Hi there! My name's Fin and I’m from Norwich in the UK. I am an aspiring writer currently on the lookout for the kind of inspiration and experiences that I feel Workaway can provide. Between covid restrictions, working my day job, and completing my university degree, this upcoming season will be the first time in a few years that I have been able to travel extensively, although I did spend a few weeks in Ireland last year, and have spent time interrailing in Europe in the past. I’m keen to get out of the city and closer to nature and those wide-open horizons that can be so hard to find here at home. From late May to mid-June 2024, I will taking part in a camping tour of several National Parks in Utah, Nevada, and California, eventually ending in San Francisco. Following this I will be keen to embark on new and meaningful opportunities, discover fresh perspectives, meet new people, and see new places. I’m easy going and conscientious, self-motivated, and willing, with several years’ work experience, both independently and as part of a team, and in roles that have demanded physical as well as clerical work. I also have experience working on a farm, including mucking and weeding, and have some experience working with horses. In my free time I enjoy creative pursuits and am a keen reader. I love to be outdoors and hope to get more seriously into hiking and bushcraft. Equally, I am very much at home relaxing and socialising with others, whether that’s just a chilled afternoon or out and about enjoying a drink. I am excited to get started and to make the most of the time we’ll spend together. For now, wishing you all the best and hoping to hear back from you soon!

I would be very interested in learning a foreign language. I currently only speak English, although I am trying to teach myself German. I would also be interersted in learning Spanish. Although I have no experience in teaching English, I would be potentially interested in giving it a go. I have recently completed a degree in English Literature and Creative Writing for which I was awarded first class honours, so feel confident that I at least have the knowledge, if not currently the experience.

While studying my degree I have worked for a number of years in the goods office of my university science department. My duties include the secure storage of deliveries and the maintenance of records and communications. These deliveries can range from stationary to dangerous chemicals to scientific equipment worth many thousands of pounds. I provide face-to-face customer service, as well as over the phone and via email, and frequently raise orders on the behalf of others including of solvents and gasses. I have experience with basic warehouse equipment such as sack barrows and pallet trucks, and have completed training courses on manual handling, data protection, counter terrorism, and fire and chemical safety. I work both as part of a small team and independently, often manning the office on my own a couple of days a week, as well as being trusted to close and lock up at the end of each day.

I have previously worked clerical roles in a medical centre where there has been an especially strict emphasis on confidentiality and time management with no room for error.

I have recently completed a degree in English Literature and Creative Writing for which I graduated with first class honours. While my focus remains primarily on fiction, I have a proven high standard of written English and communication.

I have volunteered at a number of locations through Workaway where I have developed the following skills:
Wexford, Ireland (2023) - farmstay; duties included housework, cleaning, mucking out stables, weeding, bailing hay, brushing and tending to horses.
Santa Cruz Mountains, CA (2024) - hobby farm and campground; duties included looking after goats and chickens, cleaning out animal pens, maintaining camp sites and cabins, cooking, weeding, collecting firewood, providing assistance to campers.
Little Belt Mountains, MT (2024) - helping to build an artist's retreat; duties included milling logs, collecting lumber, construction (mostly cordwood), mixing mortar, art projects, cooking, housework, laying foundations.
Seattle, WA (2024) - urban farm; duties included house and garden work, weeding, looking after chickens, cooking, event organising.
Peshastin, WA (2024) - allotment garden; duties included house and garden work, weeding , looking after chickens.

Outside of work and study, I have some experience planting and tending in a shared allotment, where I have helped grow potatoes and rhubarb. I also have experience house painting. Last year while in Ireland I worked on a farm, and my duties included weeding, fence making, the mucking out of stables and general housework – cleaning, waxing, looking after house pets, etc. During this time, I was working in close proximity with horses and was able to interact calmly and responsibly with them while often sharing the same pen as I worked.

In my free time I run an Instagram account where I share art and photography with a particular emphasis on folklore and fantasy. At the time of writing it has gained over 76,000 followers. I also curate themed playlists on Spotify, the most popular of which has 4,500 followers and have in the past been contacted by artists and record labels asking to be included. From 2017-2020 I was selected to be one of around 30 moderators for an online music discussion group populated by around 50,000 members. Among my duties were ensuring the rules of the group were being followed – and conversely dealing with members of the group who were not – addressing complaints and disputes, as well as helping organise group activities such as “Album of the Week”.

I would be very interested in using my free time to explore and get better acquainted with the wider area I'm in. This could be through trips and outings or just freely wandering. I would also hope to be able to use some of my free time for writing.

I enjoy board games and card games in my down time. A game I haven't played in a long time but would like to get back into is chess. Similarly, I would be interested in taking up tennis or badminton, which I have not played in a long time but have enjoyed in the past. I am a runner and try to exercise regularly. I would also be interested in any opportunities for swimming.

While not really much of a photographer, I do enjoy taking photos and feel that this would be the perfect opportunity to develop it into more of a hobby.
