Hello! My name is Marta and I´m 38 years old. Im from Galicia, the northwest of Spain.

Two years ago, I felt the need to change my life completely. I quit my job as a graphic designer and joined Workaway in order to start a new way of life. I decided to travel to Ireland to improve my English. I was very lucky with my six different hosts during the five months I was there.

The work in Ireland was very diverse, ranging from cleaning and managing check-ins at different B&Bs to land management and gardening. This experience helped me strengthen my ability to adapt to all kinds of work and develop my interpersonal skills.

After my first experience in Ireland, I decided to take one step further and pursue my dream of becoming an illustrator. This led me to go to Lisbon to take a course in Scientific Illustration. Lisbon was another great adventure volunteering in two different hostels.

In the near future, I would like to start sailing my illustrations. While I work towards that, I want to spend my life traveling and enhancing my experiences by meeting people and discovering new places and cultures. I know that it could be difficult, but I am going to put all my energy into achieving my goal.

In Ireland, I discovered that I like and enjoy hospitality. Nowadays, for me, life is about sharing, enjoying, laughing, loving, family, friends and, of course, nature. I don't need anything special, just to be in contact with nature and to be surrounded by good vibes. I meditate habitually, and I love walking to enjoy nature and connect with it. I would like to meet people with similar thoughts.

I believe that I'm an easy-going person. I'm a team player, and I like to swap knowledge with others. My quiet, methodical, analytical, and empathic character allows me to comfortably handle great workloads, stressful situations, and team-leading positions. My studies in graphic design and scientific illustration have shaped me into a creative, detail-oriented, and organized person.

Before this change in my life, I worked as a graphic designer, event organizer, shop assistant, and my last job was in a print shop, where I managed different machines, from printing to digital cutting and more. I enjoy drawing and doing arts and crafts. I have painted my own house, assisted with some carpentry jobs, and restored some furniture.

—> The new experience this summer has been working as a waitress in a bar/restaurant on a very small island in one of the Atlantic islands in Ireland. I discovered that I also enjoy doing this job and I good at it. I got new skills!

I’m still taking English classes, now I have an intermediate level. I’m better at listening than speaking. Anyway, I have never had any problems communicating when I was abroad.

Quais são suas habilidades?

I'm a creative person. I love all related with art. I love everything that has to do with art/creativity. I like to do arts and crafts. I'm skillful with jobs that require manual labor.
I took a course on Scientific Illustration. Hand-drawn

I have experience assisting in many diferentes jobs, for instance painting, sanding furniture, reforming a bathroom and even restoring a boat. I did some plans for stands, furniture and others objects. I´m always eager to learn something new.

I practiced yoga years ago and I liked it but now I don't practice it too often. I discovered Tai Chi in Ireland and I would like to learn more.

I love hiking.

I live alone so I´m good at house keeping. I could cook you a “Spanish Omelette”.

Martha arrived to Inishturk for a week and stayed a month. We were so upset and lonely when she had to leave. Martha is an amazing person, very respectful, responsible, trustworthy and of course very kindhearted and … read more pleasant. She immersed herself into island life and enjoyed meeting the local island inhabitants and visitors and enjoyed the chats and Irish music in the Community Club.
Martha was a great help us iand no task was too much. She was diligent and consistent in the house always cleaning, ironing preparing lovely meals and making favourite recipes from her home country which we enjoyed very much. Martha is an easy person to be around very open and easy to talk to. Her quiet nature and beautiful voice I just really enjoyed and admired. There was occasions that I had to travel to the mainland for a few days but I felt comfortable in leaving Martha in charge of the house and farm as she is a most wonderful, competent person.
We have two dogs Daisy who is a working sheep dog and Luna who is a small house dog that demands a lot of attention. Daisy is rather afraid and nervous around people but Martha brought out the best in her and trained her to be more confident and friendly. Everyday Martha brought the dogs for long walks exploring the island. Also loved playing with them on the beach. Daisy become more friendly each day. Martha is certainly a dog whisperer. We also have a cat called Bailey who thinks she's a dog and she became part of the walking group every day. So Martha the dogs and cat explored the island on a daily basis. She is truly an animal lover and enjoyed helping with the baby lambs and sheep
Martha spend many hours with us in the Poly Tunnel weeding and caring for the vegetables also enjoyed working in the flower garden. She helped us enormously and we can never forget her. She was competent both inside and outside the house.
Martha is an artistic person and did beautiful illustrations and drawings of Daisy which we treasure.
We would like to recommend Martha in the highest regard to any further host. You will have an outright brilliant person on your hands with knowledge, experience and interest in helping you as she can turn her hand to any job. Martha we thank you so much for coming to our little island and helping us. We wish you well in the future and look forward to your returning to us as you are so welcome anytime.

Be with Phylomena and Bernard was amazing, I felt as at home. I arrived to Inishturk to stay only for a week but finally I stayed there for more than a month. I felt really lucky, because for me the island and it inhabitants are very special. All people was very kind with me. There is an special atmosphere full of peace and joy.

I was only a little over a week with Majella and her family. Most of the time I was alone with Iueri her oldest son because the rest of the family was traveling. Iueri was very kind with me. Almost all the work was cleaning at home. Go for a walk with her dog. All easy and relax.
