Hello there, my name is Johnny, I am a traveling aspiring chef, artist and adventurer with a background in event production for artist and community. For the last couple years I have been traveling to places and cooking for different communities. At this moment, I am looking to expand and challenge myself and complete a book I have been writing. My ultimate goal is to create a sense of homeostasis as a person, to live fully, authentically and create the conditions to express myself however I see fit. After almost 4 years on the road I think I found what I was looking for, a grand adventure and one that I want to write about. I want to explore the Silk Road and the lesser known Tea Horse Road, exploring the ways in which this ancient trade routes history effects my own personal history.

I'm Johnny Chanthavong, a nomadic artist, writer, and aspiring chef with a passion for blending food, culture, community, and art. Throughout my journey, I've gathered a diverse skill set tailored for event production and hospitality. From directing event technologies for a global corporation at a luxury hotel in Maui, Hawaii, to serving as a media services specialist at a nonprofit art museum in Boston, my background spans various roles, including director, manager, chef, event production specialist, carpenter, graphic designer, and videographer.

Graduating from an art college that fostered creativity and exploration empowered me to contribute to both for-profit and nonprofit sectors. However, in 2020, a layoff in Boston prompted me to embrace a life of travel and adventure, inspired by icons like Anthony Bourdain and the pages of National Geographic. I traversed the continental United States twice, immersing myself in the wilderness of Alaska, the aloha spirit of Hawaii, and the vibrant culture of Mexico. Along the way, I curated pop-up dinners, storytelling events, and honed my authentic self-expressions.

Returning to Maui in 2024, I sought to settle down but realized my values and the work I was doing weren't perfectly aligned. My passion lies in community, storytelling, and fostering collective joy—not in another luxury hotel job. Thus, I resolved to pursue my dream project: traversing two ancient trade routes to document my experiences with food, art, and culture.

These routes—the Tea Horse Road from Laos to Southern China and the Silk Road from China to Uzbekistan—are the epitome of East-meets-West encounters in human history. As an Asian American, I see myself as a modern embodiment of this fusion. Through this journey, I aim to explore the intersection of my personal history with these ancient trade routes, delving into my lineage and ancestry to celebrate the achievements of my forebears.

My ultimate goal is to capture this experience in a comprehensive body of work that underscores the interconnections of food, family, culture, history, and mythology. I want to do a deep dive into my Dai, Lao, and Thai heritage and deepen my roots to understand myself and the world more. I'm on a quest to not only complete a book but also to reconnect with my heritage on a profound level.

Event Production Specialist and Tech Savvy - I have worked for an art museum, luxury hotels and universities doing audio video and event production support for hundreds of courses, concerts, lectures avant garde and corporate events. Well versed in multi layered productions and believe that this skill translates to many fields and interests.

Design and Documentation - I am well versed in design and documentation and can help make posters, brochures, or quick videos.
