This was a Workaway experience like no other and one that will stay in the memory bank for a very long time. Frank and Asli are passionate and lovely hosts who made me feel very welcome from the minute I arrived. They also have 2 adorable kids who also played their part in making me feel at home.

Frank and Asli run a sustainable off-grid… read more homestead farm in Corozal where no two days are the same and a multitude of different tasks are carried out each day. They were clear and concise regarding their expectations and volunteering tasks to be done, and along with this, they have an ethos that the Workaway experience should benefit both the host and the Workawayer which I found very admirable. And on this, the work was exactly as described on their profile page - varied, interesting, fulling and fun. Another thing I liked about working here was how receptive they are to new ideas from Workawayers which was a bonus.

The family ties here are very strong and I was invited to eat with them for breakfast, lunch and dinner - a great way to start and end the day! Food was cooked by either Frank and Asli who are amazing cooks! (Note: if you do stay, ask Asli to make you plantain porridge and all spice tea both of which are delicious!) Luckily, I am a confident cook and so as well as the volunteering tasks, I contributed to cooking and preparing some meals for the family.

I worked in a very friendly, relaxed environment, normally starting work around 8am and ending when the day’s tasks were complete - most days that was between 3pm and 4pm but on occasions I only worked until 2pm. Evenings after dinner were my own to do as I pleased, but I chose to spend them having relaxed and funny conversations with the family, normally over a game of Monopoly! The work was varied and I learnt a lot of new skills such as learning how to identify and collect thatch and use it to build a thatched hut on the farm, some carpentry and plumbing, helping to build a swimming pool and collecting a wide variety of leaves (eg Hibiscus and Citrus leaves) that were to be processed as herbal teas (…another tip, get Frank or Asli to show you around the farm homestead - I was blown away with the huge variety of plants, flowers and trees that they grow for food and medicinal purposes which is testimony to how committed and passionate they are, not just regarding life, but what they do and how they do it). They also keep bees on the homestead (so lots of gorgeous honey!) and had many interesting conversations about the intriguing life of bees. I also performed other tasks familiar to me such as gardening and helping to feed their chickens. It was fascinating to see first hand how nothing goes to waste here - it is quite simply sustainable living in its purest form…Weekends were my own and there are plenty of sights and interesting towns nearby to explore. Corozal is only a 30 minute drive from the Mexican border, handy if you want to head into Mexico for the weekend!

I stayed in one of the charming, simple thatched huts at the bottom of the farm. The bed was very comfortable and the hut also had mosquito nets built in. The wifi is excellent and even though I was staying in the hut away from the main house, the signal was great, so much so that I was able to walk around the farm when having various FaceTime calls with friends and family back home.

A quick note about Corozal - it’s easy to get to as it’s the largest town in the Corazol district - regular buses leave frequently from Belize City, and the journey time from there to Corozal is about 2.5 hours. It is also easy to get there from other parts of Belize eg Belmopan, Hopkins, and Dangriga.

To sum up, the best thing about this Workaway experience was that Frank, Asli give an invaluable insight into how they run their Belizean farm and at the same time allowing me to integrate into their everyday life. So, if you’re looking for a truly absorbing and fulfilling Workaway experience, then I would highly recommend applying to work at Frank and Asli’s sustainable off-grid farm homestead.

Thank you Frank and Asli - my time in your home and working alongside you both made my experience very special and has brought me a deep sense of happiness…I am sure our paths will cross again very soon!
