A Simple, Self-Sufficient Life in the Thai Countryside

Hey there! I’m Nok, a Thai pharmacist living in the Netherlands, but my heart is here in Sisaket, where I’m building a peaceful retreat focused on simple living, self-sufficiency, and sharing.

This isn’t a resort, a homestay, or a free accommodation—it’s an ongoing project, an experiment to see if a small community can thrive by sharing resources, skills, and responsibilities. The vision is to create a place where everyone gives as much as they take, allowing the project to sustain itself without relying on money alone.

    🌱 The Future Vision
I dream of expanding this into a small village—3-4 simple homes where people can stay, contribute, and experience a meaningful, self-sufficient lifestyle. A place where people don’t just pass through, but grow, share, and support each other.

But here’s the reality: I am funding this project alone. If people only take without giving back, it won’t survive. I’m not a wealthy investor—I’m just someone trying to build a dream. If you choose to stay here, please understand that this place can only continue if everyone contributes.

🏡 What You Need to Know Before Coming

1️⃣ This is a Shared Space, Not a Free Stay
    • You are welcome to enjoy what others before you have planted, built, or cared for.
    • But in return, you must contribute—leave something behind for the next people, and for me, as the one keeping this project alive.
    • If you only take and don’t give back, this place will not survive.

2️⃣ Help Keep This Place Alive

This retreat depends on everyone playing their part. You’ll be expected to:
✅ Water the plants and care for the garden 🌿
✅ Help take care of the ducks and geese 🦆
✅ Keep things clean—don’t leave a mess for others 🧹
✅ Be mindful of water and electricity—resources aren’t unlimited! 🚰💡

    3️⃣ Water & Electricity – Use Wisely!

💧 Water runs on solar power – Please use it carefully.
⚡ Electricity is NOT solar-powered – air conditioning is very expensive so please use fans.

4️⃣ Be Responsible for Your Own Mess
    • My mother sometimes visits to water the plants, but she is NOT a maid. Please respect her and do not leave things for her to clean up.
    • Everyone should leave the space better than they found it.

    5️⃣ 2-Week Stay to Start
    • Everyone starts with a maximum 2-week stay.
    • If you contribute, respect the space, and share in the vision, you may be invited to stay longer.
    • If you only take without giving back, you will be asked to leave.

    🌏 Why Stay Here?

✔️ You want to slow down and experience rural Thai life.
✔️ You enjoy working with nature, animals, or DIY projects.
✔️ You believe in sharing, sustainability, and giving back.
✔️ You’re looking for a peaceful place to reflect, away from the city.

    But if you’re looking for…
❌ A free place to stay without helping.
    ❌ A resort or a serviced accommodation.
❌ Someone to take care of everything for you.

Then this isn’t the right place.

    💌 How to Apply

If this sounds like your kind of experience, send me a message with:
1️⃣ Who you are and where you’re from.
2️⃣ Why you want to stay here.
3️⃣ What skills or help you can offer.
4️⃣ How long you’d like to stay.

I’m looking for givers, not just takers. If you believe in this vision, I’d love to welcome you.

🌱 A Note from the Heart

“This place isn’t built with just bricks and wood—it’s built with dreams, kindness, and the people who make it come alive. Every seed planted, every meal shared, and every small act of care adds to its spirit. If you stay here, you’re not just a guest—you’re part of the journey.”

I just want to keep living my dream. If you choose to come, please be considerate. Let’s build something meaningful together.

    - Nok 💛

Here is the guide from my workawayers:

    Welcome to Nok’s!

    Handbook for Guests and Workawayers

    Edited by Nok

Brought to you by Workawayers Kat, Cat, and Rob!

Welcome to Nok’s Workaway near Sisaket! We have written this guide to help other workers/guests get settled in and acquainted with the property before arriving, to ensure you can enjoy your time here as much as possible! Nok is working extremely hard to create a beautiful space and generously allows workers/guests to stay here in exchange for flexible working hours—you can manage your own time to complete tasks responsibly. Please ensure that you are doing all you can to help Nok and communicate with Nok or Tui if you need something. They are always happy to help and chat.

