It was wonderful getting to know Pim while he was with us. He has many talents from gardening knowledge, to photography, to painting, etc. He was always willing to tackle whatever tasks we had for him. Sometimes the tasks changed day by day from what was originally planned, but he was always flexible though it may have been out of his comfort
… read more zone.
Both of us enjoyed working side by side with Pim for different projects. He is very innovative and, I (Dottie), especially appreciated the ideas he shared about gardening – many we have adopted. He seemed to thrive outdoors and when he was asked to plant some papayas, He went all out and planted so many that we named one area “Pim’s Papaya Plantation!” What a wonderful memory!
Another very important reminder that Pim was here is the painting he did on one of our shear walls of flowing lava. It certainly shows his artistic ability!
Pim gave us the courtesy of letting us know when we needed to attend to something in the apartment or grounds and kept us informed of his whereabouts and return times when he was out somewhere. He ran an international marathon in Hilo during the time he stayed here. He is a great networker. He readily shared his excitement about some of the people he met during his personal time. It was fascinating to see the portfolio of wonderful photos he took. We enjoyed his stories about his home country, The Netherlands.
Pim fit in well with us and our Family. He joined us for our weekly Family Dinner and Game Nights. Our family members also had fun chatting and laughing with him, especially while playing the game, Farkle. Tim had an enjoyable time with him visiting Volcanoes National Park while Kilauea Volcano was erupting fountains at the time. They got some great pictures!
Bubbles, Ziggy, Fonzie, and Beans (our cats) sure enjoyed his company as well. He was always kind to them. We often saw him scratching furry ears.
We highly recommend this multi-talented and hardworking man for future Workaway positions or other endeavors.

My stay in Hawai'i at Dottie and Tim was an amazing experience. For years it has been my dream to visit Hawai'i and I'm glad I picked Dottie and Tim for my first stay on the big island. They opened there arms and welcomed me in their ohana. Even though I was a bit stressed out from my flight, they made sure I was comfortable at arrival. I have
… read more many nice memories from playing farkle to working together in the garden and meeting with friends/family and peeling cacaobeans. I was invited for 2 birthdays and wish I would have stayed longer to have my own birthday there as well. I got some good tips and feedback on questions I had about the island and other islands. I was able to trade in some work hours and go to Kauai and O'ahu for 4 days which was awesome! And I got to meet Yuanzhen from China!
They have a really cool house with lot's of lanai's and the apartment I stayed in was the best and I was able to cook my own meals and drive a car which was very nice. It gave a lot of freedom and there is a lot of nice places to drive to like Hilo, Volcanoes N Park, Laupahoehoe, Kona, and getting groceries ofcourse.
Hawaii is also what locals call the big island and it's way bigger then the other islands and that's also what I like about it. The variety in climates is nice. One moment it rains in Hilo and then you drive 10 min up north up the coast and it is sunny. Or you go up Saddle Road and it get's colder untill reaching Kona which is warmer again. And I saw multiple volcanic eruptions and those are special to see! Also Tim and Katie took me to Carlsmith Beach to go snorkeling and I saw beautiful fishes and seaturtles! The Green Sand beach is interesting but the pickuptrucks taking you there are a wild experience.
My work consisted of gardening like clearing weeds, feeding the chickens, woodworking with Tim for the house and creating new garden beds with lava rocks for the many papayas I planted, called Pim's Papaya Plantation haha. And I got to paint one of there walls into flowing lava! Bonus things are pollinating vanilla, harvasting honey, cacaobeans and eating the fruits from the garden.
I chose to work early at 7:30 so I had more time to explore the island later and that was also less hot that way. I learned more about gardening with exotic plants and used some of my knowledge and ideas as well and it was fun to think of ideas with Dottie.
I'm grateful for this experience and I will be back for sure because of Tim and Dottie and all the nice people I met and the love I have for Hawai'! I recommend staying!

