Also working as a group of workaways was very fun, there was always a team of people to work with and rely on (and ofc it was a pleasure to make friends while working).
Linda and Der are fantastics chefs, the food they made us was delicious, just as everything else in the kitchen.

This experience was amazing! It was the best decision to come here for the first workaway. Linda and Der and the whole family is super nice, I felt like home in a very short time because of them and the people who live there. Everyone is so welcoming and you feel like you are part of a big family there with the cutest dogs ever☺️.

… read more hard and you have a lot of free time when you can do whatever you want (go for a walk and enjoy the incredible landscape, ride a bike, have a pint with awesome people🍺). Crookhaven is a gorgeous place, the beaches, the cliffs, the ocean.. I took pictures non-stop.
The food is so good, they cook very well and the soups in the kitchen are delicious.
I spent there 1 month, but I would have stay longer if I could.
If you are thinking about going to Crookhaven I will help you.. Let's go! You won't regret it!

We stayed in Crookhaven 1 month, and it was a magnificent experience. We felt like home the minute we arrive there. They are lovely, and they always made sure we were ok and had everything we needed and even more.
Linda usually send the tasks first time in the morning so we can organise the work, which was from 10 to 14. The tasks were easy,
… read more painting, cleaning, organising. The rest of the day was free and we were able to use the kayaks,and bikes. Crookhaven is a breathtaking place, beautiful beaches, cliff. Also you can go to The maizen head, and a caste using the bikes.

Johannes and I spent four wonderful weeks in Crookhaven. We lived in a beautiful apartment with the other lovely workawayers. All of us worked together from 10 to 2 mainly in the garden. Luckily we could experience Saint Patricks Day in Ireland and it was definitly a day to remember. They organised a small parade through the village and afterwards we spent our day at the bar. The evening endend with some late night swimming ;)

It’s a really beautiful tiny village; the nature, the stunning view, the ocean - the pictures one this website don’t capture its beauty.
Regarding the work you have to do: it’s only 4 hours a day, 5 days a week and it’s rich in variety. Sometimes gardening, cleaning painting… most of the time pretty easy work.

We stayed in Crookhaven for just two weeks, but it was quite a worthy time spent here! 🌿 Der and Linda have always a smile on their face and they welcomed us like in a family, introducing us to the rest of the staff/people around the little sea town. Linda and Der run the shop, the restaurant and two pubs on the peninsula so there are a lot of tourists sometimes coming in and out, it could be chaotic, but we never felt alone. The surroundings are majestic and we could take Der's car to go anywhere! Crazy! There's a lot of respect and understanding in the house and we missed nothing. We recommend this experience for who wants to feel in paradise! The only bad thing? We've spent two unbelievable weeks with Linda and Der in Crookhaven in January. That was our first workaway experience and one of our first overseas adventures. They had made a lovely atmosphere in the bar and between workaways. The work is quite funny but above all, we are really well fed.

I want to thank Mark again for the welcoming in his flat where we were used to drinking and laughing with the other workaways. Thanks to him, we've truly met all the team. We have especially met really good Spanish friends with whom we already have some other appointments.
We have also improved our English, in fact, that was our first goal. Each time that we had a question, they were there to answer and teach us.
Crookhaven is also wonderful. we recommande to go kayaking in the afternoon. All the stuff you need for the kayak is available in the shed.

Our names are Nick and Maaike and we stayed with Linda and Der from November 2020 until March 2021. The experience was unlike anything we have experienced before - and we have travelled a fair bit. Crookhaven genuinely steals your heart; for so many reasons.
First off, the incredible landscape of the Mizen Peninsula you will never get bored of.
… read more Barleycove, Galley Cove, Cockle Strand, Rocky Beach, Toor pier, Browhead and Three Castle Head and so many more places to explore in the area. Photos really don't do these places justice. We were lucky to get invited on many boat trips with Der, Don & Dee around the coast - where we spotted a big group of dolphins - absolutely magical.
Then there is the family and the community in Crookhaven. These people are the most welcoming bunch you will ever meet. We had been in Crookhaven for less than a month before we were invited to Christmas dinner with the family and Christmas drinks at various families around the village. In a short amount of time we were integrated into the community; having our daily morning coffees and afternoon beer by the fire outside with Dee, Don and Dec, going exploring with friends through gorse bushes, swimming and waterskiing in the harbour with Katie and Alex - just to name a few of the many social activities.
The work itself is really good, and lots of fun. We learnt a lot about painting, wallpapering and carpentry. We renovated two bedrooms, a hallway and staircase in their house above the pub and it turned out fabulous. Linda is a natural born leader and is excellent in managing her projects. She also gives you lots of freedom and trust to get work done. Linda and Der treat their workers with so much respect and love, they really go the extra mile for them, which motivated us to deliver great work.
Thank you to everyone who made our stay so very special, but in particular Dermot, Linda, Billy, Katie, Mark, Alex and Angela. You all are our Irish family and we will be returning. If anyone is reading this who is thinking about coming to West Cork - LOOK NO FURTHER! This one is a gem.

