Hi there!

My name is Rebekah, but I prefer to go by my nickname Becky. I'm from South Africa but hold a German passport, however I do not yet speak German as English is my native language. I'm currently on an exchange year from Stellenbosch University to HTW Dresden University for Mechanical Engineering. My goal is to explore as much of Europe as possible during the times between class and work whilst having many great and memorable adventures.

I love anything adventurous - from surfing and scuba diving (I have my PADI open water diving license) to hiking, rock climbing and wishing I had paragliding gear to jump off the mountain with. I'm a Mechanical Engineering Student and have already completed the first 3 years of my course in South Africa. I am very practical, level-headed but also have the mathematical skills and theoretical knowledge and understanding of my engineering field. I love metal work and hope to someday learn the trade. I'm also interested in sustainability and have gained some experience in this through previous Work Away experiences and wish to learn more on this.

I have grown up in a large family of 7 and am the second eldest of my 4 siblings. I am used to a chaotic house and am good at sharing homes with many people. I have always been a tomboy and often fulfilled the 'masculine' roles in the house, which in short meant I did most of the house maintenance, gardening and electrical fixing... As well as cleaning. So I am already well trained to help you!

After finishing high school, I went solo backpacking in Europe for a year during the second year of Covid. I went to many countries (as you can see in my travel history) and did various work from au pairing to house and dog sitting to olive picking and mechanics. I loved all the different people, cultures and languages I got to experience during my year backpacking and am excited for new adventures. I travel as a vegetarian, but I am not strict and happy make my own meals where necessary. I am a good mix of being independent in my own space, and while I enjoy people and am good company I am also very happy in my own space

In general, I love all things hands-on and outdoors. I am a hard worker and enjoy physical work/labor (no need to gym and work then!). I would love to learn more about building, sustainability, gardening, metal and wood craft and any other cool things.

Que habilidades tienes?

I have software skills for various coding languages as well as 3D modeling of machines. I am skilled in calculations and technical drawings for buildings or machines. I have a little bit of arc welding and mechanical experience, so I am comfortable doing such tasks but am not yet skilled in them and might need a bit of guidance. I am, however, a quick learner and am deeply interested in anything hands-on. I have some experience with gardening and building from previous work away experiences and am familiar with building sites as my father is a structural engineer.

I love card games and learning new ones. I am a big adventurer with specific experience and knowledge in hiking and rock climbing.

I have a South African driver's license and have been driving for a few years. I do not, however, have an international license as I am not comfortable driving in Europe.
