We're a friendly family of four living in beautiful West Auckland, New Zealand, with our two enthusiastic fox terriers and a handful of chickens. Our semi-rural home in Waitakere is relaxed and surrounded by nature, with a large garden and deck for chilling on sunny days. We live close to local shops, cafes, rainforest and bushwalks, beaches, weekend markets, and West Auckland wineries. We think you'll love the mix of calm peaceful surroundings, wild nature and local beauty, and accessibility to Auckland City which has lots to offer.

Our family is made up of Grant and Lorna, and our two awesome daughters (12 and 10 years old). Grant works in IT, and Lorna is a specialist teacher. Our girls are Kiwis, but Grant and Lorna are from Scotland, so we understand what it's like to travel and live away from home. We offer a warm family atmosphere with good meals, clear communication, and a welcome vibe.

We're looking for a practical, reliable, female Workawayer who likes being outdoors and can help us mostly get on top of some gardening decluttering and outdoor help. Our home would suit someone with their own car, who likes dogs, enjoys a family environment, and is also happy doing their own thing. In exchange, we can offer a welcoming place to stay, time to explore local attractions, and company in a relaxed family environment. We're happy to share suggestions and help you make the most of your time with us. You would also be welcome to join us in weekend activities to explore and socialise and experience a slice of Kiwi family life.

Cultural exchange in our home would be informal and family-based. We eat dinner together most nights and enjoy relaxed weekend time such as movie nights, games nights, and sometimes having friends over for dinner. At weekends we might visit markets, or we often take our dogs out for walks to local beaches, forests, parks and bush tracks, and Workawayers would be welcome to join us whenever they like.

We can support Workawayers with English language practice through everyday conversation, and we are happy to share local knowledge, cultural information, and suggestions for activities in Auckland and wider New Zealand. We can help them find places to visit and other things to do during free time.

We are Scottish immigrants to New Zealand and well travelled ourselves, so we understand how valuable it is to learn about other cultures, languages and ways of living. This is something we want to model for our children, and we would love them to have the opportunity to meet people from different parts of the world, chat with them, and learn from their experiences.

We're mainly looking for help with general gardening and outdoor tidying, with a few inside household tasks here and there. Our garden has wild spots (overgrowth, bamboo etc), so we would love someone practical who enjoys helping outside and can help us get tasks done in a quicker timeframe.

Tasks may include weeding, pruning, cutting and clearing overgrown areas, tidying/planting in garden beds, sweeping paths and outdoor areas, removing garden waste, and general outdoor maintenance.
Occasionally, we may also ask for some help with indoor tasks (cleaning or re-organising). Experience with gardening would be helpful, but more important to us is someone who has a positive attitude, initiative, and a willingness to just get stuck in. We can only work in our garden at weekends ourselves, so we would appreciate someone who can do stuff independently during week days, once shown what needs doing.

We have a four-bedroom family home with an open-plan kitchen, dining and living area, a separate lounge, laundry, and a large garden. The Workawayer would have a comfortable, large double bedroom and would share the family bathroom and toilet with other household members. Bedding and towels will all be provided.

The house is comfortable year-round, with heat pumps for heating and air conditioning, as well as an open fire for colder evenings in winter. Our garden can get quite warm on sunnier winter days and there is a large deck with tables and chairs to relax and/or eat meals, if dry.

We also have two friendly, energetic fox terriers who are very much part of our family, so Workawayers would need to be comfortable living with dogs. They are affectionate and lively, and enjoy being around people.

During the week, breakfast is usually help-yourself as we're usually getting ready for work and school. At weekends, we sometimes sit down together for a shared cooked breakfast. Lunches are usually packed lunches during the week, and Workawayers can either have a packed lunch ready-made for them or help themselves to food at home during the day. Evening meals are usually eaten together at the table as a family, although occasionally at weekends we might have a more relaxed dinner while watching a movie.

We generally eat healthy, home-cooked food, including Western-style family meals and some meals inspired by other cultures. We eat plenty of vegetables and a range of foods, including meat, poultry, or fish a couple of times a week. We don't eat much junk food or takeaways, but we eat well and we're happy to have some extra snacks available for Workawayers throughout the day. Also happy to have a go at alternative culture dishes! If needed, we can support someone who is dairy-free, as one of our daughters already uses dairy alternatives.

  • Algo más...

    Algo más...

We're in a semi-rural community so a Workawayer would need their own car to properly explore. However, we're a 2 minute drive away from the local train and bus station, where transport can take them into Auckland City.

Locally, there's the Waitakere Rainforest bushtracks, and forest trails which are easily reached by car. The West Coast beach closest to us ( 15 minutes drive) is a volcanic black sand beach with stunning scenery and great surf. Also close to us are other gorgeous West Coast beaches (including Piha and Karekare from the movie, The Piano), nature walks, and wine tours - great ways to get to meet other people. In the city, there are options for adrenaline seekers, as well as a lively night life, restaurants, and opportunities for other excursions (boat trips, whale and dolphin watching, markets, trips to the dormant Rangitoto volcano, galleries, and museums).

We would like Workawayers to be respectful of our family home, clean up after themselves, communicate clearly, and be mindful that we have children and dogs in the household. We're friendly and welcoming, but we also appreciate people who are independent, tidy, reliable, and comfortable having some time to themselves.

It's important to know that we're a non-smoking household and that includes outdoors in our garden. Workawayers would need to be comfortable around dogs and aware that our fox terriers are part of everyday family life.

We're looking for help for 4-5 hours per day for 5 days of a week. However, the jobs can be done at anytime during the day/early evening and can probably fit around any digital work that workawayers need to do.