The accommodation was very good, over the pub but there is not a lot of noise so it's not a problem! For the work, we help cleaning the kitchen for 4 hours maximum per day, so you have a lot of time for you.

… read more own volition go beyond the daily expectation of 4-5 hours and as a result they were more than accommodating when I would ask for time off. In fact after being there several weeks I was repeatedly encouraged to take more time off. On several occasions when they were busy in the pub I would roll up my sleeves and do dishes for 3-4 hours which was satisfying. Other tasks performed were bottle sorting, kitchen towel laundry, and picking up litter. It was easy to find things to do like the three previous examples without being asked. For the painting I did, if I needed supplies they would get them quickly. Same for bike parts when I was repairing bikes. (I got a bit of a reputation as the village bicycle repairman https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U01xasUtlvw) The food was superb and you will not go hungry. Being there for nearly 3 months, I was able to get to know the other family members, the locals, other workawayers, and the numerous dogs which was a real plus. Hikes in the area, including Streek Head, Brow Head, Three Castle Head, and the big hill over on the coast road, are fantastic. The natural beauty of the area is stunning, the pictures on workaway do only partial justice to what you’ll see. The second day that we arrived, Linda showed us all the things that she would like to acomplish during our stay, all the instructions were clear and when we had any doubt we just call her.
The accommodation was good, a room upstairs the Pub, so whenever you want to drink a beer or hang out you just have to go downstairs. Even though the room and the Pub are in the same building, I never had problems to sleep. About the food, we prepared our own food at the Pub's kitchen, where there are plenty of ingredientes to use, especially delicious seafood. You really have to try the crab sandwich! Also Der is a very good cook, he was so kind to cook for dinner for us several times and it was always quite tasty.
There are many things to do around, the area is great to do hiking, kayaking and biking. The landscape around is just beautiful, with cliffs, beaches and ruins of old buildings. Also, go to fish with Der's father is a unique experience.

… read more do some work outside when the weather permitted. Outside work was outlined in detail by Linda so we always knew what needed to be done. We also worked in the house as well as helped down at the pub where we helped prep food, washed up, and helped Rose do whatever projects she needed done for the day. The accommodations were nice, we had a decent size room with a spectacular view of the bay. The people we met were the real stars here though. Der is incredibly kind, all the staff were great fun and we truly made friends for life with the people here and can't wait to come back. If you get the chance to live in Crookhaven and experience the hospitality of Dermont and his family you are lucky. This Workaway experience was my first one, but more than I could have hoped for or imagined. I was only supposed to stay for a week, but had such a good time I ended up staying for more than twice that. From the get-go Linda, Billy,
… read more Dermont, and his daughters welcomed me into their home and community with open arms. They invited me to family dinners, on their boat to go fishing, Christmas tree shopping, and more; it just depends what time of year get down there and what is going on at the time. Crookhaven is a very small village with a population of ~50 during the offseason, but that is perfect for where it is situated. This gives you plenty of opportunity to explore the area, but also because of the small population, the whole village is incredibly inviting and you immediately feel like a part of the community. You quickly feel the Irish culture and what Irish hospitality is all about.
If you want to know about the work, they ask for 20-25 hours a week, which is more than fair for everything Dermont and company provide. They provide plenty of food and the housing is more than adequate. What you’ll be doing depends upon what they are working on at the time as they have many different projects they are working on. While I was there I helped to renovate an apartment which happened to be a great learning experience. Dermont is very understanding that if it is a nice day out, go take advantage of it and the work can be done later in the day. There are bikes and kayaks for you to use and they give you plenty of independence and opportunities to use them. I could keep going, but hopefully this summary is good enough to convince you that you will have a great time if the chance arises. And if help is not needed while you're in Ireland, don't worry about it. Go down to Crookhaven anyways and see the beauty that the Southwest of Ireland has to offer!

Where does one start with describing such an amazing experience. Linda, Dermot, and Dermot's daughters Katie and Alex are some of the greatest people you could meet. The help required was very fair and the accommodations were above par. The village of Crookhaven seemed to me like one big family and you are made, almost immediately, to feel apart of their lives and their family. You will find it very difficult to leave without new lifelong friendships and a desire to start planning your next trip back.
I never did get sick of the landscape around me. The culture and beauty of Ireland can be seen within a short walk or bike ride around the village and surrounding areas. Be sure to check out Brow Head, the site of future Star Wars scenes. It's a short walk from the village and believe me, it'll take your breath away.
