Hi there, this is TianLi.
I grew up in a remote village in China. When I was born, people in my village pitied my parents——she wasn’t a boy. My mother answers “But she is a special gift.” My parents didn’t care about others’ “sarcasm”. They give me full of love and respect. When I was a kid, they always said to me “You are the best girl.” When I became an adult, they said to me “The love of parents is always around you. But you have the right to choose what you want to do and you also need the responsibility to take what you choose.“ During my early journey to the world, with parents’ love and expectation, I studied very hard and became the only one who comes from my village enters into the top-one University in China. I used my right to choose where I want to go. I’m not a special girl who was different than others. However, I consider myself very lucky to be born into a family where I get to love and respect.
After I finished my education, I did not jump into a career life right, because I felt that exploring my life in a multidimensional space and developing my aptitude for the understanding of this whole world are more meaningful at that time. Once I was immersed in a richer ecosystem, I began to appreciate my study as a living, breathing, holistic system rather than a collection of pieces of knowledge.
Since then, I have traveled, surveyed, researched, and taught, fulfilling my life’s dream to be a student whose “universities” are across the globe. I went from Tsing Hua University to the renowned Santa Fe Institute, from Cuba to Russia, from Italy to Sri Lanka, and from India back to remote villages in China. The perspectives and insights I gained by designing, developing, and conducting diverse levels of education, from elementary schools to colleges, have been tremendous. I went through overwhelming life changes, have come full circle, and have become very grateful to be surrounded by knowledge and creation wherever I go. I have come to believe that true knowledge and big discoveries come from personal experience acquainted with sensations that strengthen intuition and develop a more profound understanding of a phenomenon.
At the same time, I find my life mission to be a teacher whose goal is to understand and transfer the aims of education. If I was living in my village without an education, I would be a housewife who has one or two children. I’m fortunate that what I’m doing now is meaningful for me. I have walked across my fear: The fear wasn’t that I would be criticized. The fear was that I would live a life in which I would not be able to be independent, get an education, o be a teacher, or do anything I truly wanted.
Now, I'm in an international school in science in China, teaching G6-G8 science and art. I always enjoy traveling, teaching, and sharing.