Tim and Dottie were incredibly gracious hosts. I had so much fun getting to know them and their home, which is a beautiful piece of land with the friendliest animals. You'll love their cats, chickens, and whatever fruit is in season! You'll be lucky enough to have an entire mini apartment to yourself and there's so much to see. We really enjoyed getting to know Ethan while he was with us. He is a multi-talented man who seems to be able to juggle several things. Ethan was especially helpful in caring for our chickens. He showed us how to cut chicken wing feathers without harming the chicken. That kept the “renegade” chickens from flying over the tall fence so they could not get in our main yard area. This resulted in protecting our trees and other plants from the damaging digging that chickens do.
Ethan was willing to share information and talents. One of the special things Ethan does is to make sourdough bread. He showed us how to make the bread and we even still have a loaf or two in the freezer.
Ethan gave us the courtesy of letting us know when we needed to attend to something in the apartment or grounds and kept us informed of his whereabouts and return times when he was out somewhere.
Ethan fit in well with us and our Family. He joined us for our weekly Family Dinner and Game Nights. Our family members enjoyed time chatting with him and comparing knowledge about healthy life practices. Ethan has a plethora of knowledge about that subject.
Bubbles, Ziggy, Fonzie, and Beans (our cats) sure enjoyed his company as well. He was always kind to them. We often saw him scratching furry ears. Ethan said he enjoyed all 4 cats, but he liked our old girl, Bubbles, the best.
We highly recommend this knowledgeable and hardworking young man for future Workaway positions.

My girlfriend (Charlotte) and I (Linus) were lucky enough to spend seven weeks with Dottie and Tim on Big Island, and it was truly an amazing and unforgettable experience!

… read more working. They both always had a joke on their lips. It was fascinating to learn from them and immerse ourselves more deeply in life in Hawaii. Our conversations with them were enriching and opened up new perspectives, which further emphasized our break from our European routines.
The work was varied and diverse. The large, green property was not just a workplace but also a place inviting exploration. There was always something new to do and discover, which ensured the days were never monotonous. From moving lava rocks to taking care of the chickens - everyday was different. A special highlight was the four cats that kept us company every day! Additionally, having the chance to drive a pickup truck, operate a chipper (which is now called Charlotte), plant papayas, or paint a house was truly unique.
Another big plus was the provided car, which allowed us to explore the island. Big Island is incredibly diverse, and thanks to the mobility, we were able to discover nearly every corner of this breathtaking island—from rugged volcanic landscapes to paradisiacal beaches. Each area has its own charm, and it was fantastic to experience this variety firsthand.
After finishing our university degrees, there couldn’t have been a better place to spend such an intensive and educational time. The combination of hard but fulfilling work, the unique nature, and the inspiring hosts makes this Workaway an absolute highlight. We are endlessly grateful for this experience and would recommend it to anyone looking for a special and wonderful stay in Hawaii.

Linus and Charlotte are wonderful Workawayers! They are confident individuals, always willing to tackle whatever we asked. Sometimes the tasks changed day by day from what was originally planned, but they were always flexible.
Both Linus and Charlotte are talented and innovative self-starters. They often were found out on the land digging and

It was fun having our special jokes, like naming a pineapple plant and the chipper. (We now have a very large pineapple plant named “Linus” and the chipper, which is a very strong machine, is named Charlotte!)
Whenever it was too rainy to be outside, they would improvise by doing some tasks under cover of the lanai or garage. They were great at helping organize the garage!
Linus and Charlotte are easy to trust. We felt confident in sharing our space with them. We always knew they had our best interests at heart. Our cats loved being around them and would follow them when they were working on the land. They took good care of our chickens as their first task every workday was to feed them.
Linus and Charlotte are kind, and thoughtful with wonderful senses of humor. They were always quick with a smile and we so enjoyed sharing funny stories and laughter with them. They fit in well with us and our family on several social occasions such as family game nights and dinners. We really enjoyed their laughter and wonderful sportsmanship! And the wonderful dishes they made and brought to dinner were so tasty!

Tim and Dottie,
My workaway stay l could write a book about, but let me start with a shorter version.
I would say the best word to describe Dottie and Tim as a couple is kind-hearted.
The first time we chatted on What's App, l felt a kindred spirit towards them. They made me feel welcomed and answered some of our questions.
The plan was l
… read more would go over first then my husband would come later because we own a business.
Dottie and Tim asked a friend, Laura, to pick me up and Laura also drove me acrossed the big island to their home.
My daily routine was on a sheet of paper and their were daily jobs, and jobs that l would do with Tim or Dottie.
When l had questions about specific jobs, l would receive clear and concise answers.
Dottie and Tim opened up their spiritual life to me and invited me to their church. I was welcomed warmly, by their spiritual community.
Dottie and Tim also invited me in the realm of their friendships. The people l met were open, friendly and caring.
Dottie and Tim took time out of their busy week and took me on some
excursions. A couple of things, we did were we went snorkeling and we also
went to see a volcano.
Dottie and Tim's extended family are exceptional. They welcomed me with open-arms and l ate, laughed and played games with them.
Dottie is an active listener and asked me questions to get to know me on a deeper level. But l loved hearing about her life stories, and her time working within the government. l will not spoil those stories, only to say fascinating. Dottie, made me feel comfortable from the beginning, and she was very patient when l was working with her. I felt like l was coming back to see an old friend from my college days she was so hospitable and encouraging.
Tim, l learned something from him everyday, and he is knowledgeable about so many things, from gardening to history and many other subjects.
Tim was also patient and when l did not understand something would show me again, a second time. I was fascinated how they make vanilla bean extract, and the tedious things they do to make a final product. Tim also was in the military like my hubby, so when he shared a few stories, l enjoyed hearing them.
Tim and Dottie have a rhythm of caring about each other and appreciation for the daily things in their lives.
I recommend them immensely as a host and hostess.
I was not going to talk about this subject because my grief is so fresh.
I was only able to stay two weeks my brother became ill, and died a week later, after l returned to the mainland. Dottie and Tim were so gracious about my feelings, during this sad time. They stopped their daily plans, and made sure l got to the airport back across the island. They also contacted Laura a very compassionate friend, and l stayed with her to catch my flight home, in the early morning. No words can describe how that made me feel at that time because I was feeling shock and numbness. But now as l ponder my thoughts, l am grateful for their love and support through this sad and difficult time.
They are great people and you would be blessed, if they welcome you in their home.Solo puedes ponerte en contacto con workawayers con membresías activas.

