Seeking to spend some time in Italy over the course of the next year, possibly as early as December 2024, into 2025.

Ciao & Hello! I grew up in the Pacific Northwest. I am a traveler to places near and far :)
I currently live in Neah Bay, WA (the northwestern-most point in the lower 48 states) where I manage a small seaside inn. I lived in San Francisco for about a year and in Upstate New York for almost five years while I attended university, but I grew up in WA state. I traveled a lot before then and continue / love to travel near and far.

I am an artist and traveling inspires me to create. I would love to work on a mural or help with any design pieces, any creative projects - OR to have the time and space to work on my own creative projects while helping you in another way. I enjoy wandering and exploring. I delight in meeting new people and exchanging ideas. I practice yoga and like walking and hiking (walked 200+ miles of the Camino de Santiago in October 2017). I like to cook - I love experimenting in the kitchen with whatever is on hand (and most things usually turn out pretty well!). I love to learn about and try new food, local food. I can offer help with these skills and passions, as well as help in the garden and house, doing domestic work.

I am always interested in learning new skills (especially in carpentry/plumbing/"handy-man" work, etc). I love the sea and I would love to learn more about life on the water and about boats. I also have a lot of customer service experience and experience doing cleaning/daily tasks and maintenance at B&Bs/hostels (my regular job + through HelpX&WorkAway).

English is my mother-tongue. I studied Italian in school - reading, writing and listening are better than my spoken Italian. I want to improve my Italian especially in daily conversation. Given that I have some foundational knowledge of Italian, other Romance languages interest me as well and I have some comprehension of them.

As I mentioned, I enjoy meeting new people, learning more about places & cultures, exchanging ideas and acquiring new skills.

I can drive a stick / manual and am comfortable driving in other countries (some!).

I take direction well but am also good at figuring things out on my own/taking initiative, and enjoy working collaboratively too - depends on the setting! I don’t mind being alone, and am responsible to look after anything (your home, pet, garden) if you are away. Although I'd describe myself as laid-back (not lazy or passive) and observant I think those traits also make me an good and eager learner, and one who is determined and hard-working (whether alone or working in a collaborative environment). I'd love to offer anything and everything I can :)

EXPERIENCE via HELPX & WORKAWAY:
I have stayed with hosts through HelpX with my cousin and a year later with my friend. My cousin and I stayed with a lovely French couple and helped them around the house, in the garden, and in the art studio.
My friend and I traveled for nearly 10 months working with hosts through HelpX - in Ireland, Portugal, Italy, and England. We worked on many projects again in the garden, preparing the olive groves for harvest, working at a vineyard, around the house, caring for children, hosting and housekeeping at a bed&breakfast, renovating apartments and rooms in a bed& breakfast, building a pooldeck, and more.
I have studied in Italy and traveled alone as well. I have traveled alone to many countries and places near and fair.
I did work away in San Francisco in a hostel 3 years ago.
I did workaway in southern Italy at a home about 5 years ago and Just recently revisited them! Now I have stayed with them 3 times.

Carolyn and Sophie are very very kind, We have them laisseer our house hanging a few days with no problem at all, they made the wanted work and welcomed us in our return with excellent one meal and a lot of enjoyment. They worked well, amused well us. We liked a lot their passage.

Carolyn and Joshua stayed and worked with us for two and a half weeks in the spring of 2011, they worked on a wide variety of tasks for us mainly preparing the house for the summer lets but several other building tasks as well. Both were friendly polite, resourceful and confident no matter what we asked then to turn their hand to they were always willing and had a go at learning new skills, not one complaint in the whole time despite the searing heat and some boring jobs. I think we must have hit lucky because it is hard to imagine how we could have had two more committed, hardworking or delightful characters. As well as this general reference we would be happy to provide specific information on their time with us if anyone should require it. Thanks very much Carolyn and Joshua and hope you have further successful experiences, if you want to come back next year you know you are very welcome.

