Descrição
We are Renske and Arnoud, originally from the Netherlands, we moved to France in May '22. We bought a 300 yo farm, that has been uninhabited for 60 years. In 2023 we opened a retreat, where we celebrate the 8 festivals of the wheel of the year, in the druid tradition. For 12 years we dreamt about living off the land, and finally took the big step! We are happy, we eat from the land, we spend a lot of time outdoors, life just feels lighter out here! Come and join us in this lovely experience, teach us about your culture and traditions and let us tell you about our pagan ways!

O que é isso?
Oportunidades de intercâmbio cultural e aprendizado
A beautiful, rural place to learn French or Dutch, but also we are beekeepers so we can teach you about that. Also, on a more personal level: I can teach you about druids, runes, meditation and labyrinth work. We celebrate the 8 festivals of the year wheel, we love nature and respect the spirits around us, like the mountains, trees, plants, water, etc. I am also a student of the druidic path.
Ajuda
We are renovating a 300 year old farm and creating a garden/vegetable garden of 5000 m2. Any help is welcome, like working in the garden, doing groceries, cleaning up, cooking, walking the dogs, helping in and around the house.

We are fluent in English and Dutch, learning French. Any help with French is welcome, we can teach you Dutch or English in return!
Acomodação
It's an old farmhouse, and we are in the proces of renovating so please don't expect any luxury! You have a bedroom, tents or you can sleep in our old campervan in the garden. Depending on how many workawayers we have, we can fit you where you like!
Meals: if you can cook that would be appreciated! We love to share meals together with all the whole weird little workaway family.

We can pick you up from the nearest bus or train station. We live in North East France, where there are lots of places to hike, gallo roman sights, old villages, etc. We are in the Champagne region, just above Burgundy. We eat veggies from our own garden, we have honey from our own bees.
We also have 2 dogs, who roam freely, they're very friendly and playful. Your dog is also welcome, provided it's ok around other dog, cows, cats (the neighbours), sheep etc.
We love playing board games!

Renske and Arnoud both are lovely, kind hosts, with whom I’m sure someone would enjoy spending time with. They took interest in latvian culture, like our latvian song and dance festival which happens every four years and wikipedia says it’s actually a part of UNESCO list since 2008. Also I told them about our Jāņi and Līgo summer solstice… read more festival. They really enjoy the traditional ways of celebrating festivals in a year.
I helped them with their greenhouse, helping around their home and Arnoud teached me how to measure drywall pieces and screw them to metal profiles. My dad says he will now know someone to ask for help, when he is going to make another house :)
Work time was respected, I worked from 9 in the morning or sometimes I started at 10 and I worked for 5 hours till 14:00 or 15:00 depending when I woke up in the morning. I had breakfast, lunch and diner with them everyday.
I also met their two big dogs, one named Sushe and other named Hais, both are girls and hosts were making jokes that these are actually boy names, which I found funny. Both dogs are really excited when someone enters or leaves the house, they love to have walks, so if you enjoy walking with dogs, then this is for you.
They introduced me to their friends and it was lovely to talk with them.
I enjoyed to play with both of them board games and to watch movies, I enjoyed watching Avatar 2 and this cool movie, which I don’t know the name for.
The room I was sleeping in had 3 beds, which I took one of them to sleep in and I had a toilet and shower just for me. The room was recently renovated during last Workawayer stay, so I really enjoyed my stay in the rooms.
Food at their house is delicious, I enjoyed every one of them and I cooked brownies for them, which they loved.
As for my friendship with them, I understood that this won’t work out for me. I was the only Workawayer with them at my stay and the next Workawayer would have come after a week since I left. I was not able to develop healthy daily conversations between us, as I am quite shy and it takes me more time to start conversations. There was sometimes silent moments between us, where we didn’t feel comfortable. Then it rolled down into a big snowball of misunderstandings between each other and everything ended up with them saying to me that this won’t work for us. I believe if there was another Workawayer between us, then it would have helped me to open up more to conversations. For me it just takes longer time, as I carefully listen in conversations and I chime in them, if I have questions or I want to add something of my own.
Their home where I lived it felt pretty isolated, as to get to Langres it took 30 or so minutes to get with the car from their village. Walking to Langres seems would take a few hours. I must say that their place is really quiet and sleeping was very easy, the air in their area is fresh, lots of greenery around. They have a big terrace and it was lovely to sit down with a cup of tea and enjoying the sun. I did have a nice walk to the nearby village Belmont, which is fast to get by a car, but walking to there is 40 or more minutes. At Belmont I climbed up to this viewpoint, where I could see the beautiful greenery. I even got to get a sunburn the day before I left. As for me and now I understood about myself is that I want to have easy access to public transport or to be a walking distance away from nice things like beaches or more sightseeings, cities, etc.
I must say thanks for them for accepting me, as I now understand that I want to have more people around me and being immersed in lots of different cultures. I also must say warm thanks that they helped me to move to my next hosts. I had problems with payments with my card in easter holidays, like my Blablacar and train payments got canceled, and they were willing to help me pay for the train tickets. In the end my mum stepped in and helped me to buy the train tickets and I asked Renske if it’s possible that she can give me cash in hand and I would count the money to her Paypal. She helped me with the cash and took me to the train station with her car, and helped me to understand if trains are going the day I left, as there are people protesting in France and it can happen that trains are not going. We had a very nice goodbye hug and I wished them the best with finishing their wonderful home and to have great time in life. Thank you Renske and Arnoud for this experience!
