Our Community Center is a non-profit, non-governmental organization funded by its Spanish language school. All of our proceeds return directly to the community through our educational programs for children, youth and adults. Our programs involve teaching English, art, Spanish reinforcement, mathematics, science and sport for children. The children we serve often come from families who have been marginalized by poverty, indigenous Mayan heritage, or rural backgrounds, and many lack access to the privilege of a primary school education even though six years are theoretically provided free of charge under the Guatemalan system.
For 2019, we have following opportunities for volunteers:
1) Teaching English to students (min 1 month + min basic spanish level)
2) Teaching Maths, art, music, science or sport (min 1 month + min intermediate spanish level)
3) Longer term volunteer positions available: International Coordinator and Project Manager
Our foreign volunteers provide creative, thoughtful instruction and activities which these children would otherwise not receive. To that end we seek dedicated and enthusiastic individuals who are motivated to give back to some of the most disenfranchised communities in Quetzaltenango. If you are interested in learning about grassroots social development work through education, want to gain valuable international teaching experience, and improve your Spanish through working with kids, our Community Center has a place for you!
There are many different activities for volunteers during the week, such as cooking lessons, salsa lessons, day trips to exciting sites around Xela such as hot springs, volcanos, lake Atitlan, etc.
Unfortunatly, as a non-profit organization we cannot offer food or accomodation, however, we do offer high quality and affordable homestay opportunites, and can assist you in finding alternative low-cost accommodation. We have families that collaborate with us, offer accommodation and food with an affordable cost,
When you write us for more information you must send an alternative and direct email to contact. The goal is to help avoid mail abuse for users.
