Hi my name is Alex, I am 24 years old and originally from Germany.

I'm very passionate about the outdoors, filmmaking, photography, art, and music and I love traveling, learning new things, and meeting new people.

The things that make me most happy are my friends and family as well as making art, exploring new places and making unforgettable memories with other people. Personally, I feel like nothing beats the feeling of spending long summer nights with your friends, hiking through beautiful places, or going on adventures with people that you just met.

Gardening
My grandparents have a huge garden where I help out every week. I know how to use a lawnmower, jigsaw, hedge trimmer, motor saw, or hack saw. I can also cut and stack firewood, plant flowers/vegetables/etc. or do things like weeding or sweeping. I don't mind getting my hands or clothes dirty, and working outside makes me happy.

Forestry & controlled burns
During a previous workaway opportunity, I learned which trees can/should be cut down and how to do that. I also learned about controlled burns in the forest and participated in a few of them (both small and bigger ones with the local fire department).

Basic carpentry & building
I have knowledge in building basic things from wood and metal. For example, I built garden beds, shelves, doors, and well lids before. I honestly love building things and am always down to learn new things in this field.

Housekeeping
I live mostly by myself so I am used to doing laundry, cleaning, cooking, and doing whatever is necessary around the house. I can also help out with wall painting (or even painting murals since I'm good at arts).

Other skills
I am a business student and have been working in the marketing department of an international company. If help should be needed, I can help with marketing, basic financial planning (with Excel), customer service, or even graphic design. I also know how to film and edit videos (I studied filmmaking for 4 months and produced 4 brand films), and I'm good at photography (mostly hobby photography but I've been hired for 2 weddings).

I'm open and motivated to learn new things and I'm always happy if I can help with my own skills. At first, I'm sometimes a bit shy but I love being around people and working in a team. I'm also very creative, adventurous, easy-going, and (from what my friends and coworkers have told me) fun to be around.

I also love playing Volleyball, so I'm always down for some practice or a friendly match.

I stayed with Toon on his beautiful rainforest property for 6 weeks and it was one of the most extraordinary and magical experiences I’ve ever had in my life. Toon is such a kind and honest soul and you can feel that in every hug and conversation you have with him. I appreciated how patient he was with explaining everything to me, no matter if it… read more was about how to use the work tools correctly, have a good posture while working or about the different types of plants in his garden and their properties. Toon is very knowledgeable about healthy foods, the ways our bodies work and living off of nature, and I’m really grateful for everything I learned from him.

Work was always something different and I loved how even weeding (or jungle weeding as I learned to call it) became a full body workout. It’s been a long time since I felt so good in my mind and body, thanks to all the work, good food, daily stretching, exploring the rainforest and the conversations Toon and I shared. Toon also gave me the chance to explore the rainforest on my own, hike in the creeks, learn some tips and tricks for bush camping, bow and throwing knife use, fire lighting skills, and much more.

And even if his tone can sometimes (but rarely) become a bit blunt when working on more challenging projects, just know that everything Toon says or does is meant with good intention to help you learn and grow. And once you learn how to work effectively with each other, it’s amazing to see how much work you can get done in only 4 hours a day (and look back on it proudly with a delicious afternoon smoothie in your hand). Most importantly though, know that the more you give and the more work and focus you put in, the more you get out of your experience with Toon. I promise you, every drop of sweat is a thousand times worth it.

I am so happy and grateful for my stay with Toon and if you have the time, I can wholeheartedly recommend to stay for a long time at his place. Not only did I learn a lot about myself and about working on a stronger mind and body, I also got more confident to take on new challenges (+ realizing that it’s sometimes better not a have a plan all the time and exchange control for freedom). I will carry the feelings, learnings and memories I had with Toon and in his forest forever in my heart and I am so so thankful for Toon for sharing his life, his knowledge and his stories with me. I can recommend volunteering at Toon’s place for everyone who’s up for an adventure and and new experiences, who wants to live in the moment without any “outside world” distractions, and who’s willing to put in some hard work. And in return, you will have and unforgettable time that I could never do justice by trying to put it into words - you just have to experience it yourself.
