Hello i'm James!

One of the things that motivates me in life is knowing that there is only a limited amount of time to meet different people, learn different cultures and grow as a person. By being open to meeting new people and different experiences, I have been able to travel around the world and make life long friends. When it's my turn to become an old man, I want to be able to share stories of how I worked and travelled around the world, enjoying the time I have been given on this earth!

Overall had an absolutely great time here! I ended up staying about 1.5 months here and really got the chance to know the staff and locals.

Work: the work was easy. I ended up working in the kitchen mostly. Helping to prepare the food and get setup for breakfast, lunch and dinner. I had the choice of either starting work at 5am or 5pm. On… read more Friday, it was an 3am start, but if you end up working in the kitchen and are unable to wake up that early just let them know. The work would be 5 hours, most of the time it would be a little less depending on how many people were with you that day. Also washing dishes and getting setup for the next day. Overall easy work.

Food: absolutely delicious! there was no shortage of food here and you will probably end up gaining weight during your time here haha. The kitchen staff works really hard on their meals and it surely does pay off! They provided vegetarian and non vegetarian options. They provided 3+ meals a day Monday-Friday. And on the weekends, you can usually find something or they make something. But a tip would be to save some of the food on Thursday and Friday for the weekend just in case!

Accommodation: I stayed in a cabin with a mattress and bug net. The room had fans and it had 4-8 other beds in it, but only one other person occupied the room with me. The room had fans and at night it cools down enough to where you can sleep comfortably. Tip, if there is an extra mattress available, take it and stack it on top of another! Even more comfortable! No WiFi in the room just a heads up.

Things to do: there were plenty of opportunities for me to join Yuen-Li (Boss) on her many, many adventures! Boss invited me to spend Chinese new year with her friends and family! I went surfing and camping with the staff in Chettering, caving, climbing high ropes, surfing, body boarding and many other things! Even got to attend church service with Clement and his family! There was so many things to do that sometimes I just needed time to myself to socially recharge haha.

Wi-Fi: was good but you have to be in the common area to use it. It didn’t really reach back to where the room was. But you can also just buy a SIM card for unlimited data for 30rm (Look up Hotlink)

Conclusion: I really enjoyed my time here and I would recommend this place to anyone! Everyone was super friendly, respectful and very eager to help with anything. (Everyone except Ian. He was the complete opposite of those things and I hope he changes his attitude in life and towards people in general.) thank you so much for having me and I hope to return again someday!

Wow! What an adventure! I stayed with Hassan for about 3 months and it will definitely be one of the most memorable experiences I’ve ever had. Hassan is a great guy who does his best to accommodate everyone who visits. I have gotten the chance to meet his family and friends, who were all very kind and welcoming. After staying for so long, I no… read more longer felt like I was just a Workawayer, I started to feel like apart of the family.

Work: some days were harder than others, but since I stayed during the hottest part of the year, Hassan made sure to keep everyone safe by working only a little bit each day. Maybe 1-2 hours at most. Hassan says it wouldn’t be wise to work on such hot days. Making mud bricks, patching up holes in the wall, watering the garden and feeding the chickens/goats is what you will be doing. Very easy work. When you’re not working, you will have lots of freetime to do whatever you want. Sometimes there will be more than 4 Workawayers at a time there so you can hangout with them, play cards, talk about life and walk around to explore the villages. There is also a small nearby mountain you can climb up.

Food: Hassan provided 3 meals a day, everyday. I helped prepare the meals by cutting up the onions, peeling potatoes and carrots. I hope you like bread because there will be lots of it. If you’re vegetarian, no problem. Usually the meals don’t have a lot of meat and you can eat around the meat if you want. Dinner is usually prepared late, expect to be eating dinner at around 11pm. Breakfast is usually around 9:30-10am. Lunch is around 1-3pm. (Results may vary).

Water: the water there is drinkable. I switched between drinking the water there and buying water. But I will say this, smell the water before you drink it. If it smells…undesirable, buy some water. For 10 dirhams ($1usd) you can get a 5 liter jug. Just let Hassan know and he can either bring it back from tagounite, or you can go with him yourself to get it. My advice, as soon as you get off the bus, go right into the shop and buy some water.

Electricity: Yes! He also has wifi which was really nice. But be aware there is a small cost to it, which is 50 dirham ($5usd) and that covers you for 1 month of internet usage. The wifi speed is good enough if you’re the only one connected to it. Anymore than 3 people connected to it is when things become slow. But it’s the desert, so any internet is good internet. He also has a refrigerator so if you need to keep anything cold/frozen, that’s an option.

How to get there: If you’re coming from Marrakech, head to the bus station and look for the CTM bus. Get the bus that leaves at around 11:15am and arrives in Tagounite at around 9:00pm. It’s a long bus trip, so be sure to bring some snacks and water with you. The bus makes stops along the way too so you should be good. The cost is usually about 250-300 dirham ($25-$30usd)

I came from Agadir so my route to tagounite was a little different. From Agadir, I went to the bus station and walked around and found a bus that leaves Agadir at 9:00pm and arrived in Tagounite at 8:30am the next morning. I slept pretty much all the way through the night. Cost was also about 250 dirham ($25usd) where ever you’re coming from, be sure to get to the bus station early enough to buy the ticket. Sometimes there won’t be anymore tickets available. I would recommend going to the bus station 1-2 hours early and booking the ticket.

Final thoughts: bring some sunscreen, some playing cards, a coloring book, I don’t know. Bring something to keep you entertained.

Overall, I had a great experience living with Hassan and working alongside him. He’s a great host and even better friend! I look forward to visiting again sometime in the future, take care strong man Hassan!
