Our names are Nathaniel and Andrea. We are sharing our time between being in Iowa (Nate's parents farm), Winnipeg (our community house and permanent address) and in a small northern Mexican village in the mountains of Tamaulipas in a house that has been in Andrea's family for generations. It is a quiet yet well-serviced community (<5000 people) that lies beside the main mountain highway between Tamaulipas and San Luis Potosí and located almost exactly on the Tropic of Cancer. It's the natural habitat of the Great Green Macaw which populate the pueblo in noisy pairs and home of the "Blue Hole" swimming spot. It's also along the route of the Monarch Butterfly migration. Nearby are rivers, El Cielo biological reserve (2hr), La Pesca beach (2.75hr), Ciudad Victoria (45min) and always-incredible tacos (1min). Our little town boasts the only party-independent mayor in the state (at the point of this writing) and three community squares where folks host markets during the day and hang out, eat, play volleyball and chat in the evenings. There is also always a soccer games being played at any of the small fields in town.

Jaumave is a great place to learn about small-town life in Mexico. You will encounter a different pace of life in the small mountain community and you can begin to learn how the people relate to one another. You will be able to participate in local sports and activities as well. We can dive into the intersecting socio-political relationships that make Mexico what it is in relationship to the rest of Northern and Latin America. We can also share with you some of what makes food in Mexico so special by teaching you how to make tortillas and helping you experience the wonderful food traditions of the area.

We will welcome you into our Spanish/English bilingual family and help you to practice your skills in either language. We have lived all over North America and have travelled to many parts of the world. We are always open to hearing and sharing experiences, telling stories and talking about our global life together.

Here, you still get access to internet, but disconnecting is made so much easier by the fact that being outside is so accessible, appealing and there are always little tasks to do.

So, if you are looking for a chance to disconnect and be present, practice/learn Spanish in a bilingual home, do some projects and experience life in small town Mexico, this is the place for you!

We are starting various rehabilitation projects on a 1.5 hectare homestead on the east side of town. We have begun to plant fruit and nut trees and to rebuild a once-beautiful garden space. We hope to host many guests as we do renovations in the house, install a solar system, renovate a swimming pool and fountain, build a chicken coop and imagine and build shareable outdoor facilities of various types. We'd also love to build up a composting site that perhaps other townspeople can input into and benefit from, grow a big part of our own food, and care for animals.

You would be sharing a house with us. At times we'd be back and forth between Victoria and Jaumave, but the house has all the amenities one may need. Depending on how many of you there are, you could potentially be sharing a room. All washrooms are shared. We generally gather together for meals and take turns preparing food. We will provide food from the local grocery for our meals together. Sometimes shopping is also a shared task. We will also take you out for tacos and gorditas at nearby restaurants.

Well-trained dogs are welcomed at our place. Friendly cats can also be considered. Note that there is a lot of local fauna at our place! Local dogs and cats often sneak into the property and wonder around. Fixed/spayed animals would be advised.
