Descripción
We are a family of five living in northwestern Ontario. Our summer projects include maintaining fence lines, building a small shelter, hand milling wood and our biggest project - building our log cabin family retreat. We love to go fishing year round and hunting when the season is open! Wild game is a major component of our diet. We also try to grow as much of our food as we can manage at this time. That doesn’t mean that all our meals are 100% healthy, I like to pick up a pizza every now and then! Our family goes to a small community church and we like to help out with our community when we have the opportunity. We live on a river close to two lakes, and with Quetico park on our doorstep we often head out there for BBQing for the evening. We also love to go boating to Lake Superior for salmon fishing!

We like sharing experiences such as hunting, fishing, campfires and music. Backyard BBQs are common and it wouldn’t be rare to help out a neighbour. We love hearing about different ways of life and experiences. If you are interested we can show you some historical mines in the area. Quetico park is 20 min away and we often go there to BBQ a meal and watch the sunset, you would be welcome to use our canoe and paddle the river we live on.

Ayuda
We can teach most of the skills for our projects but carpentry and machinery skills are a huge bonus. We often use chainsaws with our projects. Willingness to be outdoors is a must.
Since we are so diversified in our projects you can expect to be part of a variety of projects including wood working, machinery, gardening/preserving. We have some animals but we take care of them ourselves. If you want to learn how to cook I’m happy to teach! An average day might be helping with animal care/watering garden, then helping on a project like cutting up firewood or painting a shed.

Alojamiento
We have a heated addition to our workshop for winter, which isn’t the coziest yet but has plenty of space and is always nice and cool in the summer. For summer, spring and fall we have a 32 ft trailer with queen bed and AC. Also has water, heat, etc. Bathroom is shared, we have a large deck we are almost completed. In winter we have an 8 person hot tub. I cook almost all our meals but if I need to go to the city there’s a chance I’ll be too tired and bring home pizza. I can do my best to incorporate your favourite foods/avoid those you hate!

Most of our free time is spent hunting or fishing, we like to take walks on our property in the evening. If you have your own transportation there’s a lot of historical stuff to see in the area.

We had the best time on our 2 week stay with Ruth, Matt and the kids (not forgetting Dodge(the ditcher lol) and kitty)! Just about all the food was home made and tasted so fresh Ruth has excellent cooking skills. We enjoyed 3 square meals a day, all of which were delicious. We ate last year's moose in steaks & cured meat, home raised chicken, very… read more nice blueberry pancakes and home baked bread.
We have stolen some of Ruth's cooking recipes and brought them home with us to the UK ;)

We were very welcomed in their home and family and were made to feel that whatever was theirs was ours.
Our accommodation was nice, in a trailer hooked up with electricity and water and was comfortable and private.

Within our 2 weeks we packed in so much, panelling the frame for a new cow shed for the highland cows, mosquito proofing the gazebo(we all hate mosquitos) including making and installing a door, building new stairs to the outside decking, painting the decking, helping saw logs on the saw mill and converting Matts workshop lighting to LED. We also got involved with their log cabin which is roughly 1 hour away, which included peeling logs and setting a log, this was hard yet rewarding work.
We even rounded up the cows after they escaped whilst we were alone on the homestead, like true canadian herders ha ha, albeit in their ATV side by side.

Matt and Ruth were also enthusiastic about showing us the area they live in and took us on one of their fishing trips which was just beautiful scenery. At at our request we got to fillet one of the fish they caught, and had a family fish supper.

We met both of their extended family who were equally as accommodating as Matt and Ruth and invited us to spend personal time with them. We joined the family on a sauna night next to one of the many beautiful lakes that they jump into to cool off (too cold for me but I'll take my husband's word that it's very exhilarating)!
We have in the past seen on TV, processors working their magic on trees, Matt's brother runs a business doing just this. We are in awe of these large machines chewing up a log like a crisp so Matt took us to see one in real life. This is not something that everyone wants to see but it just shows how Matt and Ruth went the extra mile to fulfil our requirement of our Canada visit.

They were very informative of their country and gave us an insight of how Canadian life works. They had excellent knowledge of the wildlife and were able to give us any information we wanted to know.
We were involved in their life so quickly and soon felt part of the family.

The 3 beautiful children were a delight to be around. You could definitely tell they loved their way of life. Their 18 month old son will be the best tree climber in Canada when he is older.

Overall we had a fantastic time and would definitely like to visit again and experience a different season (we would love to go hunting in the autumn(fall)).
We wouldn't change a thing from our true Canadian experience.
