Descripción
Before you read further we are only looking for a female workawayer and preferably 25 or older and with some experience in cleaning/household 😊
We are a family of five: Barbara 35 years old, Valdimar 39 years old and our three daughters, Lilja 3 years old, Ísabella 7 years old and Birta 15 years old (she doesn't live with us). We offer a friendly home and good atmosphere.
Barbara works with mentally ill people and Valdimar is a school principle and also a fishing guide.
Our kids are pretty easy going and polite.
We have had 7 workawayer staying with us before and it has been great.

We live in a quiet neighbourhood in the beautiful town of Akureyri in Iceland. Within a 10 minutes drive we have a great skiing/snowboarding area (in the winter). Beautiful nature, outdoor swimming pools and northern lights during winter time. We are willing to show workaway some nice places in the region of our home town. Close to our town we have many rivers and lakes who are good for fishing and in our fjord we have great whale whatching companys. Close to our home town there are also beautiful and popular hiking trails. We will do our best to show you our culture and interesting places.

We would like a general help with the household, cleaning the house, laundry, cooking and maybe some child caring if our girls are up to it 😊 We are looking to keep the workaway as long as possible to be part of the family. So ideal time would be at least 1-3 months.

We live in a fairly new house with three bedrooms. In the bedroom you'll be staying in there's a very comfy king size bed, a closet and a drawer you can put you clothes in. We offer a wifi and all meals.

We encourage workaway to use their time off to get to know our culture and visit interesting places. We have many beautiful waterfalls close by, historical places, great skiing/snowbording area in only 10 min away. There are good hiking trails in our area and our town has many things workaway can do like coffee houses, cinemas, library, musik halls, gym and other places. Our town offers a free bus so it's easy to get around.

My time with Barbara, Maddi, Lilja and Isabella was fantastic, I really enjoyed it, and found it very hard to leave. I stayed with them for five weeks in November and December, and could have stayed a lot longer. Barbara and Maddi made me part of their family, welcomed me into their home, and made me feel comfortable from the very first day. They… read more are both very kind and warm hearted and their children are very sweet. I had so much fun playing with them.

Their house is on the edge of town, with a stunning view over the fjord. There are also some beautiful walks in the area. However, even though it feels close to the countryside, it is very easy and fast to get into the centre of town. There is a free regular bus down the road that only takes ten minutes into town, and the thermal pool is close by. Barbara and Maddi were super helpful and happy to give me lifts into town when I wanted to get an early bus to go away for the day, for example. They also helped me with all other questions I had or advice I needed and were happy to organise things for me, since I don’t speak any Icelandic. I had a lovely quiet room, and they gave me my own space. They took me to family gatherings and birthdays, and to their grandparents house to make the famous Icelandic laufabrauð.

The work was easy and I could organise my time as I wanted. It was mainly cleaning and tidying the house, which isn’t that big, so it was easily done. I would help with dinner preparation and tidying afterwards, look after the children, and do other bits and bobs around the house. It felt more like doing things you would usually do at your own home as well.

Barbara and Maddi are lovely people, and so are their kids.They are kind and warm hearted and were always ready to help me with everything, they never gave me the feeling that it was too much or that it bothered them, even amongst the intensity and business of everyday life. And they are both great communicators, that is one of the things I cherished the most. They are straightforward and kind in their communication, and at the same time very thoughtful and patient. I really enjoyed our conversations around the dinner table, Maddi sharing stories from the sea and the fishermen and Icelandic life in general. Their daughters are both lovely, Lilja is a bundle of joy and action, and Isabella is so sweet, full of laughter and cheek. I loved spending time with both their kids, and laughing with them, and despite my lack of Icelandic, Isabella and I had a great time playing together, and even going sledging together after the crazy snowstorm at the beginning of December.

Saying goodbye to everyone was quite emotional for me, and I am very grateful for the wonderful time I had with them in this beautiful place up North. They will always have a place in my heart, and I miss them already.

I can recommend anyone who wants to get a taste of Icelandic life in the North to go and stay with them. I am looking forward to coming back to visit sometime when the days are long and the nights are bright….