She is a great communicator – when she was unsure of something, she would ask questions. She is very open to suggestions for learning experiences and for making positive changes.
Shelly joined us for family dinner and “game night” and she fit right in. She was so kind to Bubbles, Ziggy, Fonzie, and Beans (our four cats.) They often followed her around the land.
Sadly, due to a family medical emergency, Shelly had to cut her time here short and return to the mainland in a hurry. She handled the stress of the impending trip and possible loss of a loved one with grace.
Shelly is very thorough at cleaning and left the apartment in excellent order, which helped us a lot.
We wholeheartedly recommend Shelly for any Workaway position and any other endeavors. We hope she is able to return here sometime.

Colin is very pleasant to be around and has a quick smile. We enjoyed many chats with him. He fit right in for “Game Night” with our family. Our 4 cats seemed comfortable with him and we often observed him petting and talking to them.
The apartment was kept and left very clean. Because we had other Workawayers from Europe arriving the same day Colin was scheduled to leave, he took extra care to ensure there was little to be done in cleaning the apartment other than sanitation.

Both Alyana and Koby are very kind and thoughtful. We loved hearing Alayna’s lovely voice as she sang or hummed to herself while working. They were always quick with a smile and we so enjoyed sharing funny stories and laughter with them. Our four cats loved being around them and would follow them when they were working on the land.
Alayna and Koby fit in well with us and our family on several social occasions. We really enjoyed having them join us on "Game Night." Our adult son (who is staying with us) spent countless hours in conversation with both of them. We often heard a lot of laughter coming from downstairs. Our 19 year old granddaughter became friends with them as well and spent time joining them in some adventures in their off time.
They experimented with cooking some items from the land and shared with us. Koby is very good at finding a recipe to use with something found on the land. He made an amazing coconut bread pudding using coconut meat and milk from those he cut down from the trees. He and Alayna even spent some of their personal time to process the coconuts for use.
We felt blessed to have gotten to know these two! We highly recommend this dynamic couple together or individually!

Dottie and Tim are fantastic hosts. From the very beginning of my stay they made me feel welcome and comfortable. The weather didn't cooperate as I had hoped, but they assured me that was normal since I had come during the rainy season. I was able to explore the beauty of the island and saw many beautiful sunrises from the nearby shoreline.
They also kindly invited me to their board game nights with their family and I was able to share some games I had brought with me. It was heartwarming to be included in the group fun!
The apartment they provided was spacious and comfortable. I had everything I needed and was able to make a couple grocery runs so that I could cook my meals and save money on eating out. Tim and Dottie were also eager to share fruit and produce grown on their property including coconuts, cacao, and lilikoi. Apple bananas were my favorite.

We could tell Colleen is a lover of animals because our cats took to her right away – even our youngest, more standoffish cat! (Actually, Colleen said that cat named Beans is her favorite).
Coleen is a wonderful conversationalist with a quick smile. We enjoyed many chats with her. And we enjoyed time playing games with her and loved learning one of her favorites that she brought with her. In fact, we purchased the game “Code Names” to have here after she left.
We highly recommend this talented and resourceful artist for her artwork or for many of her other talents.

