed, Middle Name Shafi) and I've always gone by Shafi because my twin brother has the same first name as me. I am super excited to travel to another country to provide service because I love exploring and learning about new cultures and customs! I enjoy meeting new people, animals, crocheting, crafting, rock climbing, swimming (in shallow water), and playing board games!

I looooove learning languages! I took Spanish in middle school and loved it, even though I thought it was difficult, and took Chinese for 4 years in high school and 4 more years in college (I ended up majoring in Chinese Language and Culture at university). If there's anyway I can learn a new language or strengthen the ones I already know, that would be fantastic!

I have tons of applicable experience! I've worked at a library as a library page filing and organizing books, volunteered at local schools to grade papers, volunteered at my local animal shelters to walk, feed and take care of friendly to mildly aggressive doggos, and worked at several summer camps across New York City (my home town). I've worked with a wide range of people and worked for a wide range of communities. I love teamwork and working with others and serving the community! I'd love to help anyway I can! :D

ESP: Solo estuve con Nazareth y Rodrigo una semana, ¡pero fue mi mejor semana en Colombia hasta ahora! Hicimos muchas cosas juntos en su propiedad: ayudamos a pintar casas, organizar habitaciones, preparamos platos juntos, despejamos caminos para más senderos, plantamos plantas, etc. También tuvimos muchísimo tiempo libre para relajarnos y… read more disfrutar de la compañía mutua. Rodrigo y Nazareth fueron increíblemente amables, lo que hizo que la experiencia fuera muy relajante y tranquila.

El terreno en sí era bastante hermoso, y los alojamientos estaban bien decorados y eran cómodos. Las dos habitaciones tienen un mosquitero cada una, pero creo que Rodrigo y Nazareth estarían encantados de instalar más si los que tienen mosquiteros están ocupados. Definitivamente, traigan repelente de insectos porque hay muchos insectos por ahí. Solo había duchas frías durante nuestra estancia, pero trabajar al aire libre te hace sudar, así que resultó ser bastante refrescante. ¡El internet es rapidísimo y las mascotas que tienen son súper amigables!

Lo que me cautivó de inmediato fue la amabilidad, la hospitalidad y la atención de Rodrigo y Nazareth. Rodrigo es increíblemente competente, ¡y hay muchísimo que aprender de él! Me divertí muchísimo aprendiendo de él y charlando con él; ¡es divertidísimo! Aunque hubo una pequeña barrera idiomática con Nazareth, su aura cálida y cariñosa emanó más allá de las barreras lingüísticas, y pudimos conectar muy bien. Hemos tenido muchas conversaciones enriquecedoras, ¡y Nazareth ha sido tan amable, divertida y cariñosa todo el tiempo! Me sentí muy bien apoyada y bienvenida aquí. Sin duda, lo voy a extrañar y recomiendo a todos que vengan a visitarnos.

ENG: I was only with Nazareth and Rodrigo for a week, but it was my best week in Colombia thus far! We've done many things on their property together: helped to paint houses, organize rooms, made dishes together, cleared paths for more trails, planted plants, etc. We also had tons of free time to relax and enjoy each other's company. Rodrigo and Nazareth were incredibly accommodating, which made the experience very relaxing and calming.

The land itself was quite beautiful, and the accommodations were well decorated and comfortable. The two rooms have one mosquito net each, but I think Rodrigo and Nazareth would be more than happy to install more if the ones with the mosquito nets are taken. Definitely bring bug spray because there are a good chunk of bugs around. There were only cold showers during our stay, but working outside makes you break out in a sweat, so it ended up being quite refreshing. The internet is super fast, and the pets they have are super friendly!

What won me over right away was how kind, welcoming, and nurturing Rodrigo and Nazareth were! Rodrigo is incredibly knowledgeable, and there's a ton to learn from him! I had tons of fun learning from him and chatting with him; he's a ton of fun! Even though there was a bit of a language barrier with Nazareth, her warm and caring aura emanated beyond language barriers, and we were able to bond well. We've had many enlightening conversations together, and Nazareth has been so kind, funny, and caring the entire time! I felt very well supported and welcomed here. I'm definitely going to miss it here and recommend that anyone and everyone come to visit!
