We are a non-profit organization. We are engaged in the reconstruction of the castle from the 13th century. In 2020 we became the owners of the castle. Our plan is very simple. We are assisted in our work by our goats, which we milk every morning and evening, and with their milk we continue to make homemade cheese and milk products.

You will learn not only a lot about Slovak history, but also how buildings were built at that time and what materials were most often used. You will also learn about archaeology and the process of preserving excavations and, of course, how to take care of animals, how to make homemade goat cheese or bryndza (a typical Slovak product). We will teach you how to communicate with tourists and also how to do business. You will not only learn how to bricklayer, but you will be in a beautiful environment and gradually you will learn plumbing and electrical work as well. And what all can you learn with us?
Bricklaying, plumbing, electrician, cook, orcheologist, animal care : milking goats, dairy production, problem solving, painting, history, historical bricklaying , building buildings according to historical regulations and much more.
We have a great team around us and we are all here as a family and we help each other whether in our private life or in our working life. We cook for everyone in the house. And we try to have breakfast and lunch all at the same table.

Our tasks is not very physically demanding. Of course, we also have a lot of visitors at our castle, who need to be shown, for example, our museum, where you can find archaeology, old furniture, old and historical weapons and excavations, and much more.
Bricklayer, orcheologist, vet, cleaner, electrician, plumber, heating engineer, painter and much more. We will train you for all activities. You do not need any experience.

Terms and conditions and information for staying and helping at Sklabina Castle.

    Accommodation :
The rescue and repair of the castle is our first priority. Accommodation for our volunteers is in shared rooms which are modestly furnished. It is a good idea for volunteers to bring their own sleeping bag when they arrive (if they don't have one we are willing to lend both a pillow and a pillow of course). The house is heated with solid fuel in winter, the heating is left on according to the frost (strong frost heating - goes all the time, weak frost - heating goes only at night) and therefore it is necessary to close all doors regularly and always behind. Whether to the hallway from the room or to the toilet or kitchen. When you leave the door open, heat escapes and you don't want you or others in the house to be cold, do you? 😊 Another important piece of information is that we are trying to save the castle and save the planet. That's why we recycle all the waste we produce. All plastics belong in yellow garbage bags (they are in the kitchen), municipal waste belongs in black bags and organic waste is put in a bucket in the kitchen, which is then eaten by goats. Glass and tin are put separately. Saving electricity is also important to us. That is why it is necessary to turn off the lights everywhere, as long as there is no one else in the room. We get our electricity from solar panels and are therefore dependent on sunny weather. Therefore, it is not possible to run high-power appliances or other equipment every day, for example. Of course common devices like a laptop or a phone charger do not pose a problem. It is the same with the buckle. If you need to do laundry, you need to check with us whether it is possible on that day. The washing machine is of course in the house, but you need to look at how much electricity is available.

    Clothes, shoes:
As the castle is constantly being worked on, it is necessary for volunteers who come to us to have sturdy shoes. Ideally he should also have work clothes, but we can lend you some if necessary ( wash and clean ).
As far as professional work such as bricklaying or carpentry is concerned, it is necessary for the volunteer to be with us for a longer period of time (at least 14 days, ideally a month), this is mainly because it takes time to train one person, and here bricklaying is different (technology, procedures, materials) than where you build a normal house. Historical masonry is used here. And that's why we can't train a person who came here for 5 days to know how to brick when just the basic training takes more than a week.
It goes without saying that I don't just run away from work to somewhere where, for example, there is a beautiful sunset and I need to take a picture of it. It is important to inform Michal or Miroslav that you are going away for a while. So that we know that nothing happened to you and you went there or thereabouts.