One of our beautiful young hens was named by Michelle.
We could tell Michelle is a wonderful writer as she shared how she is in the process of authoring a book that will be helpful to other young people that are unsure of future careers. She befriended our granddaughter who graduated this year from High School on Kaua’I island and recently moved with her family to be near us. We believe Michelle has been a very positive influence for her. They spent a lot of time exploring the island together on Michelle’s off hours. It was so easy to see Michelle’s love for all living creatures. One of their trips in the Hilo area was to rescue two stray kittens.

Whenever it was too rainy to be outside, they would improvise by doing some tasks under cover of the lanai. As example, they removed the bark from poles that

Hermi is a talented electrician. He installed some outlets for us and advised on the solar program we were putting in. Vicky was so helpful with the projects on the land. Though I (Dottie) enjoy working with our Workawayers particularly on the land, when I had a reaction to something and became ill for about 10 days, I was unable to work. Vicky worked on her own, weeding and planting with Hermi sometimes helping when he wasn’t working with Tim.
Vicky and Hermi are easy to trust. We felt confident in sharing our space with them and leaving them to look after our home whenever we were away. We felt our home and animals were safe with them.
We were glad to brush up on the German language again and had so much fun sharing languages with them (although they both speak English very well). They seemed to enjoy learning some Hawaiian words from us too. Vicky and Hermi fit in well with us as we shared some game nights and dinners. They are both excellent conversationalists with wonderful senses of humor.
One of the highlights for us was when Vicky and Hermi prepared an authentic German meal of schnitzel and potato salad for us. They showed their creativity when the panko we had on hand was found to be rancid. They improvised by using other food items such as potato and tortilla chips to make the crust for the schnitzel. The meal was delicious!
Vicky and Hermi gave our cats, Bubbles, Ziggy, Fonzie, and new kitten, Beans, lots of love. The cats often followed them around the land and visited them in the apartment. We stayed with Tim & Dottie close to 8-weeks in the summer and boy was it an adventure.

We were truly blown away with how great our place was, with our own bedroom, bathroom, and living quarters that was equipped with a fridge and stove top to make meals. The land and animals (chickens, fish, and cats) were all so lovely, and their home was in a perfect location.
We spent our work days removing lava rock, weeding, painting, planting, building a raised garden bed, caring for the chickens and fish, trimming surrounding trees and plants, weed wacking/mowing, setting up a pool, cleaning certain areas of the home, moving mulch from next door-> to their property to be spread around various plants, and our final project was painting a mural on the kitchen door (which was an absolute blast to do so!). During our time off we did not waste a second to explore the island! We had plenty of time to go to nearby towns, go to the beach to snorkel/swim, go on hikes, check out farmers markets, check out Volcano Nat'l park, hangout by the cliffs for sunset, eat amazing food, check out shops, make day trips to the other side of the island. The only "issue" that we ran into was with the car we used, the convertible roof didn't work, and the driver side door was truly falling off, giving us a hard time with getting in and out of the car! This experience with the car truly gave us a laugh though and wasn't a problem at all- it still got us from point A to B and now we have hilarious memories that come from it.

Our time there seemed to fly
… read more by as we did our chores and enjoyed the spaces across their property. The property looks and feels "Hawaii" and it was pure joy to be around the trees and plantings, the beautiful birds, their wonderful pets and their friends.
Our work projects were not complicated or difficult and they varied so much from one to the other - we were never bored or overly challenged. The arrangement of work for the place to stay and having the use of their car was more than fair and equitable and beyond that, Tim and Dottie were the most gracious and caring hosts we could have hoped for. A day didn't pass without feeling like if there was anything we could need, they would be right there for us, so attentive and proactive they both are. And the welcomes we received to join them in family gatherings with friends was so warm and fun and appreciated - it was more than we actually get at home in Idaho! (Most of our friends here are bears, wolves and moose - nowhere near as cordial or inviting...)
Much in evidence were the improvements they have made over the years, on their own and with previous workawayers. They will say how much they want to do yet; we will marvel at how beautiful the results are so far all across the property. We were only blocks from the eastern shoreline of the coastal cliffs which are a natural marvel to behold, which we did often. The locals we met in the community were extremely friendly toward us and we had many opportunities to meet with and listen to locals and native Hawaiian folks all across the Island during our stay. We had use of a reliable car which was fantastic and allowed us the freedom to explore while we were there. On our days off we did just that and visited all over the island including Volcano National Park which is a short drive away. The Thurston Lava Tube was spectacular!
Our dream to spend time on Big Island while working came true for us and we feel so grateful to Tim and Dottie for helping us make that come true. They each have nurturing personalities and mentoring folks seems to be right in their wheelhouse - especially when it comes to details of indigenous horticulture and organics. We (a couple) stayed with Dottie and Tim for 3 months in their wonderful and warm home in Hawaii. Overall, it was such an amazing experience. Throughout our stay, that feeling of being cared for always remained. The work, ranging from simple gardening to creative projects and making raised garden beds out of volcanic rocks and cement, could be physically demanding at times but our well-being was always a priority. They always encouraged us to take breaks if we needed them and reminded us to not go over our limits or work more hours than necessary. This made us so motivated to get up early for work and give it our best every day. They encouraged us to take initiative, asking us for our input on how to do certain projects, allowing us to tackle it our own way, and trusting us to do our best and finish the jobs as well as we could. This is, in our opinion, the best way to get motivated as we felt that our ideas and input were always valued.
Besides the work, we greatly enjoyed their company during one of the many game nights, or while sharing a cup of coffee just to catch up. They introduced us to some of their wonderful friends, with whom we also had many great times and conversations. We were there during the holidays and celebrated Thanksgiving together with them, some of their friends, and one of their sons and his family. For Christmas, we even went with them to their sons' house on Kauai (another island of Hawaii) to celebrate together. We truly felt like a part of the family and we're already looking forward to seeing everyone again (sometime soon!!).
Even if it was our first workaway experience, we feel like Dottie and Tim are the best hosts you could hope for. Dottie and Tim, so much to say, not enough words to say it.