Nok loves to hear from the workers, know what they have been up to, and receive pictures and videos as updates! She lives and works in the Netherlands, so she is 6 hours behind, but she responds as quickly as she can.

    Getting Here and Getting Around

    Traveling from Bangkok:
There are various trains, including night trains, from Bangkok, which take around 8-10 hours. We recommend booking tickets in advance via 12Go.asia or dticket.railway.co.th. The 2nd class sleeper with air conditioning is around 630 THB. If you’re unfamiliar with Thai travel, we recommend Train 23 (Rapid Service from Krung Thep Terminal). A 1st class sleeper is around 1,500 THB. There is also a cheaper 3rd class option, but it does not always guarantee a seat and may be uncomfortable for long hours.

You will arrive at Sisaket station early in the morning. Contact the trusted taxi driver the day before you travel to avoid being stranded at the station:

    Local Transport:
    • Grab works in Sisaket city but is not always available for pickups from Nok’s. It’s best to arrange a ride with the local taxi driver.
    • Bicycle: Nok and the Workawayers contributed to purchasing a bicycle for Workawayers to use. You can explore the area and shop for groceries.
    • Motorcycle: Tui allows Workawayers to use her motorcycle, but you must cover your own fuel costs.
    • Carpool with Tui: She drives to Sisaket daily, so you may be able to coordinate a ride with her.

Communication Tip: Since most locals don’t speak English, Google Translate is highly recommended.

    Keys and Security
    • There is a lanyard with keys for the property.
    • Padlock on the main gate – Lock it at night.
    • House 1: Lock the gate from the inside at night and unlock it in the morning.
    • House 2: Lock the gate from the outside and take the key with you.
    • Cupboards in the kitchen have padlocks. Code: 387 (Contains cleaning supplies and handy items).
    • Always lock the gate when leaving the property.

    Daily Chores & Responsibilities

    ✅ Watering Plants:
    • An automatic water system will be installed soon. For now, you need to water plants using a hose, focusing on those that do not receive enough water.
    • Make sure plants are soaked thoroughly as the weather is hot and dry.
    • Cover plants with straw or hay to retain moisture.

    ✅ Toilets:
    • 🚫 DO NOT flush toilet paper, tissues, or feminine hygiene products!
    • Use the bathroom bin and empty it frequently.

    ✅ Water & Electricity Conservation:
    • Electricity is NOT powered by solar panels. Nok pays for it monthly, so please use it cautiously to avoid unnecessary waste.
    • Be mindful of not leaving lights, fans, or appliances running when not in use.

    ✅ Garbage Disposal:
    • Take full garbage bins to Tui’s house.
    • Ensure dogs cannot access the trash—place it somewhere high or secure.
    • In the future, the municipality will provide garbage bins in front of the house for easier disposal.

    ✅ Cleaning:
    • Keep the kitchen tidy. Wash dishes immediately after use.
    • Empty compost bin near the vegetable patch.
    • Sweep and mop the communal areas.

    ✅ Gardening:
    • Check if plants need propping up with bamboo sticks.
    • Weed the garden regularly.

    ✅ Tool Safety:
    • Only use tools you feel comfortable with.
    • If unsure, ask Nok or Tui for guidance.

    ✅ Goose Care (NEW!)
    • Feed the geese regularly.
    • Clean the goose pen and remove waste.
    • Change the bedding (rice husks) frequently.
    • Use the old bedding as fertilizer for plants.
    • Change the water regularly. If it turns dark, use it to water the plants.

    ✅ Keeping Bugs Away:
    • Use mosquito coils for a few hours to deter mosquitoes.
    • Avoid using bright lights at night to prevent attracting bugs.
    • Recommended bug spray: Thai bug lotion (available in lavender or citrus scent).

    Kitchen & Cooking
    • Fridges: Keep all open food inside the fridge to avoid ants and bugs.
    • Cooking Equipment: Electric cooker, charcoal grill, kettle, pots, and pans.
    • Rice Cooking Tip: Use the absorption method in a metal pot with a lid.
    • Grocery Shopping:
    • Big C in Sisaket is a large supermarket.
    • Local markets offer fresh produce at lower prices.
    • 7-Eleven & Lotus’s carry essentials and are open 24/7 near the train station.