As far as cooking is concerned, lunch is always cooked for everyone and we try to make breakfast for everyone and take turns regularly. So it might be your turn to have to cook breakfast for everyone. If the breakfast is not made for anyone, it's a good idea to check with the people who have been at the castle for a long time that why that is and whether everyone has to make their own breakfast. Lunch is usually between 1 and 4 pm. We don't have a person who is in the kitchen all the time, so those times can change. It's always about whoever has the time and consults with us can cook lunch.

    bonuses and working hours:

Working hours are 5 hours a day 5 days a week. Of course, if there are several volunteers, shifts can be arranged so that the first group will work, for example, from 8am to 1pm and the second group will start at 1pm to 6pm. But it is always up to everyone in the house to agree. For us the most important thing is to do as much work as possible on the castle. We sacrificed our private lives for the sake of the castle. And so we have almost no time for anything else except the castle.
Of course we will be happy to take you on a trip (if the weather and the visitors at the castle and of course our work allow us). You can make the trip yourself, but we would like to know at least the location and approximate time when you will probably return. Because the house is locked for the night. If you would like to come with us on a trip (or to the water park ) and we would drive you there and bring you back, we would need everyone who wants to take the trip to do about 4 hours more work. This is mainly because we are repairing the whole castle with donations (entrance fees, souvenirs, visitors, etc.).

    Tours with us:
Waterpark, nature, other castle, lake, other places in Slovakia, caves and much more.

And what is our job actually about and what you can learn with us?
The main aspect of the job is the different seasons in which you come to us. For example, you can work with us

GARDEN WORK: from spring to winter
watering plants, weeding plants, planting plants, or repairing fences that can be destroyed by goats.
In autumn, for example: harvesting, ploughing and fertilizing and preparing the soil for winter.

winter: feeding the goats -water, hay, vegetables, pastries
spring to autumn: checking and repairing the fence, milking the goats, cleaning the stables and basic veterinary work.
Year-round: feeding, grooming and walking dogs, cats.

Spring through fall: mowing lawn, cleaning yard, preparing wood for winter, cutting wood and stacking it in a designated area.
Summer: turning hay and cleaning up hay for winter
Autumn: raking leaves, gathering nuts and chestnuts
Year-round: breaking and drying bread for the goats, then drying and storing in place.

Year-round: it is necessary to know that this castle is visited year-round by tourists not only from Slovakia but also from abroad. In case of visitors from abroad we are willing to teach you the interpretation of the history in the museum in English and you can accompany people. Of course, this also includes taking care of the museum, dusting and cleaning the artifacts and so on. As needed.

Cook lunch or make breakfast. We can always agree on who will do it and what will be cooked to avoid complications that this one doesn't eat mushrooms and that example has problems with milk. Wash and put away the dishes, clean the whole kitchen and dining room and separate the rubbish. Food is cooked for everyone.

CHEESE MAKING: from spring to autumn we regularly milk our goats every day and from the milk we make fresh cheese which we will teach you how to make and then smoked cheese and also a special Slovak product called bryndza. Once a year we also have a classic Slovak slaughter and then we make delicious goat sausages.

for volunteers who will be here for less than 14 days: auxiliary work - such as:
collecting stones, searching for artefacts, mowing lawns, picking up rubbish after tourists, working with building materials, transporting materials, putting out lime, repairing tools, serving materials on site and much more.

For volunteers who will be here LONGER than 14 days: we can teach you how to work professionally if weather and time permits, such as:
bricklaying, carpentry (if we are doing trusses and other such work at the time), plastering (if the real plastering is going on at the time) and much more.

You can see for yourself that there is more than enough work at the castle and everyone will find something for themselves. For us, the most important thing is the repair of the castle and everything else develops from there. The castle is number 1 for us: IF YOU WANT WE WILL TEACH YOU, IF YOU DON'T WANT WE WON'T TEACH YOU ANYTHING.
We are normal people and if there is any problem it is necessary to solve it with us. If you don't know something, just ask. If you need anything, say it. Communication is important. Even if our English is not 100% we can always understand each other and we can solve any problem together.

We work collectively. We are as strong as our weakest link.

accommodation is directly at the castle. So not only will you be working at the castle, but you will also be living there. We have built two buildings with roofs. In the first building, we have a museum and living quarters. It sleeps about 10 people. There is of course also a kitchen, social facilities, a dining room and a sauna. And in the second building we have a lapidarium and a ticket office for tourists. Upstairs you can sleep. It sleeps about 15 people, but there are no beds made yet. As far as accommodation is concerned, we have electricity from solar panels and water from a well. We also have internet access. we live here all year round. the heating is with solid fuel but the whole house is heated. It's a normal life like on a farm. We are ecologically friendly and we are trying to protect our planet and preserve history for future generations.
