Descripción
Hello! My name is Emma Harlow, and I am a 25 year old theatre artist based in New York City.
About my life as an artist:
I spend most of my time writing music for fringe theatre here in the city with my best friend/writing partner. Though we mostly self-produce 40 minute musicals in the basements of bars or in community gardens, we recently worked with Susan Sarandon on our show THE OYSTER RADIO HOUR at Little Island. Ironically, I work at an oyster bar on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, and I now know way more about bi-valves then I ever wanted. Serving oysters on ice trays to broadway actors who often ask me "what do you really do?" - I have to say: I really do serve oysters on ice trays, and I also really do make lots of theatre.
My music is largely inspired by old time, blue grass, and western folk, and my work is driven by fantasy, american folk-lore, and ghosts.
When I'm not writing music for our shows, I'm creating shadow puppets, painting sets, and building props. And when I'm not working in theatre (or serving oysters) I work as a freelance artist - most recently I had the privilege to do some live graphic note-taking for the California SuperIntendents Art Conference at Disneyland!
About me:
I grew up in Northern California, the youngest of four and the daughter of two artist/missionaries. From a young age making things beautiful and doing things right has been the number one rule of my life. Growing up in a big family, with parents in missionary work - I had to be extremely resourceful and adaptable. Which is where I think my love of traveling came from! I've done a decent amount of traveling for a 25 year old, some highlights being:
- spending a summer working in remote Alaska when I was 17
- working at Edinburgh Fringe in 2024
- Cross country road trips from Sacramento to Seattle, and from Reno to Kansas City
Then of course I moved out to New York City when I was 21 years old!
I am extremely spunky, I love a new challenge, I love to meet new people. After working in fine dining on the Upper West Side - there is no person of amount of hard work that scares me: its all a part of the journey.
Some quick facts to wrap up this section - I have a ceramic lighthouse collection, I share a birthday with Rainn Wilson, I really do believe in ghosts.
