Descripción
This is a social cooperative created by people who live and produce in mountainous areas. Our goal is to succeed in a worth living development scheme in mountainous areas. Workawayers are for us a great way for reviving our villages, meeting new people, exchanging ideas, having feasts, and cooperating with our visitors.

Our members are farmers, livestock farmers, foragers, beekeepers, but also carpenters, artists and makers.

You will be hosted in our stone house in Demati and work in our prototype greenhouses. During your stay you will also have the opportunity to help local communities in their projects, visit different places and support people occupied in a great spectrum of activities.

Visitors will be able to learn all the procedures of producing fully organic food, mushroom hunting and foraging, beekeeping, carpentry as well as other farm related tasks. They will see, learn and live our culture and traditions, make good friends, experience local festivals and the mountainous way of life.

I really loved staying with Roula, Aleka, Gianni and Trifonas in Kalloni :)
We harvested grapes together and I helped a little bit with bee-keeping and in the Taverna.

I spent 1 week in Demati and another week in Aristi, mainly helping alongside Vicky (our organic greenhouse queen) and Faidonas (an endlessly fascinating landscape anthropologist that can teach you so much about the local history).

In Demati me and 3 other workawayers helped Vicky in tending to the greenhouses and digging a drainage ditch. the… read more digging tasks were tiring but very rewarding. We were often left to our own devices to manage our own time which was very fulfilling and trusting of the hosts. We Cooked together with food from the greenhouses as well as delicious greek food supplied by the hosts every few days when they visited Demati. Deamti is a very remote village with beautiful views and nice opportunities to walk and relax, a personal highlight for me was walking to a beautiful village over an adventurous route across the mountains, to then be picked up and taken back to demati. We baked bread, shared stories and sat in front of the fire drinking local tsipouro. another highlight was joining Vasilis to forage for wild mushrooms which was a very wholesome and rewarding experience, Vasilis is extrmemly knowledgable!

Aristi was a breathtakingly beautiful town where we helped clear footpaths and organised the village archives with Faidonas. it was really interesting hearing stories from the area. we staying in a hotel organised by Faidonas and ate 3 delicious meals a day at a local restaurant, all free of charge ( I felt guilty for being given so much when the help was so enjoyable!)

Sotiris and Vasilis were very kind and made sure all helpers were happy and knew what we were doing, there may be times on this project where you are left to your own to devices, but as long as you are resourceful and can find tasks for yourself then you will be able to make a difference! Ther were so many opportunities to go on trips to local events and sights (vikos gorge, also a mushroom festival!) and so many opportunities to learn about greek culture, this is what workaways are all about!

As well as helping the other workawayers i took photos and videos for the organisation, which was really rewarding, i am glad my camera skills could be put to good use!

One thing to note is that the house in Demati + the hotel rooms in Aritst were shared bedrooms, so make sure you get in touch beforehand if you feel you need your own space and privacy, I was very kindly given my own room in the house after talking to the other workawayers about liking my own privacy ( which I was very thankful for!)

Overall a truly great experience that is likely to be varied and different depending on the capacity for villages to host and the available seasonal help. I would love to stay for months and see what else the Epirus mountains have to offer!

I spent two weeks in Demati and one week in Aristi. It was a surprisingly rich experience, full of sharing, creating and learning. In Demati, we were taking care of the greenhouses every day, watering, weeding, planting, and the big mission: digging a canal. That was a real challenge, we made an entire playlist for digging music to have the power.… read more It's amazing how practical problem-solving can give four scientists such joy! The team consisted of two environmental scientists, a zoologist and a sleep researcher, thirsty for work with bare hands. Our guide was an agricultural engineer, Viki, who showed us the basics, but otherwise, we were kind of left alone with the task. We made our own schedule, our own decisions, when to take breaks, what to eat, Sotiris and Vasilis were only coming for checking. Therefore, I would not suggest this Workaway for someone who needs constant guiding and clear instructions. It's like a peek into a parallel life you could have if you would live a self-sustainable life in a Greek mountain village the size of a napkin. What is it like to bake your own bread? What is it like to open up to a stranger by the fireplace, like if you were a family? Waking up with the Sun, and saying 'welcome' to the seedlings you plant?
Vasilis once took us on a mushroom hunt, that was amazing. The feeling when you see the mushrooms you picked and the fresh beetroot and lettuce from the greenhouse on your plate...

In Aristi, we joined Faidonas, a landscape archaeologist, who shared his impressive knowledge about the area. We helped him with the maintenance of the local hiking trails and sorting out documents (some older than 100 years!) in the abandoned local school. Those mountains are magical, we swam in the azure river Voidomatis, spotted a lot of fascinating animals, and we even found an old gramophone with a bunch of vinyls that somehow survived the storms of the years! When the buttery-foggy voice of a Greek singer from the 50s filled the room with piles of old books..I have many moments I'll never forget, like the local shepherd's smile on the way to the Vikos Canyon, or when Sotiris's daughter drew a yellow sea floating up and down in the sky, or when we tried a soup made of 13 different kinds of local wild mushrooms on the mushroom festival where Vasilis invited us, and so on and so on, it was truly Greek! I consumed about 3 liters of olive oil in 3 weeks.

Thank you Sotiris for your insights about Greece today, Vasilis for my new enthusiasm for mushrooms, Viki for touching the soil with bare hands to connect more, Christina for the recipes, Faidonas for giving us the eye to see the valley vertically in time and for the secret swimming spot, and Christos for showing us the way in the forest!

Unfortunately Melanie and Axel left way earlier than agreed, in the beginning of the blueberies picking season. It was very hard for the producer that was left without help in the most crucial period of the year, especially after spending time and money to host, feed and train the two volunteers on the upcoming tasks.
