We are Jake and Ágota and we are currently travelling the world! We have planned, roughly, to visit parts of Central America, Africa and Southern Asia, but are seeing where the road takes us!

    – Jake

We both have degrees and mine is in law; however my life has not been confined to studying! Rather, it has been a blend of experiences – from growing up in northern England, to crafting cocktails in central London, and finally to moving to the South Western English coast where myself and Ágota have lived for the past five years. It was coastal beauty that taught me to appreciate simplicity and where my love for hiking, nature, cooking and reading have flourished. There is little I enjoy more than finding an isolated beach, catching a fish, cooking it on an open fire, and listening to the ocean. My taste in music – contemporary classical piano – mirrors this appreciation for the uncomplicated.

Beyond superficial travel, I recognise that life as a lawyer may not fully encompass the things I want from life – which more than anything are to be healthy, to spend lots of time with my loved ones in a beautiful place, and to pursue knowledge. Travelling for me is therefore just as much about exploring diverse ways of life potentially more suited to me, as it is about seeing new sights or meeting different people. In this respect I would love to learn about sustainable living, farming and house building. I think these goals align well with Workaway's core values of cultural exchange and experiential education.

Due to my experience in cocktail bars I would say I am a relatively outgoing, friendly person; but I am also professional (if the environment requires it), trustworthy and kind-hearted. A quick learner, I believe I will be able to draw from my legal background, prior volunteering experience, and hospitality training to tackle the challenges associated with off-grid living or working in hostels whilst simultaneously picking up quickly on community dynamics.

    – Ágs

I previously participated in Erasmus student-exchange programs in Gdansk, Poland and Istanbul, Turkey. After finishing my studies in Hungary, I moved to England to pursue my dream job in education and to develop my language skills. Since, I became a qualified KS1/KS2 (6-11 years old) primary school and TEFL teacher in the UK, a profession I am truly passionate about. I also enjoy learning and teaching languages - I am particularly curios about using individuals' native languages in order to develop their English language skills.

Whilst I was working in British schools, I thought of enjoyable and creative activities to develop EAL pupils' English language, social and emotional skills - this experience taught me invaluable skills both as a person and as a professional. This and my own personal experiences is what fuels my high interest in language acquisition and working with both adults and children. I believe in hands-on, play-based learning, an approach which I have practiced for a year in an Early Years Class (4-5 years old) in England.

I also come from a smaller village in Hungary; where I used to take care of animals and do outside work growing up. I feel this influenced my love for the outdoors and travelling. I am curious and enthusiastic about other individuals' cultures, languages and way of life. I like to exchange ideas and views with others in order to explore our history, nature and traditions. I am also interested in learning Spanish!

I am beyond excited to work with communities, learn more about sustainable living and agriculture - gaining further skills that I will also be able to promote amongst children and other individuals. I believe it will also helps us develop more, and different perspectives of the world we live in.

    – Jake

I have a first class law degree from the University of Plymouth, in England. Whilst studying I achieved a number of academic awards and graduated at the top of my class. I have two pieces of work published and have experience sitting in court and working with barristers on cases involving both property law and family law.

Throughout my studies I also worked as an assistant to a solicitor for a refugee charity. I conducted initial interviews with clients, who as refugees were often highly vulnerable, filled in paperwork and assessed applications to live in the UK permanently. I was also involved in collecting information on foreign countries in order to help clients make fresh asylum appeals.

Prior to my studies I had a career in hospitality at various levels. I was an assistant general manager for a very successful bar/restaurant in Plymouth for two years, and a bartender/shift manager in three different bars in London for a further three. I can cook, mix plenty of cocktails, design menus, take care of admin and help with branding.
