Hello!
We are a vegan Animal Sanctuary for rescued farm animals, situated in the gorgeous countryside of Somerset, South West England. We currently have over 100 animals, including goats, sheep, pigs, horses, hens, ferrets and others, who have come to us from horrible backgrounds, and who will now live out the rest of their lives in peace. We manage the sanctuary ourselves, with the help of our incredible workawayers, and a few regular local volunteers.

- we are only looking for volunteers who can stay for 2 months or longer, please do not apply for less than this time
- we are extremely busy with the animals on the sanctuary and we don't have much time for admin!! We therefore cannot reply to all of the messages we receive. If you do not get a response, we are really sorry but we cannot host you at this time. Thank you for understanding

You will have a unique insight into life in Somerset, a beautiful part of England. The land here is really peaceful, calming and special. Many people who come to visit us leave with a lasting sense of relaxation.
You also get the chance to hang out with and get to know all of our beautiful animals!

This host is a registered charity in the UK and is looking for help with their charity project. Guidance on charity worker sponsorship by a UK registered charity, can be found here.
Ayuda
We need workawayers to help us with the daily routine here on the sanctuary. Getting to know the animals, bringing them out of their stables each morning, cleaning out their stables, general maintenance around the place...and when you get the chance, spending time playing and socialising with the animals. There is always something to be done here!!
Please note that this is a very independent role. We are always here to support and provide full training, but this is not a place for those who are looking to socialise a lot with humans - however, there are lots and lots of animals to spend as much time with as you like!
We also have 4 energetic dogs, who are always asking for a ball to be thrown...

Workaway accommodation is either a room in a converted barn or a small caravan near the sanctuary yard - both of which have a fridge, electric or gas hob and electricity. There is a shower and toilet available to use in the house.
You will be provided with a food budget to prepare your own meals - we will do a supermarket run with you once a week if you do not have a car.
Please note - we are a vegan household and do not allow any meat, dairy or other animal products onto the sanctuary, in respect of the animals who live here

Our place is in a rural location, about 5 minutes drive from Wells. We have bicycles to borrow if you would like to. From there you can visit Glastonbury, a really unique, spiritual and fantastic town! There is also a bus to the city of Bristol, which has lots of culture and great nightlife. There are lots of amazing walks around the area too.

Staying at this farm was absolutely beautiful. Despite arriving in the winter, I totally enjoyed every single day. Somerset is a gorgeous region and the Sanctuary made me feel very peaceful. Everyone there has a big heart and is very welcoming. I stayed at a gorgeous caravan named Doris ;) It was dreamy and very comfortable. I could see a beautiful starry sky every night while being surrounded by nature, it was amazing.
The tasks demanded a lot of energy and physical activity and I loved it because I love tobe active and I am an outdoors person. The work felt right for me. I would definitely recommend this to anyone that is very energetic and doesn't mind getting dirty. :) For sure, there were some harsh moments due to the inclement weather, but even that was fun and interesting to experience (haha yes the mud was fun!). The tasks include feeding the animals, cleaning stables, nursing them sometimes, moving things and animals around, putting them to bed, and checking that everything is going smoothly.
I did not want to leave :( Initially, I was going to stay 2 months but I ended up staying almost 3 and I am coming back sometime in the future! I miss everyone so much but I am grateful for having made these connections, having interacted with all the animals and, especially having had the opportunity to help while enjoying a very peaceful and fulfilling day to day. It was such an inspiration to see how Bex, Katherine, and Teresa ran the Sanctuary and to feel all that love and effort. I look forward to creating one place like this farm in the future. :)