Carolyn and Joshua stayed with me for over 6 weeks since beginning of May 2011. A very busy period as I live in the middle of country woodlands and olive groves. Josh spent endless hours cutting grass/weeds, clearing the Olive Grove ( it never looked so good!) He did an amazing job redecking the pool surround, working with real comittment and a sense of perfection. He was never to be rushed - something I sadly have become accustomed to as there is always so much to do and never enough time. The pool surround is now safe again and thanks to Carolyn's endless endeavour to varnish the meters and meters of planks to look old, match the rest and to be waterproof.
Carolyn tended to the watering and vegi gardens. She surrounded beds with wooden planks to hold earth and water in - she made many steps ( my land is terraced and my legs are getting tired!) and in general was always helpful trying to make my life easier!
They worked together restoring the wooden ceiling under the
balcony making it a real team job.
Unfortunately as I love cooking Joshua did not get much of a chance but they always helped with household jobs and my kitchen has deteriorated since they left!
I recommend them both to anybody who wants to experience the helpX philosophy and to enjoy meeting positive,pleasant young people from other parts of the world.
Should they come this way again - I have already booked them for another spell and before I forget Josh is the best bug exterminator I have come across!

Carolyn & Joshua stayed with us for March and into early April. They were our first helpers this year and they were definitely a good start to the season. They are nice, honest people who work hard and like to learn something new whenever possible. They redecorated a very large bedroom for us; there was a lot of sanding and stripping and painting and they did a great job. They did a lot of clearing and tidying up outside and helped also in the hostel with cleaning etc. They are very self-sufficient and don't need a lot of supervision or direction once you explain what you want..which we liked! I would highly recommend Carolyn and Joshua and hopefully we'll see them back here again soon...You are welcome anytime guys! Best of luck in Italy...

they were a great help to me during there stay,hard workers and easy to get along with, they also kept me entertained while they were around,Carolyn is a very talented girl a painter and a poet, hold on to that one Joshua! they are hard to find :) your always welcome back guys!

just thought I should update our reference for Carolyn and Joshua - they have just left us to head north and after a total of 3 weeks. Originally the plan had been an open stay but it was not a surprise to us when they were tempted with the wonders of Ireland and other hosts to explore some more!
All what was said in the above reference still stands. They are a lovely couple and keen to help. The only extra comment I might have for another host is that it became clear as the days wore on the Carolyn and Joshua really liked the idea of a project to get their hands into and complete before they left us - we are normally fairly relaxed when it comes to task lists so it was good for us to choose something that the guys could get their teeth into - this was in the line of painting my daughters bedroom and that involved all the lugging out of furniture, prep work and painting of wood pannelling and stone walls - it is a job I would certainly run from and it is with great pleasure that I can say not only did the guys get the job done in minimum time, but did so in good humour and with a professional eye. Thanks again guys, keep in touch and enjoy all what our green isle has to offer. x

Carolyn and Joshua have been with us for just over a week and I am happy to post a reference for them as they seek/talk to other hosts here in Ireland and/or abroad.
Their stay with us in open ended and as we have a casual approach to help-xing, to date we have had a nice mix of work and social time with this young and keen couple.
Joshua is multi-skilled whose work so far with us has been paced and thorough to date involving mainly lugging/manual work, and cooking (he has totally embraced the European concept of Slow Food www.slowfoodireland.com ) Carolyn has had the somtimes challenging task of minding my 3 year old while double tasking fullfilling domestic duties. As my brother has been sick in hospital recently, it has been a welcome relief to know, and trust, that Carolyn and Joshua have been there to call on for even just house/baby/dog sitting as we deal with hospital runs to Cork.
They both are pleasant, happy to engage in both light and deep conversations and still retain a good sense of humour throughout.
This reference will be updated naturally as their time comes to a close but in the mean time should anyone wish to contact me directly for more feedback please feel free to do so.
