Descripción
Hi there my name is Claire, I am travelling across the United States this year and looking to gain experience farming, homesteading, and taking care of animals.
I have always dreamed of centering my livelihood around farming and growing food from plants, whether that's part of an organization or starting it myself.
I am very passionate about interrupting the waste stream and finding ways to make use of resources that already exist. Closed loop systems, reduce, reuse, recycle, all these principles are important to me - but I gravitate most towards reuse and repurposing things. I like to be inventive with the ways we can reuse waste or recover waste into something useful.
I love to be outside, to lovingly take care of plants and see them grow, to steward land and see it thrive with native species and healthy ecosystems.
I'm a pretty flexible person, I like to be useful and work with my hands (and my brain lol), I love to cook and enjoy good food! -

Que habilidades tienes?
As far as farming goes, I have done a couple of intensive workshops to learn about regenerative agriculture, permaculture, and organic farming practices for the midwest region (Ohio). I spent a couple weeks at a homestead and learned about cover cropping, pest management, mycorrhizal fungi and soil health, composting, biochar, biological principles, water sourcing and retention, etc. All the basics. We also got to see a more holistic view of farming like off-grid living, solar power, saltwater batteries, sterling engines, milling grains, tree identification, native species protection, etc.
I also took a farm practical class one semester of college where we covered more 'traditional' agriculture topics like seed spacing, germination rate, companion planting, plant growth stages, greenhouse functionality, soil surveying, how to use basic farm equipment like broadforks, two wheel tractors, seed spacers, and hoop houses.
I'm drawn to gardens wherever I go. I've spent most summers volunteering at community gardens wherever I live. I have always kept a garden at home and usually try to experiment with new plants or growing conditions every year. This year I grew a long storage variety of tomatoes and tested to see how long they would last, as well as grew blue dent corn to incorporate a more calorie dense food to my garden.
Besides all this I have a Master's degree in welding engineering so I know quite a bit about metals. I focused more on the metallurgy side of things than the engineering side. Right now I formulate metal alloys (mostly steel alloys), and its really fascinating stuff. But I know some welding basics and some engineering basics. -