I stayed with Bex, Katherine, and Teresa for around 10 weeks (19 Feb - 03 May 2023) which passed in the blink of an eye. I could write forever and still not be able to fully express just how amazing my time here was. It felt like being in a different world entirely - an infinitely better one!
There was a lot to learn but the training was great… read more and they were always contactable if there were any questions or emergencies. The profile is very accurate in saying that this is an independent role - so you get to spend lots of quiet time with the animals and your thoughts while you work which is very calming and an absolute privilege. I did also have a blast with the other workawayer when we were together though!!
The work was never unreasonable, and the hours were usually split up throughout the day. Even first thing in the morning in the rain and mud, as soon as I saw the first animal I couldn't help but be in a good mood. It was so peaceful to chill with the animals in my free time - my personal recommendation is to watch the hens investigate the yard!
It's incredibly fulfilling work, and just getting to know the animals and knowing that they'll be safe and cared for forever definitely pulls at your heartstrings. Waving goodbye to rescued hens as they leave with their new families to experience love and safety after narrowly escaping death - that's unforgettable.
I cannot praise Bex, Katherine, and Teresa enough as hosts and as people in general. Despite dealing with heartbreaking situations and working around the clock, they are still unbelievably kind and welcoming. It was my first time being in a group of other vegans, and it was really comforting and validating being surrounded by such compassionate and caring people. You have created a sanctuary for humans as well as animals, and my time here will stay with me forever.
Thanks so much again for having me, I miss you all!! :'(

My two month stay at this farm was just wonderful. I was immediately received warmly and felt immediately welcome. I'd even say Bex, Katherine and Teresa are the most hospitable people I've ever met. Bex explained all the tasks to me very understanding and patiently. It was never made to feel that it was bad to make mistakes, but it was handled… read more very understandingly.
The work itself is just beautiful. On the one hand, because you can spend a lot of time with all the lovable animals, but also because the daily physical work is very good to clear your mind. You quickly notice that all animals have their own unique character and everyone is very lovable for themselves. You also have plenty of free time to explore the beautiful cities such as Bath, Glastonbury or Bristol and London is also easily accessible by train. Or you decide to rest and do nothing at all. This is also not a problem, since you have a lot of privacy.
It is also wonderful to chat with Bex, Katherine or Teresa and you just have to like them. You can see that they have a great passion for their animals and give everything to offer them a beautiful home. But also to make it as beautiful as possible to you.
I hope to have the opportunity to come back one day because I miss it already. Thank you for everything! <3

I actually stayed here back in August of 2022 and had such a rewarding time. The hosts are so lovely and go above and beyond to make your stay comfortable. They have really made a special safe space here for humans and animals and I learnt so much about the animals and their beautiful personalities! A lot of the time you will be working on your own but there are also plenty of times that you will have a chance to work with other day volunteers or workawayers.

I had a beautiful experience staying at the animal sanctuary. Thank you so much to Bex, Katherine and Teresa for making it such a wonderful and welcoming place to be. I have never known such hardworking people, and to also have time to run an animal sanctuary is just incredible!
The sanctuary is full of such fun and lovable animals all with… read more cheeky personalities. It was lovely to be around so many different animals, and I now have a new love for goats, chickens and especially ferrets who I could cuddle all day!
Waking up and feeding the animals in the morning was such a fun job and didn't ever get boring. There is plenty of work to keep you busy, and you will often want to do extra jobs just to spend time with the animals!
I stayed here for 3 months in the caravan, and Bex was so wonderful making sure I stayed warm over the winter months.
I really enjoyed my time here and met other lovely volunteers who also made the experience so much more memorable.
I will definitely be back again as I'm already missing the animals and everyone at the sanctuary.

I stayed for 2 months which was way too short, I had planned to stay much longer but for personal reasons I had to leave and the girls were so incredibly understanding and supportive. What an incredible year of my life. I originally came for 6 weeks and just fell in love with the place, the animals and the humans too. Its so difficult to properly sum up what my time there meant.
Bex, katherine & Teresa have created a haven for animals that would otherwise have faced very tragic endings. To be a part of such magnificent work… read more is a privilege, and to be able to bond with not just the animals, but the humans that have made it all possible, was something I'll always hold in my heart. The work is hard (especially in the winter) but extremely rewarding and it also means you can cancel your gym membership. The animals have such individual personalities that there's never for one instant a dull moment. The sanctuary is peaceful, warm and so filled with love.
Bex is so hard working, patient and knowledgable. She became more than a friend during my time there. It was a home that I had been looking for and I'll always cherish my time spent there.
Thank you Bex, Katherine & Teresa for making me feel like I was home. And of course a big thanks to Benny for always being on rat watch. Kizzy for supervising all of my work. Franky for barking so loudly she keeps you on constant alert. And Sparky for being a beautiful, obsessive lunatic. I miss all of you, and of course every single animal.
I really could not recommend PTF enough. It is a place filled with incredible souls xx

