Notice: We are currently looking for Workawayers to start immediately.

We live on an old estate with 19 rescue equines (donkeys, ponies and horses), 30 rescued pet pigs and various sheep, goats, dogs and chickens. We are part of a larger animal rescue charity, this is our private residence with mostly retired animals unsuitable for rehoming. We also are looking for volunteers for the larger rescue farm, more details can follow if you are interested.
The animals thrive in a calm environment therefor we are looking for positive attitudes, happy to muck in and get through the manual labour as well as patience and thoughtfulness with animals who need time to come around. This is incredibly rewarding help if you enjoy tuning in to the little achievements each day can bring in the rehabilitation world.
You need to be physically fit and strong for the yard tasks and preferably have experience with horses.

In return for your help you will learn how to gain trust, be safe with animals and prepare them for general care and maintenance such as hoof care, dental care and handling. You will learn about not just the everyday care of pigs and goats but also the less agricultural side of welfare such as the phycological and nutritional needs of farm animals not intended for slaughter, and therefor focus is on longevity of health. We are not traditional in certain methods where force is used, so you will learn a great deal about body language, reading behaviour and monitoring your own behaviour to ensure successful interaction with the animals here.

You must be a genuine pig lover! We have so many here who need attention and understanding as well as the equines and other animals, we are looking for volunteers who are over 24 years of age and have had experience in a working environment before.
We start tasks at 08.30am. Daily tasks would be hay and feed everyone, medications, mucking out stables or paddocks, foraging enrichment for the farm animals, Physio exercise or ground tasks with equines, field management such a fence fixing, various yard management jobs to keep the place organised, and spending time with all the animals providing attention and companionship. Help with documenting certain animals progress by video or photographs, meeting potential adopters and visiting our main rescue centre are all optional, depending on your interests and time.

Your accommodation would be a newly built log cabin with central heating, double glazing, bathroom and bedrooms. If you are travelling alone there will always be other like-minded volunteers here with you so you won't be lonely!.
You can prepare your own meals in a rustic kitchen cabin with the ingredients of your choice we provide. If you are not confident with your cooking skills I will be more than happy to help.
Please note this is a vegetarian residence and not suitable for people who's dietary needs require meat, so be sure you are comfortable to go without meat during your stay. This arrangement has not suited people who eat a lot of meat normally because they miss it after a week or two!

Volunteers must have advanced English, the routine can change daily so understanding English is very important. Also for safety reasons there is sometimes the need for quick explanations.

Volunteers must have their own health insurance before making travel arrangements.

My boyfriend and I work from home and need our home to be quiet, this means you are free to relax as you please in your own rooms or common areas, watch movies with your cabin mates or walk/cycle (we have 3 bikes here) to the local traditional pub for a nice Guinness. We are close to canals, forests and country lanes. We have a covered decking area where in the summer you can cook, enjoy a bottle of wine and stay warm in the evenings. There are buses to Dublin, Galway and everywhere from the local village, as well as our regular travels to Dublin where we can give you a lift. As you can probably tell so far, we are looking for peaceful souls who are happy in nature, independent and most of all, excited by learning about animals and how to care for them.

Diva the goat was retired from Dublin Zoo, we have a great relationship with them and have visited behind the scenes with volunteers to observe their training techniques with elephants and wolves.