The truth is, not many people in this world are generous and courteous enough to offer and provide such an opportunity to people they just met.
Day one, Tim drove us around town showing us where the best markets and the cheapest gas hid behind every corner. Taking us to the best beaches for snorkeling and providing us with everything we needed for a beach day.
Dottie walked the land and teaching us about all of the plants and the variety of their nature. Pointing out the weeds from the plants (watch out for the sleeping grass) and showing us when something will be ready for harvest.
We were privileged enough to find our new favorite fruit; the mango, which was in season and dropping like flies for the majority of our stay. Accompanied by the best pineapple we have ever had and the new taste of lilikoi.
Dottie and Tim provided amazing hospitality and are extremely welcoming! Between shared dinners, game nights and lots of talking story, we immediately felt like family. They provided an incredible environment, working aside us and giving us the richest experience of the Big Island! The couple has a heartfelt story and path we felt so grateful to be a part of. Work days were kept enjoyable and lively with options of jobs to be done and occasional lizard encounters. We cannot express how thankful we are for the generous experience Dottie and Tim provided for us. We felt at home and will always cherish our time spent with the amazing couple!
As previously mentioned, we could talk about how caring Dottie and Tim are for ages. They have lived lives worth telling and are always going above and beyond. At the end of the day their goal was to meet new people and provide an experience. For example, Andrew turned 21 in Hawaii. Andrew and Brooke are super Workawayers. They are each exceptional workers, mature and confident individuals always willing to tackle whatever we asked. Both of them are talented and innovative. They offered several ideas for improvement at our house and grounds which we adopted.

During that time, they also took initiative to complete some tasks and went beyond expectation by framing and building exterior storage space with shelves and organizing items on the new shelves. Andrew and Brooke fit in well with us and our friends on several social occasions. We really enjoyed having them join us on "Game Night."
We highly recommend this dynamic couple together or individually!

Leah is a delightful young woman! We enjoyed our time with her A LOT! She is smart, talented, polite, has a wonderful sense of humor and is so pleasant to be around. She showed integrity and was so easy to trust.

She is a great communicator – when she was unsure of something, she would ask questions. She gave us the courtesy of letting us know her whereabouts and plans when she was off on the island during her time off, which helped put our minds at ease. When we had a meal together, she always offered to help clean up. She also makes a very tasty Shepherd’s Pie!
Leah joined us for “game night” with our friends and she fit right in. She was so kind to Bubbles and Ziggy (our two cats.) They often followed her around the land and visited her in the apartment. Speaking of the apartment, Leah left it very clean and in good order, which helped us a lot!
We wholeheartedly recommend Leah for any Workaway position and any other endeavors.

Well today makes a week I've been home and I'm still feeling every bit of love that was given to me by Aunty Dottie, Uncle Tim and Cousin Chris.. yep before my arrival I already had in mind that they would be family and that is EXACTLY what they are to me now. We enjoyed getting to know Kim. She is a multi-talented woman who seems to be able to juggle many things. She performed the tasks we asked her to do while keeping up with her own online businesses. When we had to go to the mainland for a memorial and more extended stay there, he took care of our home and animals. (our youngest cat ( 5 months old ) slept with Eddie every night. He drove the 2 hours to the other side of the island to pick me (Dottie) up from the airport and helped carry a lot of luggage.