Words just cannot express how grateful we are to have had Pullmayra in our lives for the last year or so. She has had such a huge, lasting impact on the Sanctuary, and the lives of all of the animals and humans here. She is hard-working, extremely trustworthy, full of passion and has the best can-do attitude we have ever experienced!
Her role… read more here has involved working hands-on with animals that she previously had no experience with, and she has jumped right in and learnt on the spot. Fixing things, cleaning things, going above and beyond to offer the best possible environment for the animals under her care here.
She is a genuine person with a HUGE heart. It has been an absolute pleasure to share time and space with her, and she has become a lifelong friend (and she is welcome here whenever!!). Cannot recommend highly enough - you'd be very, very lucky to have her as your Workawayer!

I only spent a week at this lovely sanctuary, as i was unexpectedly free, but got accepted as a 'last minute' volunteer. I learned a lot in my short stay and was able to cover the other workawayers days off, thanks to a really clear list and a couple of days to learn the ropes. I spent 2 months at the sanctuary and can truly say I had a wonderful time. Teresa, Katherine and Bex are such warm and welcoming people - their kindness and openness really made me feel at home from the moment I arrived. They have created a small vegan haven for rescued animals and work so hard to keep all the residents happy and healthy.
The… read more beginning of my stay overlapped with another lovely workawayer's last few days, which was very helpful when learning the ropes (and everyone's names!). The main responsibilities included letting the animals out in the morning, feeding them, topping up water, mucking out, keeping an eye on everyone during the day, and getting them all in again at dinner time. There are always other jobs to be done too, for example during my stay I gave visitors tours, did some gardening, fixed fences and delegated jobs to other local volunteers. I learnt so much about in such a short period of time. I also had plenty of leisure time - on days off I often visited Wells (the nearest town with all sorts of amenities) and went for walks in the stunning local countryside. Other times I would spend my free time just chilling with the animals, they are great company - some of my fondest memories are playing on the trampoline with the goats and sunbathing with the sheep!
The accommodation was perfect; a cosy converted barn complete with everything I needed. A wonderful place to retreat to in the evenings for a warm meal and some downtime!
Anyone lucky enough to get to be hosted at the sanctuary will have an amazing time providing you are prepared to roll up your sleeves and get stuck in. Like with anything you get back what you give. Thank you again to all the wonderful souls I got the chance to meet, both human and nonhuman, and for all the opportunities I was given. I'll be back as soon as I'm able! x

Katherine and Teresa have turned their home into a place of peace for unwanted animals or those rescued from slaughter. The love they have for their animals is evident and in return the animals which have spent some time there are exceptionally calm and friendly. The work is nice and not difficult, but you do have to be a responsible and hard… read more working person as you are responsible for the animals welfare whilst there. You're also supported in taking on extra projects if you would like (for example, building a goat climbing frame, and creating enrichment for the pigs).
Katherine and Teresa were very accommodating, allowing me to bring my own dog with me and respecting her current need for space from other dogs, and also allowing me to stay in my campervan on the grounds. I also met some of their family and had a lovely meal in their home cooked by Bex, who is a professional vegan caterer! The four dogs along with all the other dogs that came to visit are lots of fun as well!
During my stay several new rescues came along, including some lambs, some piglets, and many, many chickens as part of a chicken save event. It was great working with the new arrivals and seeing their confidence grow, as well as providing medical care for the chickens.
This was my favourite workaway so far because of the wonderful atmosphere, the huge personalities of the animals, and the welcome I got from the humans. I'm already planning to go back!

Betty is an absolute DREAM to host. She's compassionate, open, honest, and a downright lovely human being. She's also incredibly capable and a super hard-worker. We felt 100% comfortable leaving all the animals in her care - she is trustworthy and intelligent. She is now part of our sanctuary family and we hope to see her again many times :) :)

I've done quite a few workaway and being at the sanctuary was the best! I stayed for 2 months and it was so hard to leave. The working schedule is flexible, the accommodation is lovely, the place awesome.. But more than that the people and animals are fantastic.

Everyone is so well cared for it is nice to see and help. I was also able to participate in chicken rescues which was tough but definitely powerful and I am so happy I could help a bit and see all those ladies on their first day toward a happy life.
I miss the crazy goats, grumpy Winnie, playful Coffee, ball addict dogs, fluffy sheep, adorable pigs, adventurous chickens, neddy horses and queen Suzie.

