Hi we are the Carlucci's Dad,and these two amazing boys of mine, Sam and Tom. Sam is 14 and Tom 13 , both kids are very mature , knowledgeable and very used to both these workaway placements and this way of life , they are both able to help out and get involved , both cook chop wood , work on projects, both supervised and not , they are interested in it all , and happy to learn more , perhaps share some of their own knowledge too , they are interested in all aspects .as for me ive been everything from a widower to a poet in this interesting, adventurous life so far that started out with a social work role for the first 20 odd years before a big life change after a period of i tense growth. We began our latest new life in Scotland nine years ago when we moved to an isolated croft in the northeast of Scotland. We lived a semi self-sustaining lifestyle, building structures, recycling materials for new uses growing our food and helping our neighbours and home schooling our children. we all loved it, the only thing missing was sharing life with others , we enkoyed the wild up there and the snow there was qute a lot of it at times ! along with winds that regularly blew over 100mph , a lot of fun and quite a experience , but it was time foe new adventures .
we decided to go to portugal to join a small eco /permaculture farm in the south of portugal. We have been there until recently as long-term staff.
My roles were a mix of the usual tasks in this type of project, as well as these roles, we took on responsibility for building new structures, general maintenance of buildings, pathways and riverbanks, providing hospitality for the many eco tourist guests, cleaning, caring for the sites 5 children, catering for the large groups attending courses, At the time their mother provided the catering for a Recent Pdc of 22 people, while I acted in a course support role, advising on the practical aspects and how to approach this lifestyle with children, i was also very much involved in Building a straw and clay house. While there i /we also provided support for our guests, neighbours and those living at the farm. After a year of hard work, fun, lots learning and new experiences I /we decided after a great deal of thought that Portugal wasn't for us.( there was also an unfortunate incident involving a large tiger centipede that well nearly got me for good and meant a rushed departure for the alps and a good doctor was required ,( the centipede was fine by the way ) after this adventure we decided to move further north to look for new opportunities to meet people, learn and make new friends. Obviously travelling with our children is a little more difficult than alone, but as I /we had been doing this for years now Iam are very organised regarding the boys and have always been able to work efficiently and safely in all the roles required. we had began to settle there when brexit threw a spanner in the works so to speak and we dicided to call it a day and look towards a more settled life again n.
Update...since returning from the EU in September 2016 I have taken a live in job on a farm , main duties are to care for the various animals ..cows, ponies ,sheep pigs ,chickens, geese, peacocks, donkeys and alpacas orphan lambs and piglets, I also have responsibility for maintenance of the land ..hedges, tracks drainage fencing ,and have finally been able to learn and use heavy machinery ,tractors diggers etc etc, i also helped organise and set up a small forest type school here which the boys have attended ,this included negotiating with the landowners and teachers, me building a compost toilet ,timber and canvas structures, and generally ensuring that the school project was viable and that the basics were in place. although the farm is not organic / permaculture I have not worked with animals so closely and have found the experience both interesting and very satisfying. We are now in a position to look for ethical places to stay, work, learn and share .we are ideally looking for placements if a month or more at a time although we can be flexible regarding this and would welcome any contact from projects .June update, we have now settled in a quiet spot in CO Mayo as a stepping stone to putting down some roots close by others , and using our spare time to indulge our pleasure of traditional archery and what is now called Bushcraft, and for the time being will be getting involved with local projects and making use of the extra knowledge gained from our recent travel's.
An update on our recent activities since we were last on work away , what have for the last year or so been living full time in an off grid location in the west of Ireland, caring for approx 150 acres of mixed forest , being grown as a re foresting/wilding project , so along
with needing to grow our food, source our water supply and maintaining a safe water supply, make and maintain our own solar power system ,build our accommodation, teach our children we have been quite busy . It was quite an interesting time during the winter and it's endless storms but all was well . The forest and us survived and grow just fine . As to the lock down, well three months and counting so far and all is well , we have been honoured to share it with nature rather than our own species , it has been amazing .
Our two boys have grown and thrived beyond their years in this setting , their knowledge and thirst for more more more never ends and their love of nature only grows stronger . As a family we have found this to be quite a challenge , we were quite happy to be stewards of this forest but once the lock down came it all got very serious , I'm proud to say we rose the challenge , got very organised and all was well . The animals made us welcome once they knew us , the trees were cared for and protected , poachers were discouraged , drainage and fire prevention attended to and life moved very slowly.Along the way we occasionally got diverted into new things for example ,looked after a "neighbours goats , including milking that we,d never done before and extremely exciting made our first cheese, we also set up a group for parents wanting to do more with their children in nature , bushcraft , foraging
and wild walks, but mostly our current work kept us in the woods.

We were set up as a self contained unit and managed our roles without input from the owners , pretty much left to attend to the area and it's needs autonomously , luckily we have prior knowledge of woodland management , it's not the latest style of managing and little old fashioned but it works with little impact from machinery. Our spare time has been spent practising our hobby of traditional archery, foraging for new teas to try , making hedgerow medicines , reading , family poetry sessions, learning to know individual animals deer , pine Martins mainly , even made our own clothes detergent, worked so well were still using it, and generally trying to move at the speed dictated by this location .
June 2020 so we are now coming to the point where we would like to get back out there , see what others are doing , share learn and the joy working alongside folk again . Hope we still find the world as welcoming as this forest and it's habitats have been , time will tell I guess. We are obviously now settled in Ireland permanently and not making plans for trips abroad again , however we would be very interested in returning to mayo and exploring possibilities with hosts there . we spent our first 6 months in Ireland up in mayo and it would be good to return to the area . We are despite being isolated in the woods very aware of the virus and it's implications, we have given much thought to how we and hosts can adapt including measures we feel would offer additional safety and would be very happy to share and discuss this with any potential hosts in detail. obviously Iam now a single , home educating , eco concious dad of two , but very organised practical and blessed with two very capable helpful and quite knowledable lads, who are mature beyond their years so we feel little has changed and we can offer the same level of commitment to any potential project as we have before , as to accommodation we have lived long term in everythingfrom regular houses , cob round houses ive built , to tipis and yurts, even a cabin or two, ive built when taking on long term projects in some very wild and interesting places , in all sorts of temperatures and landscapes, so the type of accommodationis no problem.I am currently working as an independant councellor and coach while planning the next step on this journey ooking for longer term hosts in the Dublin area while we wait on a long distance ,long term relocation later in the year as it seems our travels will lead us much further away in the near future.
Please feel free to make contact and ask questions, hear more of our plans and next steps , perhaps we can be of assistance to each other.
we are now finally after quite a journey I'm the South of India, the area around Pondicherry and seeking a role and host.
Thank you for reading this and take care
    Jim Sam and Tom

  • Algo más...

Iam obviously travelling and working with my children with me, as we've been living and working in this way for a number of years now, Iam very organised and aware of both safety and being able to work efficiently and effectively. Iam quite organised and my 2 boys are very used to this way of working. I do not expect hosts to cover meals for the children and Iam quite happy to organise ourselves and be flexible to suit hosts circumstances and requirements , we are presently waitingon relocation plans later in the year , perhaps even here in Ireland, maybe even long term again should we find the right situation , Iam now in a phase where a few months with a host in the Dublin area would be absolutely perfect, although we are able to travel within a reasonable distance and commit for extended period of time if it felt right for a potential host .
I'd be greatful if any potential host contacts me directly to discuss as iam very able to adapt and combine my basic needs around what is available.
    Thank you
