We are Kimbra and Volker, with our dog Barley. Our home is in a beautiful hidden valley, surrounded by wild life, birds, animals and peace. While the property is large, it is not a commercial farm or business, and we seek volunteers who appreciate nature and love to be outdoors in the garaden. We are off-grid, with a stand-alone hydro generator. We rely on wood fired heating and cooking, so firewood collection is always a priority. Kimbra is an eco-dyer, and can pass on this knowledge if you are interested.

    Summer months
We are busy preparing our home for summer!Clearing weeds and debris from our two gardens, and the bush. We are situated in a quiet valley with high sandstone cliffs and a natural creek.

We aim for a complete sustainable life, and have lived off-grid for over 30 years. There is a friendly dog. Our property covers approximately 350 acres (111 Hectares) of mostly native bush with abundant wildlife and native birds. Our aim is to leave the land in better shape than when we arrived here, and we need help to realise this dream. We need assistance with garden chores, weeding, digging, planting. We have two large garden areas, one has a mix of herbs, fruits and flowering plants, the other is almost entirely flowering plants. I want to create more bird attracting spaces in our gardens as I love to see the native birds here. the flowers give me joy, and the herbs taste wonderful! It will be berry season soon and there will be fruit to pick and turn into jam or freeze for the winter. And every few days the grassy paths need to be trimmed up.We are happy to let you enjoy finding ways to improve our surroundings so we can continue sharing with more travellers and local friends. We are part of a friendly commmunity, with many skilled artisans and off-grid folk, it's a beautiful place to spend some time recuperating after travel.
We are not close to transport options, but can meet and collect you from nearby New Norfolk. If you want a peaceful off-grid experience, please consider applying. Ideally you need your own transport.

*️Please note: We have limited access to internet, and phone reception is not consistent, so unless you can live without constant connectivity, think about this before you apply. Thanks for reading, and we look forward to welcoming you.

You are in a natural wild area, where the Tasmanian bush and its ecosystem are at your fingertips. There is no light pollution, no neighbours, and a great way to escape to nature and really live in the outdoors and experience Tasmania. We never have large groups here, and even when there are others around, you will find it easy to locate quiet spots for contemplation and refreshing! Kimbra's natural dying process is another way you can learn new skills, and Volker has many skills to pass on too.WE love sharing meals, and trying out your recipes as we cook together.Vegetarian mostly.

The help we need includes gardening in either of two large garden spaces, fencing, weeding, planting for Summer and Autumn flowers. Also landscaping bush areas, trimming growth, and helping to collect firewood for the woodfired ovens and heating to keep you comfortable and well nourished.

We need fit energetic adventurous helpers, with a love of the outdoors, and enthusiasm to try new things. We provide healthy mostly vegetarian food, shared meals or seperate.
GARDEN: There is a newly fenced garden area needs working the soil, weeding, clearing rocks, and planning and planting flowers for Summer/Autumn.
FIREWOOD: At all times, firewood collection is part of the day-to-day operation, and needs constant re-stocking. This is because we use it daily, unless there is a fire ban, we spend time around the fire sharing food and stories, and our indoor home cooking is done on wood fired ovens.
We collect up all the old bits and pieces left from the former owners, and re-use and re-cycle wherever we can. We try not to create waste and always look for ways to repurpose old stuff, saving on expenses, and using our creativity to re-see items. So you can use your ingenuity and have some fun creating garden sculptures.
FLOWERS:I have a large iris patch that the wallabies have started eating!! so I will be transplanting these after they complete flowering(december-March. and a large area of narcissus which I add to each year so the hill turnds golden in Spring...so far the wallabies don't eat them... planting and designing beds and pathways, sitting areas, and bulbs to re-locate. February and March and April is planting time for narcissus!
Native flowering plants: We love the birds which visit our garden, and there is an ongoing native garden to prune, and add to.

    Alojamiento

Accomodation options are variable, and we work out with you your best option...some of our previous workaway friends have had their own vans, but we can offer camping near the creek, a converted truck (for couples) a sleepout van (for couples or single) or if you are a couple a seperate self contained cabin. We have a spare room in our house, for short stays only (up to a week). We offer shared kitchen space, gas facilities/woodfired cooking/campfire cooking. There is a lovely swimming hole for hot days.

    Algo más...

Situated within the Derwent Valley a 45 minute drive/bus ride to Hobart city, 30 minutes to MONA museum, or access to the South-West wilderness, trout fishing waters, Mt Field National Park, spectacular forest and scenery abounds. There is a regular bus service, but you need your own transport to get to our place, although we can arrange to collect guests from the bus, we don't go out daily. The local town has a good range of shopping-pubs, petrol and food (large supermarket) also community garden for fresh produce. We are always busy on one or other project, we spend as much time on our property as possible, and prefer to keep our outside work to a minimum. We have limited wifi/ and phone reception, our satellite connection is not constant, and can drop out unexpectedly but if you need to connect it is possible in some areas of the property. It will depend on your service carrier, and sometimes the weather, or the time of day. We get reasonable radio reception, and devices can be charged at the cabin or the house. If you can't live without your mobile devices, this is probably not your ideal destination. We also suggest you have sturdy footwear, workboots or gumboots are good, work gloves for your hands too. If you are ready to experience outdoor life, and learn some new skills in a quiet remote space, with wildlife for company, and love an adventure, we are ready for you!

We can offer several spaces for vans at our creekside area, best time is the Summer and Autumn, as the creek level can limit accessiblity to amenities.