This sanctuary was my first experience as a workawayer and it was amazing! I spent 4 months here so I could see how everything around me changed along with the change of seasons, so different but always great. As I arrived during the winter, days were short and we had to concentrate the hours of work during the sunlight time. Even during the… read more colder days or those when it was raining, you could think it's hard to wake up early and go outside, but it really isn't. By the moment you remember there are some wonderful animals out there waiting for you to feed them and let them out of their stables, all your laziness automatically disappears. They are always super happy to see you and I assure you they make sure you notice that. Every single one of them is amazing, and it's fantastic getting to know each one with their personality, their preferences and their relationship with you and with the other animals too, they are a wonderful family! When the sun sets and you go back to the barn, which is your little house with your own kitchen and shower, it's also super nice to sit down next to the heater and enjoy a coffee. I then used to bring inside the lovely Coffee, the ferret, who is a great company and loves running from side to side of the barn and climbing to the top of everything he can, almost as much as he loves falling asleep between the door curtains. Anyway, as days get longer with the arrival of the spring, you can change your routine, take more breaks during your working time and spend more time between the animals and under the sun, you are the one who organizes your time, always respecting the times for feeding and letting the animals in and out of the stables, of course. As I spent here such a long time, I've experienced different ways of working, both with and without a partner. I would highlight my time with Toni, an amazing German girl who arrived the same day as I did and who I got along with so well. I think we made the perfect team, and sharing with her our first steps learning how to do the tasks in the sanctuary was the perfect start. When she left I had to learn again how to do the tasks in the better way, as my routine without her changed more than I expected, but I got used to it soon too, you just need some mental planning of the tasks and, most important, you learn from your continuous little mistakes, you never stop learning! Also, you always have the help of the amazing dogs who are wandering around the garden and know so well the place where every animal should be, so they are a great help too! Every one of them is wonderful, Bennie is always bringing you a ball and asking you to throw it, Franky is crazy about water and always notices when you open the tap, Sparky is obsessed with the chicken and the ferret and spends the whole day looking at them and, of course, Kizzy, who never wants to get inside the house so she is most of the day outside and became kind of my best friend there, she even came to sleep with me to the barn sometimes! I wouldn't want to forget talking about Katherine and Teresa who are lovely people and are always available and willing to help in case you have any doubt about your tasks and they also listen to your ideas and make them possible in the sanctuary. I will always remember all of the birthdays and Sunday lunches as much as the Monopoly evenings with Ethan :) I wish you all the best, I highly recommend this experience!

Jason and Denise were an absolute dream to host. Super easy to communicate with, reliable, trustworthy, and downright amazing people. They brought a beautiful compassionate, capable energy to our sanctuary, and helped us in ways we never could have expected. We were very sad to see them leave.

I lived there with another girl, she… read more was also a workawayer together in a barn and we had a own kitchen and a bathroom, like a small flat:) Our daily routine was to care to the animals to feed them, to bring them out and in, to make the stables. In the afternoon we did other jobs outside. The main point was to the spend time together with the animals 😍😊😍 there are so lovely and they love you too, you can see it🥰🌱💕 they are so happy, when you are cuddle them and play with them🙈

Wow, where to begin! 🙏😍👍😊 what an amazing experience! From my first contact with Katherine, Teresa and Bex, I knew I’d found the place to hone my animal care skills and get stuck in...sometimes literally (rain and mud)...but what joy and bliss interacting with the animals and my hard working first-time Workaway hosts. Firstly let me thank you all… read more from the bottom of my heart for your generosity, kindness and helpfulness over the last 3 weeks and for driving me all over visiting Glastonbury and Wells, the occasional amazing suppers, carnival, coffees and teas in your cosy kitchen/snug!
My accommodation was a converted barn, warm and comfortable with an amazing mezzanine bedroom, food provided for the little kitchen, comfy chair for reading and electric fires to keep warm...all perfect!
My job was varied but mainly feeding the animals morning and at dusk, which included opening their stables to exterior pens and vice-verca in the evenings (winter time schedule now), mucking out if needed, replacing straw and checking water, etc. fence mending, clearing up, playing with dogs! I could go on and on but I will leave it for others to experience this sanctuary in the heart of Somerset! 😌 I will be back for sure!!
