Hi I’m Lucie and I'm on month 5/9 of my Big Canadian Adventure!

In December 2022 I moved to Kenya and spent 5 magical months living in Mombasa. I was surrounded by an incredibly diverse mix of cultures, languages and people and loved every moment- so decided to keep going!

I then spent a month in remote Bulgaria having the most incredible time at an eco-homestead. I returned to the UK, got my IEC visa and set off for Vancouver in November 2023 😁

I spent 3 months on the beautiful Gabriola island and am now back in the Greater Vancouver area looking for my next host.

After spending the better part of a decade living and working in cities, I’m looking to learn about living slowly, sustainably & sensationally!

With every trip I take, my goal is to really get a taste of what a day in the life is like as a local. To truly understand the culture, the importance and the beauty of their home through your eyes.

I am independent, hard working and always looking for an opportunity to learn new skills. I love to cook and have experience in cooking vegan/vegetarian as well as fish & meat.

I grew up around animals and love working with them- I owned my own horse and have had dogs from as far back as I can remember- from reactive Great Danes to devoted Labradors. I also used to raise rescue hens and desperately miss doing so as sadly London doesn’t accommodate!

I have nannied on/off over my life and love being with kids. I also have experience working with the elderly and people that speak another language/having to teach or build conversation in English. I’m very interpersonal and compassionate towards others which is why I enjoy working with people and animals as much as I do.

I’m a true creative who loves to do crafts, dance and most importantly write (the latter being the one subject I can confidently speak on!) I also love music- my singing hasn’t made TOO many people deaf either ;) Practically speaking, I have experience in copywriting, videography, editing, photography and creative direction for events.

I’ve worked many customer/client-facing roles and love getting to interact with so many different types of people. Practically speaking I’ve worked in catering, retail, tourism and the food industry.

God, what to say about my magical time spent in Rebrevtsi?! Obviously a lot because it's taken me so long to reply...!!

Pierre has built a wonderful home and fosters the kind of atmosphere one can only hope to enter into as a Workawayer - truly kind, very welcoming (even for Brits!!) and even after a days work, always up for a good time :) Pierre… read more and I may have been chalk and cheese at the start but by the end of my month I felt like we really saw eye to eye :D He is genuine, open minded, passionate, UBER nice, and has very good music taste - just don't play the remastered versions ;) I loved hearing about how Pierre had come to create such a haven in the middle of Bulgaria and you can really see the love, time and effort he has put into the place. We had some great laughter & conversations sat around the dinner table which will be hard to forget :)

Speaking of dinner- the food was excellent! Both Pierre and Kalle were super accommodating for a veggie and there's so much delicious home grown food you really are spoilt for choice. I was lucky enough to experience tent life for one week before the storms sadly forced us inside, but Pierre was quick to make sure we were comfy wherever. If you can, I highly recommend a sleepover in the saloon as well! Especially after a few Rakias...

Our daily routines varied and kept things interesting- between scything, wood chopping, weeding and much more there was always something new to learn. It was also great hearing Pierre and Kalle perform - they are both very talented musicians and I'm only sad I missed out on the debut of their band!! I hope someone is able to make them matching outfits very soon, I'm sure it will only enhance their performance!! ;) Pierre even very kindly helped me make a wooden chopping board as a gift for my father from scratch and was very patient when teaching me how to perfect each part! I'm pleased to say the gift was a roaring success :D

So to sum up, I couldn't have asked for a better first host for a workaway. If you want to go somewhere to learn the art of being present, patient and purposeful, look no further. I feel really lucky to have met the 'gang' - they are all incredible people with rich back stories and fascinating lives and I hope to return to them (plus some new four legged friends!!) soon.
